Complete Guide: Jailbreak and Unlock iPhone 2G 3.1.2 Using Blackra1n

by Simon Ng on November 5, 2009

blackra1n-jailbreak-logoAs you know, GeoHot has released blackra1n RC3 yesterday. The blackra1n is a popular jailbreak tool for iPhone 2G/3G/3GS running firmware 3.1.2. Unlike the older jailbreak tools (e.g. PwnageTool or Redsn0w), blackra1n is advertised as the fastest and simplest jailbreak tool. Yes, it’s super fast. Talking about the jailbreak process, it’ll only take you around 30 seconds to complete. And, the jailbreak process is very simple and straightforward. It’s so easy that I doubt if I need to put up a guide for blackra1n.

Anyways, not all iPhone jailbreakers are geeks. Probably some of the new comers to the jailbreak world may need some help. So, here is the complete guide for blackra1n that shows you how to jailbreak iPhone 2G running OS 3.1.2. (For iPhone 3G/3GS, I’ll post another guide in the next post.)

Before you dive into the jailbreak process, please read through the note carefully:

  • Make sure you use iTunes 9.0 or up for the jailbreak. If you are using older version of iTunes, please upgrade it first. You can download the latest version of iTunes from Apple.
  • Before jailbreaking, make sure you have backup all your contacts, sms, photos, etc via iTunes. Simply sync your iPhone and backup the iPhone data.
  • So, does it work with iPhone 2G previously jailbroken with PwnageTool or Redsn0w? Yes, it works!
  • Let me point this out again. This guide is for iPhone 2G. For iPhone 3G/3GS jailbreaking, please refer to this post.
  • Disclaimer: Jailbreaking may void your warranty of iPhone. Again, jailbreak it at your own risk.

Okay, that’s enough for the note. Let’s get started.

Upgrade your iPhone to OS 3.1.2

1. Download iPhone OS 3.1.2 firmware from here and save it into a folder.

2. Connect your iPhone via USB and launch iTunes.

Note: I suggest not to use the docking for the jailbreak. Connect the USB cable directly with your iPhone.

3. Restore your iPhone with iPhone OS 3.1.2. For Windows, hold SHIFT key and click on the “Restore” button and select the firmware file (i.e. iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw) you have just downloaded. For Mac, hold option key and click on the “Restore” button and select the firmware file (i.e. iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw) to restore.

jailbreak-312-step1

4. If you’re not using official sim, your iPhone will not be recognized by iTunes after restoration. Don’t worry. It’s normal. You can then close iTunes and continues with the next step.

Jailbreaking with blackra1n

5. Go to blackra1n.com and download blackra1n. Both Windows and Mac versions are available. So, you should download the correct version depending on your OS.

6. After downloading, unzip the blackra1n.zip.

7. Make sure your iPhone is still connected with your computer via USB. Launch blackra1n.

blackra1n-icon

8. Click “make it ra1n” to start the jailbreak.

blackra1n-make-it-ra1n

9. Once you click the button, the jailbreak process starts and it’ll take around 30 seconds to complete.

Blackra1n - Jailbreaking in Progress

10. Wait until you see the following message and your iPhone should be jailbroken after reboot.

blackra1n-complete

Great! Up to this point, your iPhone should have been activated and jailbroken.

Installing Cydia

Tip: Before proceeding, if you have WiFi connection, I suggest you to first enable it before continuing. This should speed up the download process of cydia.

11. Next, you’ll have to install Cydia. Tap on the “blackra1n” icon.

blackra1n-iphone

12. Tap on “Cydia” and then “Install” button to install Cydia. Just wait until the download and installation to complete.

Unlocking iPhone 2G with bootneuter

Okay, with cydia installed, the whole jailbreak process is complete. But if you need to unlock your iPhone 2G to work with unofficial sim, launch cydia and install bootneuter. After installation, reboot your iPhone and enjoy iPhone OS 3.1.2!

Note: If you want to uninstall blackra1n from iPhone home screen, launch blackra1n again and select “uninstall blackra1n”.

As always, remember to share your jailbreak experience by leaving comment below.

Update: You may encounter Wifi, GPS or YouTube issues after jailbreak. Please check out this guide to fix the problems.

If we jailbroke with old version of blackrain and 3.12 already, can we just run new ver of blackrain to jailbreak/unlock? Will this wipes out data??????????

Reply

6 Simon Ng November 6, 2009 at 1:21 am

@jogb, I guess you only need to unlock it using blacksn0w. You can download blacksn0w via cydia. If you can’t find it in cydia, remember to add the “http://blackra1n.com” as repository.

@ims, I suggest you to re-jailbreak again. But make sure you close iTunes and disable iPod services (you can’t kill it via task manager) before running blackra1n.

Hi Simon,

Followed the guide and all went well until bootneuter…
The bootneuter does not unlock phone for unofficial SIm carrier… Downloaded bootneuter through Cydia and rebooted device a number of times but to no avail… I noticed that bootneuter did say it was for 2.0 firmware but proceeded anyway on the basis of the guide.
To make matters worse, I downloaded BlacksnOw for the unlock and now my 2g phone is stuck in DFU mode… Apple startup is on display and that’s it…
Please advise how best to proceed? Am using an old Nokia at the moment and it ain’t good… haha
Help!!

Kind Regards

@RichE, what settings do you use for bootneuter? Make sure you select bootloader version 4.6, turn ON “neuter”, turn OFF “Fakeblank” and turn ON “unlock”. Try again and see if this works for you.

Simon, ur guide was very good, the complete jailbreak and unlock went very smooth… but the problem am facing is with bootneuter. Iam using 2G iPhone. As u suggested i did flash with settings bootloader version 4.6, turn ON “neuter”, turn OFF “Fakeblank” and turn ON “unlock”…. it did all the flash work.
But got stuck with the screen “Please wait.. Determining current settings…”
What should i do now? Please help me asap.
Thanks in advance.

about the unlocking problem with the 2g iphone.try this:this work for me 11/13/09 iphone 2g 3.1.2 jailbroken with blackra1n. after bootneuter i had to install afc2add from cydia so i could ssh into iphone, and diskaid trial for my computer to access the root menu through usb. next i went to the bottom menu root>private>var>root>library and made a copy of the lockdown folder to my desktop(just for safety reasons). next i removed the lockdown folder from device(some web sites keeped saying to replace it with another which you could download but that wasnt working for me so i just had to remove the lockdown folder from device and close disk aid). rebooted iphone and it work with my t-mobile sim. hope it helps

Hi guys,

I just updated my iPhone 3G to 3.1.2 and got it jailbroke and unlocked with Blackra1n and Blacksn0w respectively. Works great!!!. Thanks a million to GeoHot.

I am facing only one problem, since I have updated my iPhone to OS 3.x.x the volume in one of the earphone(left) is lesser that the other one. Its doesnt seem to be problem with ear phones bcos I checked it by covering the speakers one by one on iPhone and the problem still persists. Right speakers volume is more than left one. Please verify it carefully.

