Till this day, Fieldrunners is my favorite Tower defense game. While I was playing Fieldrunners, I had to sometimes recharge my phone for up to 5 times a day as I spent so much time on it. Therefore, when SubAtomic Studios launch Fieldrunners 2, I quickly jumped on the bandwagon to see what the new iteration of Fieldrunners had in stored for me.
After the first day of playing Fieldrunners 2 ? I am glad to say that the game has not lost its appeal. Fieldrunners 2 has snazzier graphics accompanied with a nice story line to follow.
The tutorial is quite comprehensive and will allow any novice to master the basics quite quickly. After the tutorial, a major change in the program is the use of a map for players to progress. Fielderunners 2 offers 25 levels, new Sudden Death, Hybrid, and Puzzle map types, 30 enemy types, 25 weapons, and new multi-storied environments.

The Basics Mechanics Remain
Despite the cosmetic changes – the basic mechanics of the game remains the same:
- Enemies take the shortest point to get from 1 point to their destination
- Players use available weapons to place them on a map to kill/block/steer their paths
The constrains are:
- Limitation of coins to buy the weapons
- A maximum of 20 enemies reaching their destination will mean a loss
Refreshing Changes
The team at SubAtomic studios did however include some changes, which brought a welcomed and refreshing change to an already familiar title. Firstly, the graphics are up a few notches from the Fieldrunners 1. Then instead of the uniform objective of each stage, Fieldrunners 2 mixes level types between survival scenarios, time trials and puzzles to add a nice twist to the plot. If that wasn’t enough ? the game rewards you with coins that can be used to purchase extra items such as:
Rewind ? Lets you roll back 3 rounds
Deep Freeze ? Stops a group of enemies in their tracks
Smart Mine ? Heavy Damage

I want to applaud the guys at SubAtomic for making players earn their coins instead of allowing players to easily buy it as an in-app purchase. I searched for an in-app purchase feature and surprisingly couldn’t find one.

Summary
What I LOVE about tower defense games is that it’s a challenge to allocate resources to reach and objective. Fieldrunners 2 ? has all that ? plus great graphics, soundtrack, and a storyline. I think that this will occupy a few considerable hours and well worth its $3 price tag
Fieldrunners 2 is available for the iPhone ($2.99)
