Spirit: Untethered Jailbreak for iPhone 3GS, iPad and iPod Touch Released

Here comes to another new jailbreak tool called “Spirit”, developed by Comex. The Spirit tool offers the long-awaited untethered jailbreak for iPhone 3GS and works for old models of iPhone. The tool also supports untethered jailbreak for iPod touch, as well as, the iPad using the latest firmwares.

The Spirit tool is free for download and supports both Mac & Windows platform. Like the blackra1n tool that you may be familiar with, the jailbreak process via Spirit is also simple and straight-forward. By just one-click, it then jailbreaks your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch automatically.

Spirit is the first jailbreak tool to bring untethered jailbreaking to iPhone 3GS and iPod touch (third generation). But before you download the tool, please read through the following highlights carefully:

  • Spirit is an untethered jailbreak for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch on the latest firmwares, including firmware 3.1.2, 3.1.3, and the iPad-exclusive 3.2. So, if you are using lower version of firmware (aka iPhone OS), you will need to upgrade your device to the latest firmware version before using Spirit.
  • Spirit is not a carrier unlock – Don’t mix Spirit with other iPhone unlock tool (e.g. blacksn0w). You can only use Spirit to jailbreak your device. It will not unlock your iPhone.
  • If you are already using a tethered jailbroken iPhone 3GS and want to use Spirit for untethered jailbreak, you will need to restore your device via iTunes. However, if you are using unlocked iPhone 3G or 3GS, do not upgrade to iPhone OS 3.1.3 or else you will lose the unlock. Please stay with iPhone OS 3.1.2 for jailbreaking.
  • Spirit does not hacktivate your iPhone. To use it, it expects your device has already been activated. In other words, if your iPhone is stuck at the “Connect to iTunes or Emergency Call screen”, Spirit will not work for you.
  • Make sure you’re using iTunes 9 or up before using Spirit.

If you do not understand any of the above points, just raise your question in the comment. Do not try to use the jailbreak tool without fully understand the consequence.

To download the jailbreak tool, you can check out its official website. It’s free for download. Stay tuned. I will further show you the procedures of using Spirit jailbreak in later post.

Tip: What’s untethered jailbreak? First, let me explain what tethered jailbreak means. When you say an iPhone is tethered jailbreak, that means the iPhone needs to be jailbroken again when it is rebooted or run out of battery. If you’re using iPhone 2G or 3G, you do not have this problem at all as blackra1n and other jailbreak tools already supports the so-called untethered jailbreak. Once jailbroken, it stays in the jailbreak state even after reboot. However, for iPhone 3GS, only tethered jailbreak is available before the release of Spirit.

FYI, Spirit is not the only way to have an untethered JB on 3G[S]. I’m running an untethered JB with OS 3.1 using redsn0w. Works 4.0 for the last 9 mos.

Yes, please don’t bother with spirit as of now. Wait until both the unlock and jailbreak are available for 3.1.3. I recently tried to use spirit on my 3.1.2 unlocked 3gs, and my iphone got stuck in dfu mode. I tried using blackra1n to boot it up as usual and nothing. Now I wish i never messed with it. After a couple of hours of trying everything I knew I got frustrated and just restored my phone. I’m currently stuck on 3.1.3 firmware with a phone I cant use, only jailbroken but no carrier unlock until dev team decides to release the the unlock software. Man do I miss my iphone…..

So how is the spirit jailbreak on the Ipad? I just got a new ipad wifi (no 3g) and was wondering what was available for jailbreak and if I should do it or not. I may just try it for phone so i can leave a comment here about it.

  14. Worried June 7, 2010 at 1:01 am #

Stevo it says above it will work so you should be fine. I however was wondering if spirit will work for me because I have an iPod touch 2nd gen?

  16. Worried June 7, 2010 at 12:25 pm #

      Dear Jamal.
You are stuck with 3.1.3 firmware, there is nothing you can do at the time been. The solution will be available in matter of days. so keep your 3GS as is and don’t play with it for now. Keep visiting this great blog for unlocking details once available.

      Thanx

Hi Simon, since the release, I accidentally upgraded to 3.1.3. My iphone 3GS is since then in DFU mode.

I cannot use the ultrasn0w for unlocking, and you mention that I should not mix Spirit (to jailbreak it again) with any other software.

What should I do then? How do I jailbreak it again, activate it and unlock it?

    Thanks,

Sorry if this sounds stupid but im pretty new to this anyway i have a 3GS on 3.1.2 and i used Blackrain to jailbreak it, To use this it is saying that i would have to restore my phone first does that mean just uninstalling blackrain from the Iphone itself or upgrading it to 3.1.3
