How To Unlock iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 on iOS 5.0 or Up

April 23, 2012 — by Simon Ng25

This is a big news for iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 users. Earlier, a Chinese iPhone hacker Loktar_Sun has released a solution for unlocking a jailbroken iPhone using Sam Bingner’s SAM (Subscriber Artificial Module) package. This SAM unlock method should work with all baseband versions.

I’m not able to test the method on my iPhone 4S as it’s a factory-unlocked version. However, the method has been verified on U.S. carriers by the iPhone Dev team member musclenerd as well as another iPhone blogger.

Ultrasn0w Released to Unlock iOS 4.2 on iPhone 3G and 3GS

November 29, 2010 — by Simon Ng11

As scheduled, the iPhone Dev team announced an updated version of Ultrasn0w, a free carrier unlock solution for iPhone 3G and 3GS running iOS 4.2. The new version of Ultrasn0w supports the unlock of iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS owners with a baseband later than 05.13.04.

It turns out the unlock is bit trickier than before. According to the development team’s blog, the team has made use of a baseband exploit found on iPad firmware 3.2.2. What it’s interesting is the baseband of iPad (with version 06.15.00) is fully compatible with iPhone 3G and 3GS. So unlocker can upgrade the baseband of iPhone 3G/3GS to that of iPad and use Ultrasn0w for unlocking.

To support the baseband upgrade for unlocking, the brilliant team has released an updated version for PwnageTool (for Mac only) and Redsn0w (for both Windows and Mac). The special update of PwnageTool allows you to build a custom IPSW for iPhone 3G/3GS with iPad’s baseband. The redsn0w has also been updated to v0.9.6b5 to flash the iPad 06.15 baseband on iPhone3G or iPhone3GS.

Update about iOS 4.1 Unlock for iPhone 3GS and 3G

November 2, 2010 — by Simon Ng18

Since the release of iOS 4.1, I got tons of emails about how we can unlock iPhone 3GS/3G running on iOS 4.1. Presently there is no solution for that. The current version of ultrasn0w cannot support the unlock on iOS 4.1, which comes with a new baseband version (i.e. 05.14.02) for both iPhone 3G and 3GS.

If you have accidentally upgraded to iOS 4.1 and lose the unlock, here is a good news from the iPhone Dev team. As @musclenerd, a key member of the team, mentioned on Twitter that they’ve figured out the unlock solution:

@nadimnakade we have an unlock for that, but gotta wait til next cat&mouse from Apple (official 4.2)

Limera1n Released to Jailbreak iOS 4.1 for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4

October 11, 2010 — by Simon Ng19

What a surprise! As we were expecting the release of Greenpois0n on October 10, it turns out that GeoHot, the developer of blackra1n, amazed everyone with the debut of Limera1n.

As mentioned in its official website and iPhone Dev team’s blog, Limera1n is a bootrom-level jailbreak that works on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone4, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G, the iPad, and (technically) the AppleTV 2G. However, Limera1n does not rely on the SHAtter exploit. In fact, it uses a different bootrom-based exploit that allows the jailbreak on more devices.

What You Need to Know about Limera1n

For now, the Limera1n is a beta release. That means it’s not stable and with some known bugs. For those who are adventurous, I know you can’t wait for the final version. But before you download Limera1n and jailbreak your device, here are what you need to know about the jailbreak tool:

October 9, 2010 — by Simon Ng7

Finally we got the answer. We got tons of emails asking about when the jailbreak tool for iOS 4.1 will be available.

Joshua Hill, known as p0sixninja from the Chronic-Dev Team, has announced on Twitter that the Greenpois0n, the jailbreak tool for iOS 4.1, will be released on Oct 10:

Things have progressed to the point where we don’t expect anymore roadblocks. ETA for greenpois0n is 10/10/10 at 10:10:10AM

I guess sunday will be a funday after all 😛

iPhone Dev Team Shows Off iOS 4.1 Jailbreak on iPod touch 4G using PwnageTool Beta

September 28, 2010 — by Simon Ng4

iPod touch 4 pwnedAs we reported earlier, the SHAtter exploit discovered by an iPhone hacker @pod2g can be utilized for jailbreaking iPhone 4 and other iDevices running iOS 4.1. The iPhone Dev team has put the exploit in actual use and develop a beta version of PwnageTool to jailbreak an iPod touch (4th generation).

The team confirmed the exploit worked as expected and was enough to convince the iPod touch 4G to restore to the custom IPSW. They have put a demo video to show off the successful result (check out after the break).

But, how about iPhone 4? Will the SHAtter exploit let us jailbreak iPhone 4?

PDF Patch for Jailbroken iPhone to Fix PDF Vulnerability

August 14, 2010 — by Simon Ng3

On Wednesday, Apple released iOS 4.0.2 that comes with a security fix for PDF exploit. For those who need jailbreaking, as mentioned in previous post, it is advised not to upgrade to this version of iOS. Otherwise, you will lose jailbreaking once upgraded. However, that means your jailbroken iPhone is vulnerable to PDF attack.

Thanks to Jay Freeman, the creator of cydia. He has developed a PDF fix to patch the security hole. This fix is specially designed for jailbroken iPhone running any iPhone OS version (including 2.x, 3.x, 4.0 and 4.0.1).

With this patch, you have the best of both worlds. You can keep your iPhone jailbroken. At the same time, the phone is secured from malicious attack.

If you are using jailbroken iPhone, act now and install the PDF patch. To apply the patch, you can simply follow the procedures:

Ultrasn0w for iPhone Updated to Improve Battery Life

August 13, 2010 — by Simon Ng3

About a week ago, iPhone Dev team released ultrasn0w 1.0-1 to support the unlock of iPhone 4, as well as, older models of iPhone. Over 780,000 iPhones have been unlocked by the tool, making the phone possible to use with any carrier.

Some folks claimed they experienced a sudden decrease in your iPhone 4 battery life (even the phone is in standby mode) after using ultrasn0w.

The iPhone Dev team has looked into the issue and releases an update – Ultrasn0w 1.1-1. As mentioned on Twitter, the release is updated to fix the standby battery problem:

ultrasn0w upgraded to version 1.1-1 we’ve tweaked a few things that may help with standby battery life, you can upgrade via Cydia
