How to Fix YouTube, GPS, WiFi Problems after Blackra1n Jailbreak

by Simon Ng on November 7, 2009

blackra1n - Cannot Connect to YouTubeBlackra1n is a great jailbreak tool for iPhone 2G, 3G or 3GS running OS 3.1.2. It’s simple and quick. But it does come with some bugs. If you have already followed my guide to jailbreak your iPhone with blackra1n, you may encounter one of the below issues:

  • Fail to launch YouTube
  • GPS doesn’t work if you’re using iPhone 3G/3GS
  • WiFi is not working

I guess GeoHot, the developer of blackra1n, will fix these bugs in the next version update. However, at the mean time, you can follow these workarounds to fix the issues.

How To Fix WiFi Issue

To fix the WiFi issue after blackra1n issue, you can simply reset the network settings. Go to “Settings” -> “General” -> “Reset” and select “Reset Network Settings”. Tap on the “Reset Network Settings” button again to confirm. After resetting, the WiFi issue should be fixed.

How To Fix YouTube and GPS Issues

It’s very interesting the PushFix patch, which is originally designed for fixing push notification, can be used to fix the YouTube and GPS issues. To install the PushFix, you can follow Step 1 to 8 of this installation guide.

PushFix - Install

After patching with PushFix, your iPhone should be able to use YouTube and GPS.

Nice post Simon. These fixes seem to work ;)

I’m only experiencing the wifi issue. Unfortunately, resetting the network settings did not fix the problem. I already had an app called wifiFoFum (iTunes app store) which was detecting all wifi signals and allows you join networks. Connecting via it did work, however when I went into the OS wifi settings, while showing and being connected, it continues to not detect others in the area.

This is precisely why its better to wait for an unlock from the iPhone Dev Team. I am still holding on to 3.0. GeoHot is a genius no doubt. But I guess the iPhone Dev team checks and rechecks all issues with the iPhone before making a release while others don’t have that much patience.

Hi Kamal,

Oh how I concur. I never rush to upgrade/update especially delicate issues like the iphone.
I’m hoping for the DEV TEAM as well.

Hi all,
I know this is not related to the above posts but I need help please.
Recently I mistakenly updated my Skype to the new version 1.2.2 via my phone App Store and since then, it crashes. When I opened the application, it said “not compatible with modified phones”.
Any thoughts…solution…?

Thanx

@Steve, that’s just a warning message. I think you can continue to use Skype on jailbroken iPhone.

Reply

9 Steve November 9, 2009 at 7:51 pm

Thnx Simon.
Skype loads for a few seconds, and crashes. I had no probs with the previous version(1.2.1.09).
My iPhone OS is 3.0.1
Do you reckon I should update my OS?

Reply

10 Steve November 12, 2009 at 8:55 pm

Hi Guys,
For guys with SKYPE crashing, the culprit is the iphoneDelivery app. Apparently it clashes with 3GUnrestrictor. The developer has come up with an update (0.2.1) which delimits the 3G function in Skype, but then you still have to disable Unrestrictor.
So it’s a matter of a lesser evil. In as much as I really like iphonedelivery, pending a lasting solution, I’d rather temporarily uninstall it to use Skype.
This is the link to the application update by the developer.
Hope this piece helps…

Hi,

I’m not sure but I’m currently on OS 3.0.1. could that affect it?
I’m not in the habit of rushing to update anything either in my computer or iphone…I normally wait a while.

Thnx for your comment though.

hi Simon… just have some concern or problem. this may not be directly related to what has been posted here and maybe some people out there are also experiencing the same problem. actually, it’s not only me who has this kind of problem but also my other colleagues in the office who has an iphone. we actually have iphone 3GS and we updated it to OS 3.1.2 and jailbroken and unlocked with blackra1n / blacksn0w. the problem is we cannot connect to the internet using the cellular data network. whenever we tried to connect this error pops out “Could not activate cellular data network. You are not subscribed to a cellular data service.” but if we connect to the internet using Wifi, it is working well. do you have any comments or suggestions or solution or recommendation about this problem? hope to hear from you soon. thanks always for your support.

any chance i could know what you did?

it was working an hour ago… so i’m a tad worried now…

just unlocked last night and bought a new sim card with new data plan in order to use the phone to it’s full potential..

Stupid untethered jailbreak seems to screw everything up!!!