I have updated to OS 3.1.2 and the problem still persists.
Has anyone came across simillar problem ? any solution ?

Thanks

23 Ben January 5, 2010 at 5:32 am

I don’t think that is the update that done that. One speaker is used as a mic and the other as a speaker so one will always be louder than the other.

Hi Simon

I managed to get 3.1.2 fw version running on my 2G iphone. I followed the complete guide you provided. Once I upgraded using blackra1n, the first screen appeared after rebooting is Sim Locked, then I slide in and asking to unlock then i entered Sim Card pin number and Message said Pin Number Succeeded. I can make a call, sms, run apps etc without any prob. I went further to check the version and the baseband version. The version is correct 3.1.2(7D11) but the baseband version is 04.05.04_G. Is that expected, or should I get the newer version of the baseband which is 05.11 ?

Cheers!

Simon – Based on your procedure above you’ve indicated to unlock your 2G you need to download bootnueter from cydia and install it. Without me upgrading to 3.1.2 yet (i am currently using 3.0.1), I checked on the bootnueter version off cydia and what’s available out there is version 2.10, which is from the official Dev team unlocker for 2.0 firmware 2G phone. Is this the right bootnueter version from cydia to use after using blacra1n to upgrade my IPhone to 3.1.2?

Reply

31 fgabato November 8, 2009 at 4:36 pm

update: i decided to take the plunge and do it without waiting for Simon so I ended up using what was out there at cydia (yes using the Dev Team unlocker for 2.0 firmware of 2G phone) and i got myself a jailbroken / unlock 2G for version 3.1.2 – carrier T-Mobile, with a baseband version of 04.05.04_G and not 5.11

Reply

32 Simon Ng November 8, 2009 at 9:02 pm

@fgabato, for iPhone 2G, the baseband is still 04.05.04, even after OS 3.1.2 upgrade. That’s the reason why you can use bootneuter to unlock it.

hi simon, I had the same result as harisz, after following your excellent instructions, The version on the phone is 3.1.2(7D11) but the baseband version is 04.05.04_G not 5.11?? the jail break instructions worked a treat but when it came to download cydia, the phone tells me to check internet connection. Can you only download cydia using wifi or can you do it through a usb connection via laptop to your modem?? is the problem because of the modem version being 4.5.4. not 5.11.?? please help I am one step away from having a cool phone.

Simon,
Following your instructions, I’ve downloaded the file in this step:
1. Download iPhone OS 3.1.2 firmware from here and save it into a folder.

Then, I unzipped it. Near the end of the unzipping process I get a window with the following:

Confirm Encryption Lost
Do you want to copy this folder without encryption?
A problem is preventing this folder from being encrypted.
.fseventsd

Then, I get the window four more times for the following folders as well:
Firmware
all_flash
dfu
all_flash.m68ap.production

I’ve redownloaded the file and unzipped it several times. All with the same result.
When I try to restore in the next step, it takes me to the unzipped folder, I always get a message telling me:
No items match your search.

It seems that the file: iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw is not on my computer.

Any clue as to why this happens? Any suggestions? I would appreciate any advice you (or other readers) have. Thanks a lot!

Jeff

iPhone 2g runnning 3.1.2 – Modem firmware 4.5.4G unlock problems

From what i’m gathering you are the main answer guy on this site so THANK YOU! I’m having trouble unlocking my 2g iPhone which was purchased when the iPhone first came about. I updated to the 3.1.2 firmware and have tried the blackra1n to jailbreak (which worked) but the unlock with bootneuter stays at “determining current settings” for about 10 minutes then tells me that my iPhone needs an restore and to contact Apple. after that process my phone stays jailbroken, but still not unlocked. Any ideas on how i can unlock my phone. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks and have a good one.

Simon,

I found that intstalling both Cydia and Rick together from Blackra1n caused major system crashes. Would advsie to instrall Cydia and then add Rock later…

Despite numerous attempts to unlock my 2g on 3.1.2, bootneuter does not work. I received this advice from another blogger:
‘If you can find a mac, use pwnage tool to create a custom ipsw and neuter with pwnage tool and then since you are already jailbroken, just shift+restore(pc) or option+restore(mac) to your custom ipsw with iTunes. I had an issue with a 2g that bootneuter from cydia would not work for it and this is how I got it working.’

Problem is that i don’t have access to a Mac so please can you outline options open to me. Is there anyway of unlocking the phone via windows or is it possible to downgrade back to 3.1 and use the bootloader files. Please advise?

Ok, so I have an iPhone 2G that was running on 2.0.1 firmware. I decided to update to firmware 3.1.2 after browsing the web and seeing how easy people made it seem. I first downloaded the IPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw and went through iTunes to restore and completed all the steps (shift+restore then open ipsw file). Then I ran blackra1n after iTunes was finished and showed the usb connect to iTunes on the phone and ran and rebooted it through the blackra1n. Then intalled cydia and rock through blackra1n app on phone, then installed bootneuter. It updated perfectly, but as I started reading, the ipsw file I used was for an iPhone 3G. I didn’t think anything of it until I tried sending a text message. I can’t send text! I can recieve, but cant send. I also have trouble with sending e-mail and sending mms, it just wont send. So I tried the process all over again, this time with iPhone1,1_3.1.2_Restore.ipsw. I still cant send any messages. Can someone please please help me? Oh, and I’m using a t-mobile sim, I don’t have an at&t one.

having same issues as many above. 2G 3.1.2 jailbreak with blackra1n using itunes 9.0.1. Loaded Cydia and rock. Bootneuter finally allowed me to change settings as described. my phone also locked in the update settings mode of bootneuter but i did a hard reboot and now bootneuter shows proper settings. i changed to a new tmobile sim card and iphone asks to connect to itunes and only allows emrgency calls but shows the tmobile carrier at upper left. when i return the at&t(sorry to even mention at&t) sim card all works but obviously not on tmobile carrier…. what am i missing??

I have an iPhone 2G and have been curious but nervous to jailbreak since I bought my phone Mar 2008. I read about the latest version being available, so I decided to go ahead and jailbreak yesterday. I am telling you that it was EASY! I was afraid of not being able to still use my downloaded apps that I’ve paid for, texts, notes, contacts, etc. Just make sure to do a backup on itunes prior to jailbreaking as it states to do, just in case. I was so excited that it worked! I was up all night going through Cydia changing themes/colors/icons, etc. It is SO fun and worth downloading. I don’t know why I didn’t do this a year ago! Take a chance, follow the instructions, and enjoy! THANK YOU for having this jailbreak for iPhone 2G!

Oh and all of my apps, notes, texts, contacts were all still on my phone! It looks the same as before jailbreaking, just added app for blackra1n on the last screen. Click on that and download Cydia, then you’re good to go!

