By now, you should have a basic understanding about iPhone OS 4 after reading through the earlier post and the video walkthrough about the new features.
One common question about iPhone OS 4 is the device compatibility. Particularly, for those using the original iPhone (i.e. 2G), they wonder if they can still upgrade to OS4 when it’s released this summer.
Okay, let’s take a deeper look at the iPhone OS 4 compatibility.
iPhone 2G / 1st Generation iPod touch
According to Apple’s official description about iPhone OS 4 compatibility, the new OS will only support iPhone 3G, 3GS and 2nd/3rd generation of iPod touch:
iPhone OS 4 will work with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and the second- and third-generation iPod touch this summer, and with iPad in the fall. Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 3GS and the third-generation iPod touch (32GB and 64GB models from late 2009).
That implies the original iPhone and 1st generation iPod touch are excluded from the OS 4 upgrade. The original iPhone was released in mid-2007. So, it’s time for you to upgrade. To be exact, Apple forces you to upgrade the iPhone to enjoy the latest features.
iPhone 3G / 2nd Generation iPod touch
For iPhone 3G and 2nd generation iPod touch user, you are allowed to upgrade to iPhone OS 4 but can only enjoy a subset of the features. Apple does not explicitly list out the features that are not available on these devices. But, it’s sure that multitasking will not be available due to lower amount of RAM and slower CPU.
Note: iPhone 3G comes with only 128MB of RAM, while 3GS and third-generation of iPod touch have 256MB.
iPhone 3GS / 3rd Generation iPod touch
If you’re using iPhone 3GS and the 3rd generation iPod touch, you’ll get full support of iPhone OS 4 and enjoy the “over 100 new features”.
So, for those using iPhone 2G and 3G, are you going to upgrade the iPhone just for iPhone OS 4?

I think os 4.0 change iphone users
Espacially multi tasking.
So any people who have iphone will not use os 2.0
why tha fuck there is no os 4 for iphone 2g !!!! This was ex most expensive iphone .. we payed thousand for it and what a fuck .. 3g and 2g is almost identical, so why 3g can run os 4 ? fu.. apple . always lying to fans .. Hardware incompatibilities ,, ye right “think different”, be apple slave and buy new iphone
Yeah,you are right,i bought a new ipod touch 2nd a few weeks ago,i am using the latest itunes on windows 7…and i clicked on the update button to update to OS 4…and wtf?!!! Its not working,it just simly fuking…it says something about error…and now tell me,where the fuck is the mistake? i will not buy some fuking Macbook only for the reason of compatibility…..damm with apple ans mainly with the boss Steve Jobs…when i was using windows mobile,i was able to update,but it was slow…this was fast but i am not able to update it…fuck,fufk and fuck apple…
I have some clarifications about the compatibility issues of 4.0, apple did not include Iphone 3gs 16gb on their compatibility description. Does it mean 16gb 3gs can’t get the full feature of the new software? Thanks
