Last Thursday, Apple released a beta version of iPhone OS SDK 3.2 to developers after the announcement of iPad. As reported by Engadget, iPhone OS 3.2 already contains rudimentary support for video calling, as confirmed with their “extremely trusted sources”.
It’s claimed that developers has discovered program code (in the SDK) to accept and decline video conference, flip a video feed, as well as, run the video wall in either full screen mode or in just a portion of the screen.
What that suggests is that the next version of iPhone or iPad may come with a front camera and support video call/conferencing. You will be able to chat in full screen mode or in a portion of the screen and do other things at the same time.
This is not the first time that we speculates Apple will bring video call to iPhone. However, this is the very first time the SDK shows us some solid proofs. For those using Mac OS X, you may know the iChat app, bundled with the OS, is a cool instant messaging application that supports video chat and video conferencing. The best is you can share a Keynote presentation or video with your friends over iChat. As an iPhone user (also a potential buyer of iPad), I’m looking forward to Apple to bring us the iChat-style video call on iPhone and iPad.

Other than the video call feature, Engadget also claimed that iPhone OS 3.2 supports file downloads and local storage in the browser. That means you can download file from the web within Safari and open it locally using other iPhone apps. Also, iPhone jailbreak developer, Ryan Petrich, confirmed the below features bundled in the SDK:
- A spell checker with multiple dictionaries and user-added entries
- A much richer text support for apps
- The ability to selectively draw to external displays
- Location-aware ads in Maps
- File upload ability in Safari
- Prototype support for a “handwriting keyboard”
As usual, Apple does not confirm any of the above features. But it’s very exciting to see the endless innovation of iPhone OS. Can’t wait for the debut of iPhone 4.0.
Note: iPhone OS 3.2 is a specially designed iPhone OS for iPad only. Haven’t heard of iPad? You can check out the announcement of iPad for details.
