How To Enable Internet Tethering on iPhone After Blackra1n Jailbreak

by Simon Ng on November 9, 2009

Internet Tethering for iPhoneOther than the YouTube, GPS, Wifi problems, some AT&T users reported they lose the Internet Tethering option after jailbreaking with blackra1n. If you haven’t heard of Internet Tethering, it’s a feature on iPhone that lets you share the 3G connection with your laptop (PC or Mac) to connect to the Internet. With tethering, your iPhone acts just like a wireless modem to provide your laptop with Internet connection.

If you find the Internet tethering option is missing after blackra1n jailbreak, try to follow these procedures to bring it back.

1. First, make sure you’re using blackra1n to jailbreak your iPhone. If you haven’t done that, check out this jailbreak guide for details.

2. Next, on your iPhone, launch Safari and point it to http://help.benm.at.

3. Scroll down and tap on “Mobileconfigs”.

4. Select your country and then your existing carrier. Say, you’re using AT&T, select “U.S.A.” and “AT&T”.

5. Tap “Install” and then select “Install Now” to confirm the installation of carrier profile.

6. After installation, restart your iPhone (i.e. Power it off and then start it up again)

7. If everything is fine, go to “Settings” -> “General” -> “Network”. The Internet Tethering option should appear.

When you need to use Internet Tethering, switch the option to ON to enable it.

As always, leave us comment and let us know if this method works for your carrier.

Note: This is a workaround to enable tethering on your iPhone. Some carriers have intended to disable this option on iPhone. If you have anything uncertain, you may further check out with your carrier.

Tried it on 3G with 3.1.2 firmware. Does NOT work. It messed up my ring and sounds. Gotta go back in and reset them.

After turn off & on, when into general > network etc..no display of the option as pictured..
Not working!!!

After following the above procedure outlined by Simon, if internet tethering option does not appear, follow this and your problem should be solved.

Settings–> General —> Reset—> Reset Network settings….

Do post here whether this helped u or not…

@Jagney – Nope, that was the first thing that I tried…
From other research around the net, it appears that the latest official AT&T carrier settings update disabled the tethering options in Settings>General>Network in a way that just adding a new carrier settings file doesn’t fix.
We might have to wait until AT&T starts up its official $$$ tethering service and puts out a new carrier settings update that re-enables it…
on the other hand, someone who knows what they are doing/where stuff is on the phone might be able to re-enable it, since it is probably just hidden…

Thanks,

works fine on a JAILBROKEN iPhone. I have a 3G. Updated to 3.1.2 w/the blackrain app and all’s well. Tethering works fine after I resync’d my backup! I’m a happy camper!

You need to install blacksn0w for this to work

I updated to 3.1.2, then ran blackra1n, then ran appleguru.org tethering hack
I then had tethering option, no prob
then iTunes asked if I wanted to update carrier settings – I stupidly said OK
tethering was gone
I re-ran blackra1n, re-ran appleguru, no dice
I tried benm.at tethering hack
no dice
I tried Network Reset
no dice
I then ran Sn0w
dice (although it hung on install w/ spinning wheel on writing log page)
I now have tethering again
thx to all (beware the iTunes carrier update)

I used it with my 3G version 3.1.2 and Carrier update AT&T 5.6. I uploaded the program along with blackra1n and it works. However my voicemail no longer synced. I removed it and both are now working just fine.

I see the Tethering option on my Iphone setting, but what do I have to do to use the internet on the computer after that?

I’ve blackra1n installed, I’ve sn0w installed, I installed appleguru but tethering didn’t show up at all under network settings. Benm didn’t even installed. Came up with an error.

Did anyone read elsewhere?
Those who have Successfully BlackRa1n’d & Snow’d this work for sure, not nessecarily this exact config, but the tethering proccess so keep web browsing for more names of the downloadable configs.

KEY NOTE – AFTER DOWNLOAD RESET NETWORK CONFIGS TWICE! TWICE!
Usually that works.

@Ryan

You know youtube.com and some of those video’s are actually legit, and could help you fix your visual voicemail, and whatnot and whatif problems..

Well, I didn’t use benm, I used peacefulinsanity (http://m.peacefulinsanity.com/Tether.mobileconfig) but anyway, wanted to emphasize the point in thread #13. Click “Cancel” for the carrier update question–I stupidly said yes to it the 1st time too. I read his thread but it didn’t register w/me until I thought about it after the tethering option never showed up for me either. So, had to do restore a 2nd time, then after that, blackra1n, then sn0w–good to go.

Evidently, AT&T has found out how to block this and is doing it through the carrier update–luckily you can bypass it.

All this came about after a frozen screen caused me to have to restore (2nd time in about 3-4 months).

LESSON: SAY CANCEL TO THE CARRIER UPDATE IF YOU WANT THE TETHERING OPTION TO COME UP!!!
