There were rumors floating around that Microsoft would be unveiling its new tablet at the media event which last night. It looks like they were on target. A new tablet is has been released and it?s named as Microsoft Surface.
The new tablet has a 10.6 inch display, magnesium casing, and has weight of only 1.5 pounds. This means it looks to add more than just providing competition to the hottest tablet currently on the market ? Apple?s new iPad. It has been described as ?tablet that?s a great PC, and a PC that?s a great tablet. Other features include a built-in kickstand, 9.33 mm profile and a USB 2.0 port. The tablet will be available for purchase in two versions. The simple version is built on the ARM architecture running Windows RT tablet software while the Pro version runs a full version of Windows 8 and users Intel CPUs.
The Pro version brings a higher-res display and added power. However, there is an opportunity cost compared to the simple version. It?s thicker, just over 13 mm, more heavier and has onboard fans.
Right now, there?s no ETA given for a release date. There?s no word on pricing as well. The only thing Microsoft revealed was the capacity of the simple Windows RT version, which will be available in 32 GB and 64 GB versions, and the Pro version will be launched with higher capacities.
I applaud Microsoft for being bold enough to introduce a tablet. I would look forward to how it does against the iPad, and other less-popular tablets out there. It?s interesting that Microsoft have stepped into the hardware arena. The most interesting thing they introduce is an accessory for the tablet, a multi-touch keyboard with a built-in trackpad.
