Dragon Search for iPhone Lets You Search with Voice and it’s Free (for Limited Time)

by Simon Ng on December 19, 2009

Dragon Search AppNuance Communications, the creator of Dragon Dictation app for iPhone, has just released its second iPhone app called Dragon Search. Using the same Dragon NaturallySpeaking technology behind Dragon Dictation, Dragon Search lets you search the web by voice. No more typing is required.

Simply launch the app and speak the search term. The Dragon Search app automatically converts it into text, submit the search queries and shows you results from Google, iTunes, Twitter, Wikipedia and YouTube. The interface is well-designed, so you can easily switch between different sources of search results via the innovative Dragon Search Carousel. Google is the default search engine but you can change it to Bing or Yahoo via the Settings screen.

Same as the Dragon Dictation app, the Search app works best in quiet environment. It works really well when I tested it at my home. But the voice recognition performance may vary in noisy environment. Overall, it’s really fun to use and awesome app.

Dragon Search is not the first iPhone app to provide “Search by Voice”. The Google Mobile app and the iPhone from Bing also come with a voice recognition engine to power voice search. However, the Dragon Search app allows users to search across multiple search engines and other useful sources at once.

When using the app, your iPhone needs to have a data connection. This is because the app actually sends your voice clip back to Nuance server for speech-to-text conversion over WiFi, 3G or EDGE network. From my experience the performance over 3G network is pretty good. You won’t experience much delay in the conversion.

Dragon Search app is now available on US App Store [iTunes link] and it’s free. But the company will probably charge it in near future. So, grab it as soon as you can!

Hey All,

I’ve downloaded this app and i receive an error, “Recognition Error, No speech detected. Please try again” I also receive an audio error when I try to tag a song in Shazam. Has anyone else seen this?

I’m running the 3.1.2, jailbreak with pushfix installed.

Thanks