Reply

25 Jet January 20, 2010 at 5:31 am

To newbee, actually network providers have different settings. some you can see the configurations (APN) and some others you cannot see the configurations. fortunately, for my network provider, the APN is visible (it can be found in “General>Network>Cellular Data Network”. there are 2 APNs there, one for Cellular Data and the other is for MMS. after JB and Unlock… my APN under Cellular Data is web1 and the APN under MMS is mms1. at first, i tried to connect to the network using the cellular data network but it was not successful or “could not activate cellular data network”. what i did is i changed the Cellular Data APN to web2 and MMS2. i turned off my iphone and switch it on again the connect to internet using the cellular data network… and it was a success. but since my network provider are getting or deducting from my load/balance every now and then which i don’t know for what even if am not using the internet, i changed the cellular data APN back to web1. i reboot my iphone and there it is, i am no longer getting deductions from my network provider. and whenever i want to connect to the internet using the cellular data network, i have to change web1 to web2 again. and it works for me.

Anyone having problem with Skype over 3G after Blackra1n and Blacksn0w? I seem to have a problem. Skype would log in and let me make a call. After like 5 sec the calls are dropped and the signal goes from full bar to zero bar to “searching” and back to full bar. I am using VoIPover3G to use skype.

How do you uninstall iphonedelivery? What does iphonedelievery do? VoIPover3G worked perfectly on 3.0 and yellowsn0w. Maybe it’s just a matter of time for others to figure out all the problems with 3.1.2

iPhoneDelivery notifies you that your SMS has been delivered. Iphone didn’t come with SMS auto delivery. It can be installed from Cydia.
Well, in my case, my OS is still 3.0.1 and prior to my Skype update, it worked well.
I stumbled upon an article written by the Iphonedelivery developer Francois.Guilleme.
He acknowledged that his software clashed with 3G Unristrictor and in the process crashes Skype.

I performed the jailbreak with my desktop (which I also use to sync my iphone), but I have tried to use the tethering feature on my two laptops and it doesn’t recognize the iphone source at all, whereas it works instantly with my desktop.

OK so i left my phone over night and it turned on after just staying on the apple logo for hours and not booting up (read my post above)…but instead of not being able to pick up wifi, which was problem before, the wifi was greyed out!!!

so i turned the phone off and on (literally, just held power button and turned it off) and WOW wifi was not greyed out any more but still could not pick up wifi…i was not gonna reset the network settings again after the saga with the phone stuck on apple logo so did some reading and found out there are alot of faulty wifi chips in iphone, something to do with over heating, one thread suggested u put the iphone in freezer for 5min…i was not prepared to do that so put it on ice pack (the back of the phone) for about 5-7 minutes and it started to pick up wifi! BUT!!!! the signal is weak and i some times loose it unless i’m up the ass of my wireless router…now this tells me its a hardware issue, i think. i am going to start a fresh phone and hope wifi works properly again.

If not its back to the apple store! just hope they can’t tell I’ve fiddled with it???? Any one know if they can tell????

And all this happened after i used sn0w to unlock, before it was working perfectly! Also not every phone with this problem is having it cause of hardware, there is a software issue too, but what software issue makes the wifi pick up half signal or no signal????

Reply

65 dd January 2, 2010 at 6:19 am

So for all you guys that have greyed out wifi…try this.

1. Turn off the iphone.

2. leave it for 10 min to cool down.

3. chill the back of the iphone with an ice pack (or whatever) for 5-7 minutes

4. Turn the phone back on

if wifi is not back then god help you, start a fresh phone and if that don’t work its time to visit the apple store…just hope they can’t tell u JB & unlocked even after restoring to factory settings.

If this works for anyone please let us all know, its a long shot but hey give it a try!

Hey all,

Even my WiFi was not working since 2 months. Had tried all possible ways. Tonight, miracle happened and my wifi started working. I have done the following steps:
1) switched off my iphone
2) took ice bag and kept my iphone (wrapped in a plastic in order to prevent the condensed water) on top of it. This is just to cool the device.
3) switched on and did the reset network settings
4) went to the wifi icon in settings and it detected..BINGO!
5) it asked for the password and then is all fine.

I just want to convey this to you all who are still trying….coz I can understand the hassle u r facing!

Cheers mates and happy New Year 2010!

Hi livelife,
Restore your device to original factory setting thru itunes.(before this remove your sim) Then it’ll be restored to firmwire originally it had 3.1.x. Now the device is locked. Use blackrain to jailbreak it first. Wait the device to reboot.
(when your device is restored to original firmwire, wifi will be there. goto settings & turnon wifi)
Click on the blackrain icon on device. Make sure you have wifi connection available now to download cydia.
select cydia & install it.
Then select bootneuter2.1 and install it.
Make sure you select bootloader version 3.9, turn ON “neuter”, turn OFF “Fakeblank” and turn ON “unlock”. Now you have a jailbroken and unlocked iphone.
Insert your sim now. Try again and see if this works for you.

