iPhone OS 4.0 To Bring System Wide Multi-touch, Multitasking and More

by Simon Ng on January 21, 2010

As you’re awaiting Apple’s special event on January 27 that hopefully with both tablet and iPhone OS 4.0 announced, Boy Genius Report (BGR) claimed they got some leaked details about the upcoming OS ahead of the event.

According to BGR, here are the upcoming features you’ll see in OS 4.0:

  • There will be system wide multi-touch gestures OS-wide.
  • Full support of multitasking and it’ll offer “a few new ways” to run applications in the background.
  • Better and more efficient UI. Many graphical and UI changes are implemented to make navigating through the OS easier and more efficient.
  • The OS update will be available for only the iPhone 3G and 3GS (Not a good news for the original iPhone user and definitely Apple is pushing you to upgrade to the new iPhone)
  • Some brand new syncing ability for the contacts and calendar applications will be available.

The source also mentioned the new features will put Apple ahead in the smartphone market because it will make them more like full-fledged computers than any other phones to date. Everyone is “really excited.”

As usual, Apple will not comment on rumors. We’ll need to wait until next Wed for Steve Jobs’ official announcement. Any other features you would like to see in the upcoming OS? For me, I wish Apple will revamp the lock screen and allow iPhone to sync with iTunes wirelessly (No more USB cable). So, what’s your wishlist?

Tip: For jailbroken iPhone user, you can install Backgrounder and enable multitasking. The best is it works on all models of iPhone including iPhone 2G, 3G and 3GS.

A proper way to transfer files to/from pc and a builtin file browser/viewer/player is badly needed.

The iPhone’s phone book is limited only by the phone’s available memory. Each contact holds eight phone numbers; e-mail, Web site, and street addresses; a job title and department; a nickname; a birthday; and notes. You can’t save callers to groups, but you can store your preferred friends to a favorites menu for easy access. You can assign contacts a photo for caller ID and assign them one of 25 polyphonic ringtones. We should note, however, that there’s no voice dialing and you can’t use MP3 files as ringtones. Other basic features include an alarm clock, a calculator, a world clock, a stopwatch, a timer and a notepad. There’s a vibrate mode but it’s a tad light.

Batter Life is something Apple should be taking care of..This could get resolved with the newer firmware version hopefully, with the Apps consuming less battery.
