by Simon Ng on January 17, 2010

ESPN recently launched their 2010 world cup application for iPhone. With this app, soccer fans can access the update-to-date information about the upcoming FIFA world cup, with 32 countries competing the trophy.

The interface of the app is simple and intuitive. As soon as the app is fired up, it gives you a live clock showing the counting down to the start of the first game in world cup 2010. The home screen shows you a variety of information like the favorite countries selected by you, quotes about the World Cup, news, schedule and fixtures, tournament history, venues, and a predictor.

Simply tap on the team button, you can view the details of the 8 groups, with specific details on each country. By clicking the details of any country, it will show the summary about that country’s team, recent news, player’s information, International Friendlies and Fixtures for the 2010 World Cup. On the Player pages the user can see an overview and bio data of the player, player stats including things like goals scored in each tournaments, and player logs.

If you want to have more information about the venues like year completed, cost to build the stadium, capacity, trivia and home to team, all you need is to browse through the 10 stadium profiles.

To know about the history of the past 18 world cups you need to click the Tournament history menu. This lists the winners, teams involved, and fun facts like surprises, notable absentees, innovations, and trivia.

Most importantly, the app brings you the tournament schedule and fixture. As the company mentioned, there are more features coming in the next version. You’ll see World Cup alert, Fan Photo Gallery, live score and ESPN game cast soon.

If you are interested to stay tuned with the news about this year’s world cup at South Africa, the ESPN 2010 World Cup app is a must-have application for you. I forget to mention, the app is completely free. You can simply click on this iTunes link to download the app.

Will this App, relay LIVE football match during World Cup for less cost, or just giving only the Stats.

@mobile review,

No video streaming yet. For now, it only shows the stats and other world cup related news.

Hmm, this is not available in the UK itunes store… let me see… ah yes, in the US store. I must admit, I did not know soccer was played in the US but hey, one learns every day.

For the UK user too lazy to sign up for a US account,, try the Telegraph World Cup app which looks pretty similar.
