iPhone OS 3.2 SDK Released but it’s for iPad Only

by Simon Ng on January 30, 2010

Well, you might expect Apple to unveil iPhone OS 4.0 during the Wednesday’s event, in addition to the announcement of iPad. What it comes out is there is no word about iPhone OS 4.0. Instead, the iPad runs on a special edition of iPhone OS that is completely designed for the iPad with a version number of 3.2.

So, what’s the new features come along with this special version of iPhone OS?

A day after the iPad announcement, Apple also released the iPhone OS 3.2 SDK (i.e. the development kit for iPad) to developers. According to the official documentation, here are a number of interesting features for the latest version of iPhone OS:

  • External Display Support – iPad applications will be able to display content to an external display using the Dock connector.
  • File Sharing – Allows the sharing of file via a shared file directory. It is supposed that you can mount that shared folder on your Mac or PC. Presumably you can transfer any types of files such as iWork documents via that shared folder.
  • New rich text support – New feature in UITextInput that allows different fonts, sizes and more.
  • Universal Apps support – Supports the creation of what so-called universal apps. That means the apps can run iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

In the official documentation, Apple also highlights that there is No Multitasking Support in the OS 3.2. Like the current version of iPhone OS, you can only launch one application at a time. With a 1GHz custom-designed processor, I still can’t figure out why Apple doesn’t allow multitasking. Interestingly, we will need to find a way to jailbreak iPad to enjoy backgrounder, a hack on iPhone for running multiple apps simultaneously.

So, what about the next version OS for iPhone and iPod touch? My guess is Apple will debut it in coming June along with the launch of new iPhone. Anyway, this is just my blind guess. What do you think?
