iPad International Launch Delayed Due to High Demand

by Simon Ng on April 15, 2010

On Wednesday, Apple announced to postpone the international rollout of iPad by a month as the demand for the iPad in the U.S. is so high. If you do not live in U.S. and want to buy an iPad, you will need to wait until end May or even longer depending on the country you live in.

As explained in its press release, Apple claimed the demand of iPad in U.S. is far higher than that expected. For just the first week as iPad released, Apple has delivered over 500,000 iPads:

“Although we have delivered more than 500,000 iPads during its first week, demand is far higher than we predicted and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks as more people see and touch an iPad,” Apple said in a statement. “We have also taken a large number of pre-orders for iPad 3G models for delivery by the end of April.”

Faced with this surprisingly strong US demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of iPad by one month, until the end of May.

According to the previous press release issued in early March, Apple originally planned to rollout both 3G and WiFi models of iPad in late April in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK, with additional countries added later this year.

Apple will announce the international pricing and start to take pre-orders online on May 10. As in U.S., the WiFi models of iPad costs US$499 for 16GB of memory, US$599 for 32GB, and US$699 for 64GB. The 3G + WiFi models cost US$629 for 16GB, US$729 for 32GB, and US$829 for 64GB.
