A year ago, Skype released its first iPhone app and brings free VOIP calls to iPhone. The catch is it only works over WiFi network. Unless you have a jailbroken iPhone and apply the VoIPover3G hack, you have no way to make voice call using Skype over 3G network.
On Saturday, the company finally rolled out Skype 2.0 and brings the 3G support to the iPhone app. Now, as long as you have the 3G signal, you can make a Skype call to another Skype user without charge. However, the free service for 3G will end by the end of August this year. After that, the company will charge a small monthly fee, in addition to the operator charges for data.
Other than this crucial feature update, the Skype 2.0 also bundles with other offerings:
- Near CD-quality sound for Skype-to-Skype calls using wideband audio (SILK codec) on iPhone 3GS and 2nd generation iPod touch
- Enhanced call quality indicator
- Faster start-up time
- Quick access to the dial pad from iPhone home screen

My early impression of VOIP call over 3G is pretty good. I do not care how much Skype will charge after the free trial period. At least, you can enjoy the free calls until August. So, go ahead to download app and be an early bird to enjoy the free service. Skype for iPhone is a free application and now available in App Store. You can simply click this direct iTunes link to download it.
Update: Skype has mentioned in its blog that the free skype-to-skype call over 3G will be available until the end of 2010.

I read a post that it did not work on Jailbroken phones. Has anyone tried it with a JB phone with Backgrounder and confirmed it works?