I found a solution. I did everything with the 2g 3.1.2 firmware to unlock it but the bootneuter didnt work. SO:

Plug into computer and do a DFU restore (refer to google on how)

In itunes w/ phone connected hit SHIFT (KEY ON KEYBOARD) + RESTORE, and select the 3.0 .ispw (FIND it on google somewhere)

Then run REDSNOW 0.7.2 for WIN or MAC

Continue as instructed. Make sure you hit CYDIA and UNLOCK, not ICY.

Once redsnow is done. After reboot. I just put in a TMOBILE sim card and i got service no problems, works perfectly!!!!!!!!!!

rick, when i started and did bootneuter, i had service but was stuck in that screen with the ask to connect to itunes and only allowing emergency calls but this worked for me.

Hey cris, i am not sure what firmware the phone was before. but i know it was never jailbroken or unlocked and had the latest 3.1.2 update. So whatever the stock firmware would have been was what it was.

@cris, what settings did you use in bootneuter? blacksn0w will not work for iPhone 2G but for iPhone 3G/3GS only.

Hi Chris,

Will test your method tonight. Bootneuter does not work on my 2g…
UK users can now offically get thier phone unlocked from O2 for £15. see link. Will go for that me thinks so that there are no future issues.

uugh this is driving me mental!!! lol

ive spent maybe 7 days now trying to get my misus sim to work in the 2g iphone that for some reason stopped recognizing her sim card. i have tried everything from ziphone to kiphone (for baseband downgrade) to blackra1n to bootneuter!!! with no luck….at the moment i am on jailbroken fw 3.1 (via pwnage tool custom ipsw) and the baseband annoyingly is still at 04.05.04_G and bootneuter doesnt work as suggested (tried both installing through cydia/neutering directly via custom ipsw during jailbreak)….i am at this point open to suggestion if any one has any ideas?

NB: i came across some information that mentioned the bootneuter unlock only works if you had neutered the phone prior to fw upgrade previously…….i cant remember if i did this for my misus……have done various unlocks/jailbreaks in past without much problem…..still bright side is i have an ipod touch now….. ;(

Just one point missing form the (brilliant) instructions. How, and at which point, do you restore your apps store apps/contacts etc? Thanks. Mike

79 Simon Ng November 12, 2009 at 7:51 pm

@Mike,

Actually, you can sync your iPhone data with iTunes after completing step 10. But if you need to unlock your iPhone, I suggest you to complete the whole process before restoring your iPhone data (e.g. contacts, sms, etc)

Hi Simon.

Your instruction were very clear, simple and concise. Followed them and it worked great. Thanks. Just one question though, my iPhone 2G was already unlocked after step 10, without having to download Bootneuter from Cydia. Why is that?? Thanks

Reply

81 Simon Ng November 13, 2009 at 9:36 am

@Tom John,

Did you jailbreak and unlock your iPhone before? From my test, if the iPhone 2G has been unlocked, it’ll be kept unlocked even after blackra1n jailbreak. That’s probably why your iPhone is unlocked after step 10. So, you can skip the bootnueter unlock procedures.

@mynk,

Some browsers may mis-recognize the .ipsw file and save it as .zip file. You may look into the folder you save the firmware file and rename the .zip file to .ipsw. Or you can use Firefox to download the .ipsw file again.

simon, i tried chris’s methods above but still unable to have my 2G 3.1.2 respond to the tmobile sim card. i blackra1n and bootneuter with the att sim card installed, and the 2G is unlocked per opening bootneuter again and seeing all settings exactly as the screenshot. however, when i change the sim card to tmobile i still get the emergency phone only. i lose visual voice mail so i know the tmobile sim card is recognized but it is unusable and i cannot open it to find apps. when i put the att back in everything works i just have to reset password for visual voice mail.

91 mklovn November 16, 2009 at 1:28 pm

afc2add is just a program that lets u ssh into iphone,(i dont happen to know what ssh means) and its not really an app u can open. but once installed u have to open diskaid with ur iphone connected to computer and u should see the menus of ur iphone. look through the folders root>private>var>root>library and find the lockdown folder click once on it and then click on the delete from device tab. reboot and it should work. ive tried it on 2 2g iphones with 3.1.2. let me know if u need further details.

Hi Sam,

My 2g iphone is on 3.1.2 firmware and baseband 04.05.04_G…
I had the same problem with bootneuter, not unlocking for unofficial carrier so went back temporarily to 3.0 but on seeing Mklovn’s post last night, decided to have one more attempt and it worked a treat..
Just Install Openshh from Cydia and you need open source on your PC. I use winscp (windows secure copy). With this you should be able to shh into the iphone and delete the Lockdown folder. Save a copy to somewhere, just in case.
Once done reboot phone and check unofficial sim, you can then restore backup from itunes and hey presto.
The process is so simple…
Respect to Mklovn here for his perseverance in finding a solution for the issue and letting us all know about it… That old Nokia is back in the drawer.

Cheers Fella

Thanks for the help and hats off for this simple process.

I went through the steps and successfully upgraded my 2G (with 3.0 already jailbroken and unlocked) to 3.1.2 using blackrain. I didn’t encounter any problems and it hardly took 2-3 mins.

One small tip to bloggers: If your iphone (2G) is already unlocked, then you don’t have to continue after step 10.

let me clarify that you upgraded your 2G ,3.0 OS that already jailebraked and unlocked that you use it with other sim cards such Tmoble just by upgrading to 3.1.2 through blackra1n file that is listed above :

Upgrade your iPhone to OS 3.1.2
1. Download iPhone OS 3.1.2 firmware from here ( iphone1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.zIP )

I have also tried the method of the removing the lockdown folder, that made it worst and it said my phone was locked. Thanksfully i had a back up so i restored it and i can now get access to the phone again. I dont know if there is an issue with this, but the phone was originally on a french Orange contract.

I now have: ‘Searching…’ at the top left corner when i put my 3 sim card.

Details: iphone 8g with a silver back
Version: 3.1.2 (7D11)
Carrier: Orange France 5.0
Model: MB346F
Network: Not available

3 network is the only carrier of the british networks that is not compatible with any of the unlock procedures, When I originally bought mine (already jailbroken and unlocked) I was told that 3 network would not work with the iphone under any circumstances, this was 2 years ago) as far as im aware this is still the case. Your only option is to switch to another network if you wish to continue using your iphone. (you may want to research this before taking my word for it as things may have changed with all the latest unlocking tools but as im on vodafone I have no reason to keep abreast of the situation).

I downloaded a 3.0 firmware from http://659ef965.thesefiles.com (be careful and choose a right one, you need 3.0/7A341) when you download it to your computer it should be a *.ispw file. Connect your ipod and start itunes. Very careful now. PRESS and HOLD SHIFT button and click restore button on iTunes, window will pop up asking what file u want to open, point it to the firmware file you downloaded. your iphone will restore to 3.0 firmware and then you can watch a video and unlock your Iphone 2g.

