Here’s a good and not so good news for iOS 6 users.
There is a tethered jailbreak for iOS 6 released for the public. Fortunately, you can tinker with your iOS device with limited functionality. However, here’s the catch. The tethered version is only available for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch.
As you all know, tethered jailbreak has limited capabilities. Frankly, it’s a bit frustrating for some users to adapt this version because it requires a computer connection to reboot the jailbroken device. Basically, whenever your iOS device reboots or runs out of battery, you need to connect it (via USB) back to your desktop in order to aid the boot with the jailbreak application.
Unfortunately, the jailbreak tool for iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod Touch 5th gen, iPad 2 and the new iPad is not yet available as of this moment. Although jailbreak methods are considered legal, this will void your device’s warranty.
Here are the compatible devices:
- iPhone 4
- iPhone 3GS
- iPod Touch 4th Generation
We give credits to iPhone Dev-Team for making this method possible. Here’s an excerpt from CNET.
The iPhone Dev-Team — a group of hackers who target Apple products and who do not work for the company — is reporting today that its Redsn0w tethered jailbreak will work with Apple’s iOS 6. However, according to Redmond Pie, which was first to report on the news, only the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and fourth-generation iPod Touch will work with the jailbreak.
Are you ready?
Please note that this version of redsn0w is a developer version. Try it at your own risk. The jailbreak is tethered only. That means, you need to jailbreak your device again every time when it’s rebooted. Lastly, if you rely on software unlock or using Gevey sim, please stay away from the iOS 6 upgrade.
Note: Please make sure you create backup to all your files on iCloud storage (if you have) or using Mac or PC. The compatible devices are listed above. If you rely on unlock, do not update you iOS 6.
Step 1:
Download iOS 6 and update your device. We featured a tutorial on how to download and upgrade to iOS 6.
Step 2:
Download the Redsn0w 0.9.13 dev 4 for the operating system you are currently using. (Windows/Mac)
Step 3:
Extract the components on zip file and save it to a similar folder on your desktop.
Step 4:
Make sure you run your PC as an administrator if you are using Windows and launch the executable Redsnow file. If you are using Mac, launch Redsn0w by Ctrl-Click on the icon and select Open from the new menu.

Step 5:
Click the Extras option from the main menu of the application interface and point it to the applicable IPSW file.

Step 6:
Simply follow the instructions to complete the process. It might take a few minutes, but it is worth the wait. Redsnow might ask you to launch DFU mode. Do not unplug your device.
How to boot your tethered device:
As we have mentioned earlier, tethered jailbreak requires the aid of computer whenever you boot your device. To do this, simply launch the Redsnow software and click on the “Extras.” From there, click “Just Boot” option and follow the instructions on the screen. Once it is finished, you will be rebooted back into the tethered mode of your iOS device.
How to install Cydia on iOS 6:
Basically, the current Resdnow tool doesn’t install Cydia by default. Here’s how to install it manually.
The following steps to install Cydia is done using Terminal on Mac. You can use the same commands on Windows using a SSH program like WinSCP.
- Note down the IP address of your device.
- Make sure your device is connected to your PC or Mac. Start Terminal on Mac and type:
ssh root@<IP address of your device goes here>
- It will now prompt you to enter the root password. Type: alpine
- Once done, type:
wget -q -O /tmp/cyinstall.sh http://downloads.kr1sis.net/cyinstall.sh && chmod 755 /tmp/cyinstall.sh && /tmp/cyinstall.sh
If you cannot wait any longer, you can stick to tethered version for awhile (for A4 devices only). If you have any questions, hit the comment section below.
