Even though Apple’s App Store crossed 25 billion downloads earlier this week, I still believe that finding the app you want is not as simple as it sounds. In fact, Apple realizes that too and it recently acquired another app discovery startup Chomp last month to make searching apps easier on the App Store. Till that happens, you can either curse Apple or look for an alternate app which lets you find the app you want. And that’s precisely what the Crosswa.lk iPhone app offers!
Crosswa.lk app gives a whole new social twist to the app discovery paradigm and it shows you the apps your friends have that you don’t. The app lets you find and follow your friends, including those from Gmail and Facebook, and then it shows you which apps they have which you are missing. Alternatively, you can view the top Trending apps worldwide or the apps which are trending among your friends as shown below.
You can then view an app’s details by selecting it from the list.
At a high level, the Crosswa.lk app is organized into the following sections – Your Profile, Trending Apps, Recommendations, Communities, Apps on Sale and Users.
You can follow others and see which apps they’ve liked and rated.
As with most other social discovery apps, recommendations are the heart of Crosswa.lk. The app lets you ?like? apps, give them stars, write reviews, share the app to Facebook or Twitter, and see how many of your friends have the app installed, too.
While the Crosswa.lk service was launched last November, the iPhone app was released only earlier this week. Having used the web version for a while, I can safely bet that the iPhone app is one step better. None the less, I did see the app crash frequently on my iPhone 4 device and it would be nice if the Crosswa.lk developers fix it ASAP.
None the less, for someone who dislikes iTunes app discoverability, Crosswa.lk offers a much needed breathe of fresh air. If you like discovering new apps like I do ? you should definitely check this one out, it’s free!