I would say just run 3.1.2 update from itunes. Iphone should stay unlocked but not jailbroken. So you would have to run blackrain on it after update. Follow up all the steps for blackrain but dont run boot neuter. If it doesn’t work You can always downgrade to 3.0 firmware:)

132 Simon Ng November 22, 2009 at 10:47 am

@kalmychkov, thanks for your suggestion and support!

@Michael,

From my experience, if you have unlocked iPhone 2G, you can just use blackra1n to jailbreak it. You won’t lose the unlock after blackra1n jailbreak. No need to use bootneuter after that. Tom John (see above comment) shared the same experience as mine.

I was so not feeling good about this updating thing until i saw post 118 ….
thank you very much, I got it up and running again. mine is 2g and i accidently updated it to 3.1.2 and then tried to jailbreak and then unlock via bootneuter. However, I had to downgrade to 3.0, then i used redsnow and voilaaaaaaaaaa…………..its alive again!!!! thougth i thought there still is some problem because it took longer than usual to sync with itunes, but it was just a time delay thats all, i got it synced, i have all my info back and it works on my local carrier perfectly well……… wifi, edge all restored……….thanks again kalmychkov, u r a saviour :) ))
if there’s anything on 3.1.2 to be used with 4.5.4, pls post, i have 4.5.4 and thats what busted the earlier options of having 3.1.2 and bootneuter…….
cheers

no problem. I glad this post helped you out. I was in the same situation with 3.1.2 update. I restored my ipod and used a blackra1n over and over again and still wouldn’t unlock. Phone was jailbroken not not unlocked. Which was the whole point of buying iphone is it to use with tmobile. Nobody knew how to help me. I spent so much time with that thing but I noticed after reading reviews about unlocking 3.0 firmware that nobody had problems with that. So there you go:) I also saw people say you can update it to 3.1.2 again and it will stay unlocked. Jailbreak will go away but the phone will be unlocked. In the worst case you already know how to downgrade it to 3.0 version:)

Thanks Kalmychko
can you apply the same for 3GS phone( downgrading to 3.0 unlock then upgrading to 3.1.2) or this only work for 2G phone?
what are the best advantages of 3.1.2 over 3.0 ?

you should use different steps when unlocking your iphone 3gs:
http://www.simonblog.com/2009/11/06/complete-guide-jailbreak-and-unlock-iphone-3g3gs-3-1-2-using-blackra1n-blacksn0w/
or go to you tube and search for iphone 3gs unlock with 3.0 firmware. iphone 2g and 3gs usually have diff. steps while unlocking it. Read link above how to unlock it with 3.1.2 firmware. You shouldn’t have any problems. Be aware this unlock tool ONLY available to unlock iPhone with baseband 05.11.07. Good luck

I have had several problems jailbreaking 3.1.2 on iphone 2g but I finally got it resolved and I hope this helps others.

Initially, using blackra1n my iphone would not reboot and I didn’t get the blackra1n logo. All I was getting was a blank screen. For all of you having this problem, it may be due to two things. The first computer I was using didn’t have USB 2.0 so that may be one issue and it was also running on Windows XP. The second computer I used on which it DID WORK had USB 2.0 and was running on Vista.

Also for MMS on iphone 2g 3.1.2, I installed nativeMMS and rebooted my ipihone. This puts a little camera in the message window when you text. I didn’t have cellular data network option under network settings so I didn’t have to tweak anything and it worked. I was previously using an APN disabler app because I don’t have a data plan and I didn’t want to get raped with data fees. I had to remove this app before the MMS worked.

I am an iphone 2G user. I previously had 2.2.1 firmware, after which i upgraded to 3.0, which i regret to this day because my wifi never worked after that. I tried downgrading it to 2.2.1 but now I am left with an ‘ibrick’ in recovery mode. I cannot restore it to any firmware, neither 2.2.1 nor 3.0. All I face with is the invincible ERROR 20 or ERROR 13, I’ve tried restoring on a dozen different computers but in vain.
Now I’ve decided to upgrade to 3.1.2 hoping that it would fix my wifi issue. What if the wifi still doesn’ work? What if i am not able to unlock? Is there any other way to unlock besides using wifi, like how quickpwn used to do it?
I’d be so so so grateful if someone helps me out, I feel like banging my head against this brick? Why does lord Steve Jobs has to make us go through all this helluva sh*t…

I am breaking a 2G for someone else who accepted The Jobs’s 3.1.2 update before consulting the jailbreaker (me). This phone was originally quickpwned, and had modem firmware 04.05.04_G. It took 3 cycles, but it looks like blackra1n worked. George Hotz is the man!

Hey, I’ve tried updating the software to the 3.1.2 version from iTunes but that didn’t work so I tried it the way it’s written above and a dialog comes up saying that the firmware isn’t compatible…how do I fix that?

Thanks in advance :)

@RichE, what settings do you use for bootneuter? Make sure you select bootloader version 4.6, turn ON “neuter”, turn OFF “Fakeblank” and turn ON “unlock”. Try again and see if this works for you.

But got stuck with the screen “Please wait.. Determining current settings…”
What should i do now? Please help me asap.

I tried to reset internet several times but without success. any advice to solve
this problem.

@Michael, you need to configure the EDGE setting to connect to the Internet. Go to Settings -> General -> Network -> Cellular Data Network and fill in the APN value. If you do not know the APN value, you can check with T-mobile customer service.

Blackrain did not work for me.
My problem is that when I send a text message the reply is returned on a new screen.
It had previously ben returned to the screen that sent the message.
Can this problem be corrected.
Has anyone else been tormented by this problem.

I just upgraded my 2g phone using these instructions and everything is cool accept Cydia. When I select the icon it tries to launch but jumps back out. I used blackrain to reinstall but it continues to do the same. I had to install Rock to install some apps, but I really need SwirlyMMS which seems to be only available from Cydia. Has anyone had this problem if so PLEASE share your resolution. Thanks.

I did all and it seems to work in terms of the steps. After flashing with BN on both versions 39 and 46 it goes back to the screen that says “determining settings” or something like that and stays there forever. I put in a Tmobile simcard and it only allows emergency calls. i did try many different ways, with itunes, without itunes, with wifi, without wifi i mean all combinations… it’s not working and i need this for the month of december :( (

any thoughts? thanks.

Hi.

@kalmychkov and anyone else

I am on Windows with a 2g

3.1.2(7d11) firmware
04.05.04_G baseband.
T-mobile USA
2g iphone has never been unlocked.

I did the whole blackra1n and boot neuter and only jailbroken no unlock happened.

I am following post 120 to download
the 3.0 .ipsw restore file firmware from http://659ef965.thesefiles.com.

So I can restore to 3.0 and jailbreak/unlock using redsnow technique for unlock
(and then maybe upgrade back to 3.1.2 and rejailbreak using blackra1n)

HERE IS THE PROBLEM/ISSUE:

I try the shift+restore on itunes
(I already changed .zip to .ipsw)
I keep getting the following message
“The iphone … could not be restored because the firmware is not compatible”

I am wondering if maybe the download file (3.0 7A341) is ok?
Maybe I should try to restore to 3.0 in DFU mode(gonna go and give this a shot)?

