Emoji icons are picture characters that are very popular in Japan for text messaging. Before the release of iOS 5, the Emoji characters are only available for iPhone users in Japan. For users in other countries, you need to use a third-party app to tweak the iOS settings before you can use it.
In iOS 5, Apple brings the Emoji icons to all iPhone users. Now you can simply go to Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> International Keyboards -> Add New Keyboard. Tap on “Emoji” to enable it.
You can then launch any iPhone app (say, Notes) to try out the feature. To switch between different keyboards, you can tap on the “globe” button.
Please note that the Emoji icons can only be recognized by iPhone. In other words, if you send text messages with Emoji icons to your friends using Blackberry, they can’t view the icons.
