Gunman is best described as an augmented reality laser tag game using the iPhone camera. There is an excellent video from playgunman.com that shows the game in action as you read on. The makers describe the game as “urban warfare meets augmented reality battle with your friends” on the iPhone.
This game does not disappoint it is a lot of fun, it is fun, addictive and it draws lots of attention if you use it at work. I played at home with my cousin and he loved it.
The game has three modes: One-on-One, Multiplayer or Pro. In One-on-One, you begin by selecting your opponent’s shirt color. You have the choice of five colors to choose from. The color detection is the hardest part of the program and you should ensure you are wearing one of those five colors, not something close, but an exact shirt of the color selected. In Multiplayer mode, you need a Wi-Fi connection and can then play with up to 5 players. In Pro mode, you simply click and shot at anything you want – passersby, folks on the bus, co-workers that don’t have an iPhone, the boss…you get the picture.

The game is very simple and intuitive. Once you have chosen your mode and the color of shirts your opponent(s) are wearing, you then get a screen that is the iPhone Camera, thus showing your reality, with a crosshairs. Just aim the target and tap on the screen to shoot. To reload the weapon, simply shake the phone and fire again and again until you score a hit. Your opponent’s iPhone will vibrate if he/she is hit. And the app captures a screenshot of your hit.
At the end of the match, you can save that screenshot for prosperity sake and tweet it to the world to show you dominance over your opponent.
As I mentioned above, this game is a lot of fun and really, really addictive. The makers advise you play Gunman in well-lit areas and I second that for accurate color recognition.
The developers have given the app away for free (limited-time only) to market the app. Normally the app is sold at US$0.99. You can have a lot of fun with this game if you have some friends with iPhones that would like to play with you. If you don’t, well I am not sure how much fun it is to just point and shot. So, act quick to download the game via this direct iTunes link.
The developers are also promising some interesting upgrades to this app: location based support, badges/achievements for multi-player and more weapons (semi-automatic weapons and grenades). Interesting, I look forward to those upgrades!