I CAN’T RESTORE TO 3.0!

FUNNY STUPID ME SIDE NOTES:

I jailbroke before w/ blackra1n and was getting same message
“The iphone … could not be restored because the firmware is not compatible”
So I did a normal restore with itunes ( I am t-mobile USA)
got the following message ( took a shit thinking I had locked myself out of iphone)
“no sim card installed insert a valid sim with no pin lock to activate iphone”

But i got through that by rejailbreaking with blackra1n.
So I need to restore to 3.0 and do the redsnow(ultrasnow?) thing to unlock.

In summary I have a 3.1.2 jailbroken(blackrain) 2 gen iphone that has never been unlocked.
I am trying to restore back to 3.0 through itunes shift+restore.
The 3.0 firmware .ipsw file is not being accepted (I am not in DFU mode).
So i can’t run the redsnow technique.

thanks for any help

its the first iphone I try to jb/unlock….
I am really happy that blackra1n brought it back from what I thought was a possible lockout =) =)

thanks again

-Danny

Ok I tried to restore to 3.0 firmware by shift+restore through itunes in DFU mode.

Didn’t work =0 ….which I think is really weird

Now I am pretty stumped….

thanks for any suggestions…

I think i was installing the wrong firmaware since
from http://www.hackint0sh.org/f201/68380.htm

“You are probably using the wrong ipsw, check the filname and make sure it matches
iPhone1,1 is for iPhone 2G (original iPhone)
iPhone1,2 for the iPhone 3G ”

I was using 1,2 not 1,1….

gonna give that a try for the restore…

Reply

184 Ugur Arcan December 7, 2009 at 9:21 am

i dont get the 1,1 and 1,2 thing… there is only 1 3.0 option and that also tells me not compatible.

Ok so I am unlocked and jailbroken on 3.0…. =)

like most people lol….

now …if I update to 3.1.2 and jb w/ blackra1nb

will i lose my unlock ? will my baseband be changed ( i think that might cause unlock to change)?

SHOULD I TAKE THE 3.1.2 DIVE?

thanks again

Reply

188 Danny December 7, 2009 at 8:20 am

OK I TOOk THE DIVE AND IT wORKED!!!!

=) =) =) =)

couple of things I found on this site
http://www.redmondpie.com/jailbreak-unlock-iphone-2g-3.1.2-firmware-with-blackra1n-rc3-9140086/

that helped …look for post by Maddy done on 12/05/09

1)You shouldn’t have SIM card in phone …might make a difference might not
2)Before installing Boot Neuter turn autolock to never
3) if your wi-fi isn’t highlighted (you can’t activate it!) go to
General>Settings>Reset and “Rreset Network Settings”. Then retsart wi-fi button should become active.

Yeah that is pretty much it.

I AM JB/Unlocked on 2g with firmware 3.1.2 and baseband 04.05.04_g!!!!!!

Questions whats the differnce between 3.0 and 3.1.2?

I don’t see the MMS features…I probably have to contact T-mobile for the values…

well its been great hope that helps someone…

THANKS to everyone (especially kalmychkov and Simon)

I was at 3.1.2 when I bought the phone yesterday…I used iTunes regular update to get to 3.1.2 after doing the restore to 3.0 from post 120.

I used boot neuter but I should have tried without boot to verify that the unlock says in place maybe you don’t have to use it?

I followed the 3 tips mentioned in my previous post that maddy did in the Redmond pie forum

So I did run boot neuter again
and I just updated using iTunes not a custom firmware (which idon’t exactly know what that is lol…guess it’s when youtweek thecode)

I would say restore to 3.0 and unlock/jb with redsn0w.

Then run the process described here.

That worked on 2g

Maybe pay attention to the 3 tips i mentioned in some of my post above…

Could you check if it’s unlocked without boot neuter after doing the 3.0 restore, redsn0w, 3.1.2 update iTunes and blackra1n

THat worked for my 2g!

regarding 2g iphone that cant be unlocked after using bootnueter (same procedure as before but written better)
1- install afc2add from Cydia.
2- Reboot iPhone
3- Download and run DiskAid on your computer: http://www.digidna.net/diskaid/download.php
4- In DiskAid, click on the bottom left and select “root”. Then on the folders go to: private –> var –> root –> library. There you will find a folder named “Lockdown”. Copy this folder to your computer to back it up in case things don’t work out.
5- Then click on “Delete from device”.
6- Restart your iPhone.
hope that helps.

But maybe you get some glitches with 3.1.2?

Either way we are on T-mobile USA.

There data support customer service reps are THE BEST!.

One of them said that for a 2g iphone updating to 3.1.2 isn’t that great.

@jay, use firmware 3.1.2. The term “Firmware” and “iPhone OS” refer to the same thing.

I have a 2G that I upgraded to 3.1.2 just to experiment with. I want to unlock it so I can use my GoPhone sim and have installed bootneuter. Like others, it freezes up on determining settings so I reboot the phone. Then it tells me that me settings already match so there is nothing to do. My phone remains locked and I can’t ever get bootneuter to do anything no matter how many times I reboot.

I’ve been stuck either using 3.0 or 2.2.1 because those are the versions that I can actually unlock. Yes I’ve read the thread.

I should add that I’ve also used the custom firmware but then push notifications don’t work.

Fixed! I deleted the lockdown folder in my phone as mentioned above!

Hello.
I’ve just cracked my iPhone 2G with blackra1n to version 3.1.2, and am about to install bootneuter.
The process is fast and smooth, no problems at all. :)
However, I have a question. If I want to sync all my music, photos, contacts, etc. again, which option do I click in iTunes?

*Set up as new iPhone.
or
*Restore from the backup of: iPhone

Thanks!

Tommo to Kalmychkov
I used the info you provided in your letter of 21 November 2009 to unlock my 1st generation iphone, and I can’t thank you sufficiently for your help. You’re an absolute star.
My iphone is first generation which I misguidely upgraded from 1.1.4 to 3.1.2 then on your advice downgraded to 3.0
I had to resolve a problem after unlocking with the “Notes” facility which I corrected by deleting some files but my “Bluetooth” facility still refuses to work.
The “Bluetooth” address displays in the “Settings / About section.
The “Bluetooth” icon appears at the top of the screen.
The devise to be paired is displayed on the iphone screen but the iphone refuses to connect fully.
The small rortating search wheel keeps spinning endlessly without achieving
contact.
I’ve tried numerous recommended ideas from various blog/info sites in a attempt to resolve the problem without success.
Is my only alternative downgrading back to 1.1.4 and downgrading iTunes from 9.0 to 7.2 with an enormous loss of specification?
You are my last hope.
Have you had experience of this problem before?
Your advice would be appreciated.