OR SIMPLY WATCH THE BELOW VIDEO.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uCPZgX1pY0
Let me know if it works for you.
Enjoy!

Hello Jacsbalic,
No luck…. didnt detect wifi….

72 jacsbalic January 5, 2010 at 12:00 am

Livelife,

Turn off Push Email in Settings and restart your iPhone
If you can see your network in the list but it doesn’t connect, press the little blue arrow and then tap “Renew DHCP lease” or “Forget this Network”. Try to connect to Wifi again.
Reset network settings (Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Network settings)
Reset all settings (Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset All Settings)
Restore your iPhone with latest firmware and setup as a new phone in iTunes
Put your iPhone into Airplane mode and then turn on Wifi
If you’re using 802.11n router, try to change it to support “G” only instead of “mixed” or “N” protocol

Disable Wifi router security and see if you can connect without password
If you have to use Wifi security, try to set your Wifi security to WPA2
Change your Wifi router channel to 1, 6 or 11 or simply change it to other numbers that may work for some users
Upgrade the firmware of your Wifi router

Deerman on the discussion list also proposed a method to resolve the issue and you can also try it out:

1. Change your WLAN-/WIFI-station to non secured (no password)
2. Try to connect your iPhone – most probably it won’t connect
3. Change airplane mode to “On” and wait 10 sec
4. Change airplane mode to “Off” and wait 10 sec
5. Change airplane mode to “On” and wait 10 sec
6. Change WIFI to “Off” and wait 10 sec
7. Change WIFI to “On” and wait 10 sec
8. Try to connect – most probably it will connect!
9. Now change your WLAN-/WIFI-station to secured 128-Bit-WEP and give it a password
10. Change WIFI to “Off” and wait 10 sec
11. Change WIFI to “On” and wait 10 sec
12. Try to connect with your new password – most probably it will connect again!

If none of the above works for you, I suggest you to contact local Apple Store for help.

I’m afraid i have no more suggestions LiveLife, if u still have warranty on your phone get back to apple store and get a new phone(or try SDGs fix jus above)! Good luck! glad to see the ice pack worked for SDG, what a crazy fix! beware though SDG this must mean there is a hardware issue and if u still have warranty on your phone i would suggest getting a new 1 from apple store cause faulty hardware ain’t gonna last long.

I will try keep you all updated as to how my phone operates in the coming weeks and will also let you know what happens when i start a new phone, planing to do this in the next 2 weeks as i am very busy with work at the moment, if wifi still not working 100% i will return to apple store for a new phone.

Let me tell you what all I have tried:
1. Set the phone in DFU and tried to reinstall the 3.1.2 firmware – Didnt detect WIFI
2. I ran blackra1n.com – let it rain…watever…. I notice the blackrain icon on my springboard but when I run, says no wifi/no internet connection
3. tried ifunbox to browse through the phone and physcially install swifi (fix) – said the iphone is not jailbroken….
4. tried using ifunbox to install blacksn0w.dylib – it placed the file, wouldnt run cuz the phone is locked and not jail broken
5. reset network 3 times in a row – no luck
6. rest network 6 times in a row – no luck
7. erase all settings – retore to factory default – took abt 10 mins… no luck
8. kept the phone in my freezer for 10 mins and did what SDG said —- no luck
9. I cant use winscp – U/N:root P/W: alpine, asks for IP address…. i cant give the ip address cuz no wifi to ssh…
10. cant jailbreak or install cydia
11. Used cyder option……….no luck…didnt work…

Lastly, my Iphone 3G, ran out of warranty in November 2009.

So, end of the day, I am with a brick phone…. cant jailbreak, no unlock, no cydia, no wifi

I was reading through forums in which GEOHOT, said the wifi is known issue with Apple’s firmware…. I hope he comes up with a fix or if anybody has another other solution please advice. Thanks guys! Happy new year.

I found out that the GPS problem was caused only by balckra1n jailbreak. I restored my iPhone and GPS was working fine, but right after the jailbreak it wasn’t working anymore.

Only thing that helped me with non-working GPS was complete restore with PwnageTool.

