iTunes 9.1 Update Adds iBook Support and iPad Sync… Possibly Kills Sync for Jailbroken iPhone

With only a few days left before the iPad debut, Apple releases iTunes v9.1 to add support for the upcoming iPad. According to the release of Apple, the new version of iTunes comes with several new features and bug fixes including:

  • Sync with iPad to enjoy your favorite music, movies, TV shows, books and more on the go
  • Organize and sync books you’ve downloaded from iBooks on iPad or added to your iTunes Library
  • Rename, rearrange, or remove Genius Mixes

The update also incorporates a number of security fixes. For information about the security content, you can further refer to Apple’s support page.

As you can reveal from the feature list, this update is specifically designed for the iPad. Unless you have ordered an iPad or plan to buy one, you can stay with iTunes 9.0. It’s not a must-upgrade.

For those using jailbroken iPhone and iPod touch, please take note. Some users have reported that the iTunes 9.1 failed to sync with jailbroken iPhone. So, if you’re using jailbroken iPhone, particularly for those jailbroken via blackra1n, please hold off the upgrade.

Update: The sync problem only affects those jailbroken iPhone using blackra1n for the jailbreak. If you used redsn0w or PwnageTool to jailbreak your iPhone, it’s safe to upgrade iTunes to 9.1, as iPhone Dev team confirmed.