I don’t know how to help you on this one. Mine is working just fine. Sorry, I wish I can help you more. Maybe try to restore with custom 3.1.2 firmware? It will unlock your phone without even doing anything:

http://www.iphoneheat.com/2009/10/download-iphone-os-3-1-2-custom-firmware-ipsw-files-for-iphone-3gs-3g-2g/
I had a really weird problem with my iPhone after unlocking, I had to restore it to factory defaults and unlock it again. Try custom firmware above and don’t forget to backup ur phone!!! Good luck

Thanks Simon for posting this guide. I would like to add that…..i was previously on iphone2g version 2.0 and updated it to version 3.1.2 using your guide. But i did not go through the last step i.e. bootneuter thing. What i did was removed my unofficial sim card from phone and then used your guide from step one to clicking on make it rain. once the message came up that phone has been jailbreak and it rebooted i inserted the unofficial sim card and it worked like a charm. i had no issues with wifi but only with youtube. fixed youtube with installing push fix from cydia.

I tried your solution but was initially unsuccessful.
I tried your idea again but this time I decided to turn my “Firewall” off during the download period and unbelievably the Bluetooth finally made connection.
My P.C. operating system is Windows Vista and my Firewall is Norton 360
I know you’ll understand how good it makes me feel to have resolved the problem but I could not have accomplished the connection without your incredible expertise and support.
Thanks again for your assistance and have a great Xmas and New Year.
I intend to now my phone is fully operational.

I had exactly the same problem. I was on 3.0 firmware though, I had no signal no no operators to choose from. You have to restore your iPhone trough iTunes and then unlock and jailbreak it again. Put in in DFU mode and then restore to factory condition, after that use custom firmware. That will jailbreak and unlock your phone automatically with 3.1.2 firmware. That worked for me and I got signal back. Make Sure to turn off firewall!!! Good luck

any suggestions? thanks so much!!!

Ur phone stuck in recovery mode. You need to restore it with iTunes.
DFU mode/restore is the only way.
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1. Turn off iPhone

Step 2. Hold down the power and home button.

Step 3. When you see the Apple logo, release the power button but continue holding the home button down.

Step 4. Open iTunes and wait for it to tell you that it’s in restore mode.

How to Install Custom Firmware:

1. Download the custom firmware (IPSW) (all parts) for your device from links above.
2. Join the splitted custom IPSW file by unpacking them:
3. Put iPhone in recovery mode. (Step 1. Turn off iPhone

Step 2. Hold down the power and home button.

Step 3. When you see the Apple logo, release the power button but continue holding the home button down.

Step 4. Open iTunes and wait for it to tell you that it’s in restore mode)

4. Press the Shift button for Windows or ALT for Mac and click restore and used the custom ipsw.
5. It will start restoring your iPhone which may take 10mins and will jailbreak iPhone. (iPhone 2G users are done here >Jailbreak+Unlock<. enjoy OS 3.1.2.)

ok..here is what I did and I think it worked …for now anyware, who knows if something else will or will not work..(and a new issue already has arisen “what about my circle? will just calling the “circle” of contacts be the same billing wize as a phone that calles them a “circle”?.. but I digress :)

This worked for me (MAC):

1) Get Blackrai1n on your computer (it is Jailbraking software and it allows you get the software to unlock) plug your phone in to your computer, open Blackra1n..it will access your phone using itunes..it will do it’s thing… NOW REBOOT YOUR PHONE

2) Get Cydia from Blackra1n on your phone (it is the open door to bring in the software to unlock) I had to reconnect to my wirerlss to download Cydia (not automatically on as usual)
Cydia had lots of issues ( this error or that) but I just plowed through as though all went well with the download and went to search when it let me and found Bootneuter downloaded it

3) Get Bootneuter from Cydia NOW REBOOT YOUR PHONE go back to Bootneuter click the right things ( it will check your settings, then Neuter “on” and Unlock “on” leave FakeBlank “off”) hit flash in the upper right leave it alone..let it do it’s thing and NOW REBOOT YOUR PHONE

4) I followed these instructions next:
Workout to get rid of different problems:

http://www.iphoneheat.com/2009/11/how-to-jailbreak-iphone-unlock-iphone-2g-os-3-1-2-using-blackra1n-rc3/

I have Signals but Different sim card detected, connect to iTunes Problem

Run Black Ra1n, After bootneuter

install afc2add from Cydia.
Reboot iPhone
Download and run DiskAid on your computer: http://www.digidna.net/diskaid/download.php
In DiskAid, click on the bottom left and select “root”. Then on the folders go to: private –> var –> root –> library. There you will find a folder named “Lockdown”. Copy this folder to your computer to back it up in case things don’t work out.
Then click on “Delete from device”.
NOW RESTART YOUR PHONE.
I’m sure I did this the hard way it took me 9 hours in all…But the phone works… :) Hope it helps you too.

Hi Simon. Thanks for the instructions, I finally got around to updating my 2G iPhone running 1.14 to 3.12. I had been hesitant to upgrade because my ziphone unlocked 1.14 was rock solid, but the lack of appstore finally convinced me to make the move.

The upgrade went very smoothly. I too (like others) had an issue where bootneuter was displaying “Please wait.. Determining current settings…” after successfully patching the baseband, but simply resetting the phone fixed this.

The only issue I have had (but big enough to convince me to go back to 1.14 if this is possible) is that my EDGE is working but more slowly than before and not reliably. I used to get EDGE coverage but now it seems to be mostly stuck at GPRS speed (circular icon rather than “E”). Also, often apps can’t connect to the Internet over EDGE and I’m forced to reset it by turning EDGE off and then back on in Bossprefs. This is a workaround, but it is rather annoying and I’m frustrated about the drop in EDGE speed (because of it falling back to GPRS). Has anyone else had this issue?

- I’d like to try a pwnagetool created custom .ipsw now but does anyone know whether this will work now that I have already performed the 3.12 upgrade via the standard Apple upgrade + Blackra1n?

- Is it possible to _downgrade_ from 3.14 + blackra1n to 1.14 + ziphone? I’m assuming that the baseband will also need downgrading?

Cheers,
Dom.

I have the IPhone 2G unlocked and jailbraked version 3.0.1. I remember spending like 2 hours following carefully all these difficult steps on those times.
Now it worked like a charm, it was quite simple, it took me like half hour :) .
Now also backing up all the content with ITunes is rather simple.
As mentioned in post 79, when it is already unlocked you can skip the last step, no need to unlock it again with bootneuter.
Thank you very much for your clear and concise post.
Greetings from Amsterdam.

Amazing.
I have iPhone 2g…. It was previously jailbroken AND unlocked. I wanted to upgrade to software version 3.1.2 BUT I had read so many people were having problems. So I waited until now to bite the bullet.

I followed your instructions EXACTLY to the tee. I suspect some people are having problems because they aren’t restoring by holding the SHIFT key and then clicking on RESTORE in the iTunes application. I suspect if you just click UPGRADE (to software version 3.1.2) in iTunes instead of using the method you describe, Simon – then it may cause problems? Also, it’s important to CLOSE iTunes at the end of STEP 4!