Here is link to Windows jailbreak: http://www.redmondpie.com/jailbreak-and-unlock-iphone-3.1.2-firmware-on-windows-anu759/

And MacOS jailbreak: http://www.redmondpie.com/jailbreak-iphone-3.1.2-firmware-with-pwnagetool-3.1.4-qwo969/

I just followed the above instructions to jailbreak and unlock and encountered similar wi-fi problems. I could join my network but not connect. After unsuccessfully trying the above solutions I simply turned off my internet and turned it back on. The iphone then connected instantly once wifi connection was restored. Not sure if this will help others.

Thanks for the assistance.

Dear All, I have read all the post in here and notice that there are some good and bad advices.
I have an Iphone 3GS 3.1.2…. Jailbreak and unlock with Blackra1n, so every time that I need to boot the phone I need to make it rain again, I notice that some times after the reboot my wifi does not work, I fix it by turnig the wifi off and make it rain again, boilaa is fix.
Also if your youtube is not working find Push Fix from Beyouriphone, it is the onlyone that fixes this issue.

Kind Regards,
Maic Salazar

I have a 2g iphone. I had the youtube issue. and found the apt.macosmovil.com has the Push Fix app. I just did this tonight. I tried installing once, and rebooted the iphone and it still didn’t work. At this point, I felt like throwing the iPhone, but be patient. I went ahead and reinstalled the app, and rebooted again, and youtube now works! So, I can say try and reinstall it a couple times and you might get it to work. Hope this helps.

Love this blog. The wifi on my 2g started to go south at 3.0. I jailbroke and unlocked 3.12 with blackrain, upgraded my .ipcc to get internet, and found a PushFix at BeYourIPhone which solved my YouTube problem. Still have no wifi. Tried the multiple resetting thing, will try the ice pack trick next. May also go through whole restore again, as the last one left me with a different modem firmware (04.05.04_G) which may be wrong. Will probably also try Pushfix 2…
What a pain in the butt – glad this is not my primary phone.

great blog!!! but that is exactly my problem still :(
NO WIFI.

Phone: 3gs
Firmware: 3.1.2 (7D11)
Modem firmware: 05.11.07
Jailbreak used: Blackra1n

I ‘Reset Network Settings’ but than (cause it is a tethering jailbreak on 3GS) i need to blackra1n it after it reboots. so i think i can’t win? cause after that i am back where i was before the reset.

I have a MC model 3Gs, activated by AT&T.

I have noticed that the Wifi problem is operator related.

When I use a Israeli Orange sim I cannot connect to Wifi.

However when I use a Dutch Vodafone sim there is no problem to connect to wifi.

I hope that this can help someone find a solution to this annoyance…

My problem on my iphone is when I shutdown or low battery, then when I open it will appear the logo of itunes and it lock, you need to connect first on my imac with blackra1n to open it. Is theres such a way to open it even no need to connect on my imac or even without the blackra1n?

Thanks for the info … but there is one thing I discovered regarding the WiFi connectivity issues ..
Some times you would not be able to see the WiFi networks after installing some softwares … the option doesn’t always work … sometimes the iPhone would hang with the Apple logo … and it will reboot itself like 4 times ( taking as long as 30 minutes to come-up) .. then once it’s back up, you would have the WiFi option totally grayed out .. and you will need to reboot it again …
What I have discovered …
When you get the WiFi issue, don’t Reset the Network settings … instead .. just restart your iphone twice or trice .. and it will come up OK later on … usually it works with me after the 2nd or 3rd reboot …
Hope this information helps other people out ..

The following method worked for me:

1. Restore using redsn0w — installs jailbreaking package on your iPhone and reboots
2. Phone enters recovery mode on reboot
3. Restore using Blackra1n

Mine’s a 16GB iPhone 3GS (SN:XX945XXXX / 05.11.07)
Unlocked and Jailbroken using these 2 s/w on a MacBookPro

Iphone 2G 4.05.04_G 3.1.2 blackra1n

To fix the wifi-issue.
Simply turn on Airplane Mode to ON
Do the network reset once.
Reboot and viola its fixed.

Thanks to the dude that pointed that one out. It WORKS!

Hi,

I just got an iphone 3gs as a gift .. it was unlocked but i am not sure how that was done.

the issue is that there is no option of wi-fi. Not even greyed out but no option at all.

Even in Settings>General>About, there should be Wi-Fi option but its not.

Please help.

You could have mentioned that resetting all network connections would reboot the damn thing, Im now 600 miles away from my pc and my phone doesnt work. I know how to use black rain but now thanks to your omission, I’ve no phone until I get back…Please be more clear next time…Someone else could end up screwed like me….
