The Dev-Team has already released an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1 on your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad1 and AppleTV too. We have already shared a tutorial to jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 using Redsn0w on Windows or Mac.

This guide, will show you how to jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 using PwnageTool 4.3. This will only work on Macs. Windows users must use Redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze. Here’s why you should use PwnageTool:

  • If you use Ultrasn0w to unlock your iPhone 4, it is important that you do not upgrade your baseband while updating the iOS firmware version to 4.3.1. PwnageTool creates a custom IPSW which will preserve your baseband at 1.59.00 during update.
  • If you want to jailbreak Apple TV 2G, then this is the only tool that you can use.

Find the complete walkthrough with screenshots after the break.

Preparing for iOS 4.3.1 Jailbreak:

Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer. You will be restoring your iPhone or other iOS device with a custom IPSW and erase all current data on the iPhone so it’s essential that you backup all your information first.

Download PwnageTool 4.3 and the official iOS 4.3.1 Firmware for your iOS device using the following links.

Click on Expert Mode at the top and select your iOS device. Then click on the blue arrow to proceed.

The next screen will ask you to “Browse for IPSW” Click on it and select the iOS 4.3.1 IPSW file for your device.

On the next screen, Select general and then click the blue icon to proceed. You do not need to change anything here.

Select “Activate the phone” only if you are not using a SIM card from an official provider. If you are on an official cellular provider selecting this will prevent you from activating and making calls from your iPhone 4.

Hit the back button and now click on Build and then on the arrow to create the custom .IPSW file.

Select the location where you want to save the file and click on Save.

After a minute, you will be prompted to enter your computer’s password. Once you have done it, your custom IPSW should be ready in less than fifteen minutes.

PwnageTool will now instruct you to put your iOS device into the DFU mode so that it can be restored in iTunes. Follow the instructions given on the screen.

If you were successful, PwnageTool will show you the following message. If not, no need to worry. Patiently repeat the steps above.

Please note that in DFU mode your iPhone is connected and ON but the screen will remain blank. Quit PwnageTool and launch iTunes. It should automatically detect the iPhone.

Now press Alt/Option key on your Mac’s keyboard and then click on Restore. Now browse for the custom IPSW file just created.

Warning: Make sure you do not accidentally select the stock firmware from Apple. Doing this, might irreversibly upgrade your iPhone’s firmware.

That’s it. Your part is already done. iTunes will do the needful now. Once successfully restored, your iPhone will restart and you should be able to see Cydia on your homescreen.

Since, the iPhone has been restored with factory settings, you will have to sync your data back using iTunes.

You cannot unlock iPhone 4 on iOS 4.3.1 yet, as Ultrasn0w update has not been released yet but it is on its way and we’ll keep you updated about it.

Ok, I feel so stupid. I cannot figure this out!! I tried to jailbreak the iphone 4 last night and then the ipad tonight…..both times I thought it was correct, until the very end it says to “restore”…..and it’s deleted everything as if it’s a brand new device– no cydia.

    Any ideas?

Well, still no luck. Tried the iphone 3gs again after the ipod. No luck. The keep going directly back to factory settings, then I have to restore from back up just to get back to even money. I just don’t know.

There is a guy down the street offereing $10 for each device. I’ll see him in the morning. 🙁