Anyway, after following your instructions to the tee – my iPhone rebooted. I was then going to check and see if iTunes recognised my SIM card before messing with the bootneuter. So, I loaded iTunes and lo and behold it already recognised my SIM card:)!

BUT iTunes was giving me TWO OPTIONS before I could do anything to my phone IN iTunes:
1) configure (can’t remember the exact wording) the phone as a NEW phone
or
2) restore using Lisa backup data.

I wasn’t sure what to do – but figured if I screwed it up at this point. I’d just start over again.
Anyway, I selected option 2 to restore using my backup data. To my delight it is currently (as i type this) installing all my previous apps, and music.

The only downside to all this is I seem to have lost all my contacts (grr) (I checked before loading up iTunes again). Having said that, I’m hoping since it’s restoring all my apps, that maybe it saved my Contacts and is restoring that too. I’ll update when it’s done to let you know.

So for ANYONE who is trying to do this on a phone that was PREVIOUSLY jailbroken and unlocked? Don’t bother with the bootneuter until you try all the others steps first – including what I’ve just shared.

Thanks for the clear instructions Simon. I hope you might update solutions for the variables people are reporting.

Reply

277 Lisa January 5, 2010 at 11:48 pm

Okay, it seemed to get totally stuck – not responding at all when trying to synch and install all my backed up apps.

I’m not going through the whole process again. I’m wondering if when it’s jailbroken, and I’ve enabled wifi – and then installed Cydia – then load iTunes – if I need to just set it as a new phone rather than let it restore to my back up. I wish this were clear in the instructions – because when I got to the end of the instructions and loaded iTunes – it gives me those TWO options w/in iTunes. Does taking the restore to backup route mess up the phone? I thought this was simply accessing backup contacts, etc and nothing to do with the firmware upgrade. (incidentally, I could see the firmware was upgraded in iTunes window….so it is recognising the upgrade and it didn’t reject my SIM card).

sigh…

278 Lisa January 5, 2010 at 11:50 pm

I’m NOW going through the whole process again (sorry for the typo!)

Reply

279 Lisa January 6, 2010 at 12:43 am

Completed the instructions again. Now it’s working. I don’t know what went wrong before.
But this time, instead of selecting RESTORE when iTunes gave me the two options (the other was to set up as a new phone) I chose to set up as a new phone.

What’s bugging the crap outta me is that I’ve lost ALL my contacts except the few (not important ones, sadly!) that were somehow on my SIM card. Sigh.

BECAUSE I backed up my iPhone before Jailbreaking it – I’m wondering where to locate the backup AND if it has a copy of my old contacts in there?

Thanks so much Simon. the instructions do work — but just a few niggles getting there. Oh..and installing Push Fix helps (new source is needed though….the old source doesn’t work. new source is http://apt.macosmovil.com or http://sinfuliphonerepo.com for those who might be looking for it.

If someone knows how to somehow retrieve old backup contacts from the backup in iTunes- please please share. I’ve googled and am finding nothing.

I figured out how to retrieve my contacts after jailbreaking. It took my a few hours, but I did it.

Because I’d jailbroken my iPhone before, I wasn’t worried about the contacts…….they remained in tact last time. HOWEVER, that was a BIG mistake this time.

If anyone is here to jailbreak – back up your contacts BEFORE you jailbreak. If they aren’t there after jailbreaking – then you CAN recover them.

I synced BEFORE jailbreaking, which created a backup of my contacts.
*After* jailbreaking – I loaded iTunes. It gave me two options – configure as a new phone, or restore from old backup. Initially, I tried the *restore* option, but it crashed and I had to jailbreak all over again. The next time, I chose to set up as a new phone. This wiped my contacts, but it ALSO left my old backup file alone. In future, I will MOVE MY OLD BACKUP FILE BEFORE JAILBREAKING:).

PHEW!

If you synced before this jailbreak AND you let iTunes configure as a NEW phone you will have likely wiped your contacts…but you may also still have your OLD backup file…so this is worth a try.

To retrieve & restore(!) contacts: (CLOSE iTunes BEFORE DOING THIS!!)

1) Simply Locate your iPhone backup files. (usually in the AppData\Roaming\AppleComputer\MobileSyc\Backup (I had two folders in there luckily! one old, one new)

2) Download & install iPhone Backup Extractor (http://www.reincubate.com/labs/iphone-backup-extractor-how-extract-files-iphone-backup-windows/#/res/i/labs/iphonebe/3_wizard.png) There is a link for 32bit & 64bit – so choose the one you need.

3) Run iPhone Backup Extractor (it’s a wizard form). Restore the file “Library/AddressBook/AddressBook.sqllitedb”. (This is a SQL Lite database file with all of your contacts.) by choosing from the drop down list (or locate via ‘browse’ option). I had two files listed – and I chose the OLDEST file.
so you would SELECT FILE TO RESTORE (drop down menu)>click NEXT>(Unregistered, you can only extract one file at a time). Click RESTORE SOME OR ALL FILES MANUALLY click NEXT>Click on + next to LIBRARY>Click on + next to AddressBook and tick the box next to “AddressBook.sqllitedb”. Untick ALL other boxes, because you can only extract ONE file w/ the uregistered program.
>Click NEXT>SELECT a DESTINATION FOLDER TO PLACE THIS FILE (I put it on my desktop so I could locate it easily). Click Next – wait a sec and you’re done! (click finish to close program).

Now you’ve got a file called AddressBook.sqllitedb
This is where all the contact data will be retrieved from.

4) I added SQLiteManager (addon for Firefox) to my browser. Rebooted my browser. Then opened SQLiteManager from within my browser by clicking Tools>SQLiteManager (it opens into a new window). (just minimise Firefox)

5) From within SQLiteManager open the restored file (AddressBook.sqllitedb) from where ever you saved it.

6) Choose the “Execute SQL” tab

7) paste the following into the “SQL string” field:

select ABPerson.first,ABPerson.last,ABPerson.organization,ABMultiValue.value from ABPerson,ABMultiValue where ABMultiValue.record_id=ABPerson.ROWID

8) Click the “Execute Query” button, and then you will see your full contact list shown in the “Data returned” field.

9) If you use SQLiteManager THROUGH Firefox as an addon, you will be able to copyasCSV (like for Word Excel). I tried this first through the SQLite DB and it would NOT ALLOW me to COPY! So, go for the SQLiteManager via Firefox if you don’t want to have to type every freakin entry into another program. (I copied line by line into Word Excel and now have a CSV backup).

But wait. I didn’t stop there. I knew there must be a way to RESTORE the contacts BACK to my iPhone (newly jailbroken)…and I found it.

Download DiskAid http://www.digidna.net/downloads/DiskAid_1_5.exe
- above is a link for a FREEWARE version (if you want the latest version – you’ll have to pay for it).
Install DiskAid. NB: Everytime you run DiskAid, it will ask you if you want to update to the latest version – just click ‘Cancel’ and the program will open.

1) Open DiskAid – click cancel when it asks to update. Then the program will open.

