How often do you come across a favorite video on YouTube and want to save it locally? On PC or Mac, there are a handful of online tools that lets you download YouTube videos. A friend of mine asked,
“What about iPad? How can we save YouTube videos onto iPad and play it offline?”
There is a cydia app for that! If you’re using jailbroken iPad, there is a popular cydia hack called “YourTube HD” that tweaks the YouTube app on iPad to let you download videos directly.
YourTube HD is available on cydia for US$2.0. Once you purchase and install the app, you’ll find a new “Download” button appeared when viewing a video. You can simply tap on the button to download and save the video onto iPad. YourTube HD offers options for user to choose the quality of videos (including low quality, high quality and HD) to download.

To play back the video locally, just tap on the “Download” section and select any of the videos in the folder to view it offline. YourTube even lets you add the video into iPod library. Simply tap on the blue arrow button of the video and you are prompted with option to add it into the iPod library.

YourTube works only on jailbroken iPad. If you want to use it, you can follow this jailbreak guide to jailbreak your iPad.
The saved videos are in the format of mp4 and they are located at /var/mobile/Media/YourTube. To transfer the video back to computer, you can use iPhone Explorer and copy the video file back to your PC or Mac.
YourTube does not just work on iPad. It also comes with a version for iPhone users. If you also want to download YouTube video onto your iPhone, go ahead to download it via cydia. To learn more about the iPhone version, you can check out our previous review.