2) On the bottom left corner CLICK on the drop down menu and select ROOT. Click okay on the scary warning.

3) In the LEFT PANE, Click on the “+” next to PRIVATE, + VAR, + MOBILE, + LIBRARY
Under LIBRARY you will see ADDRESS BOOK. Click once on ADDRESS BOOK (on the left pane!) to access it.

4) In the RIGHT PANE, click on AddressBook.sqllitedb to highlight. This is the file you are about to switch with your old backup!

*****BEWARE: this will NOW restore the file you retrieved earlier to your iPhone! So be SURE you are restoring a file you want! *******

5) Click on COPY FILE TO DEVICE (at the top – 2nd icon from the left)
It will ask you WHICH file (locate the retrieved file wherever you stored it!)

6) This will replace the file on your iPhone with the restored file you selected.

Once I completed these steps, my iPhone automatically rebooted. After my iPhone rebooted, I saw all my contacts restored. I then loaded iTunes and synced it and now my new backup contains my contacts. I have retained a copy of my AddressBook.sqllitedb file, in case I run into any problems in the future.

I hope this helps someone else. It took me hours, but I finally did it. Thanks Simon for such a great blog!!! And i hope you don’t mind my posting this solution here.

Worked like a charm! Thanks a bunch! Backing up the files was really easy through iTunes. Save for the music, all the contacts and photos were there when I restored it after jailbreaking. I’ve an unofficial sim and didn’t need to do the last step, maybe it does have something to do with having had my iPhone jailbroken before.

THANKS AGAIN!! :)

My phone was already unlocked at 3.0, so as others had stated, I didn’t need to go past step 10. Easiest upgrade I’ve done. Worked like a charm, however I did lose all my apps I had on my phone, but I believe that’s my fault for not backing them up to my desktop. Thanks.

I have just been spending 6 hours trying to unlock an iPhone 2G, but hadn’t worked. Until I used a restore which I had downloaded (firmware 3.1.2), and using the SHIFT + OPTIONS click on Restore in iTunes, I was able to restore it, Jailbreak, and use Bootneuter successfully, whereas before I would get an error communicating to the bootloader.

I am now running an iPhone 2G on the Telstra network. (AUSTRALIA)

Blackra1n RC3 was used.

294 Ghost January 12, 2010 at 4:59 pm

@jake

I don’t think you need to do the Shift+Options Clicking method.

Make sure your iPhone is restored to version 3.1.2 (even though it may be locked) and simply run blackra1n.

From there on, follow the steps in the guide down to the letter, and you should be fine.

Hi Toby,

You need to downgrade your iphone to 3.0 and then use redsnow and 2 bootloaders to unlock it. Sounds complicated but it takes like 20 min.

1.Download the 3.0 firmware from http://659ef965.thesefiles.com (you need 3.0/7A341). I assume you know how to restore it since u already did with 3.1.2

2. Download redsnow (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=R4FXOE0Y)
3.Download bootloader BL-39 (iphonefreakz.com/firmware/BL-39.bin) and BL-46(iphonefreakz.com/firmware/BL-46.bin)

Carefully follow this video and don’t check cydia and ice, install only cydia.
This is the video of how to use redsnow: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wByBC4Uc10Y
hope this helps..if u need any help email me at ad_chiko@hotmail.com

Hi all i’ve been tring for days now to unlock a 2g iphone at 3.1.2 but still have yet to make a call or txt, other than that jail break when fine, but i really want this to be a phone as well, ive tried all of the above but still no service, deleted lock down, tried bootneuter about a million times which seem to flash and then get stuck on determing settings, so i restart and it all looks correct, apart from no signal.
I’ve tried restoring stock custom firmware 1 to 3.1.2 with numerus error 20 – 1604 when tring below 3.0 in recovry and dfu modes that did’nt work, i’ve tried inserting ipcc file for my carrier and that did’nt work, ive tried redsnow on 3.0 and that did’nt work, ive tired offering the thing food that didn’t work lol.
So is there any way to take it back to an easier firmware cause there must be some way to get this thing to be a phone, because im begining to lose the plot. thanks

Thanks a lot for the clear instructions. It works for me (well… more or less).

I am facing few problems though. The “Notes” application doesn’t seem to work along expected lines. Whenever I write a new Note and click on “Done” the application simply exits without saving the note :( . Any ideas.

Also, while the YouTube application opens fine, my phone is unable to connect to YouTube. Is that the same problem for which you have indicated a fix in the follow-up link?

You have to activate/select your WiFi connection after running Blackrain.
Tap on settings – Tap WiFi – then select your WiFi connection. Then try downloading Cydia thru Blackrain again.

Hi Guys,

Thank you so much. This was great.

I purchased my iphone 2G in the U.S, therefore the iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw didn’t work for me because i’m with Rogers. I had to download a custom_restore.ipsw which has the boot neuter build into it. It worked for me.

But my Wi-fi and bluetooth are disabled. I tried restoring it multiple times. Still no luck. I noticed the battery life after the firmware upgrade is terible. With the previous firmware 2.1, i didn’t have to charge my phone for like days and it’s still good. Now after the upgrade, my battery does not even last for few hours, plus i’m missing some of my calls and text messages.

I tried downgrading the firmware after, but keep on getting the 1604 error code. I’m pretty much at the stage of giving up. Plus it’s time for an upgrade of my phone. If you guyz have any similar experience. Please Share..

Thanks in advance.

Not sure I understood this part: don’t forget to backup your phone and then restore in dfu mode with custom software

Basically I downloaded what you said to download, then downloaded another program to make those accessable (which you didn’t mention), clicked on the new icon, it brought up itunes when I did this, I then restored… what now?

# 1)Launch iTunes and connect the iPhone to your Mac / Windows computer.
# 2)put ur phone in DFU mode (Turn your iPhone off. Press and hold the Home button and the Power button at the same time for 10 seconds. After exactly 10 seconds release the Power button. Continue holding the Home button until iTunes pops up a message saying that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.
# 3)The iPhone will show you a blank screen (black).
# 4)Click on ‘Ok’ to the prompt displayed.
# 5)For Windows : Hold the shift key and then hit the restore button.
# 6)In the dialog box that pops up, browse the downloaded custom firmware file (the .ipsw file that you downloaded and joined using hjsplit in step 1.x).
Good luck

Just a question. A student of mine jailbroke and unlocked (or so I thought) my iphone 2g. He used his sim card during this process. Later when I put in a different sim, it said different sim detected. How can I unlock the phone from this point? Can I? will I have to do the process over again. I would wait until Monday, when I see my student again, but the phone is for a friend who is leaving for Europe tomorrow. I’m pretty computer literate, I think I can handle doing whatever I need to, in order to fix…if fixable. Please help. Thank you!

hi there simon and all,

just followed your guide… simple and clear guide, well put together… and I have been using unlockers since ziphone and liberty, so I know when guides are well laid out!
Only problem encountered was that cydia would not install via wifi… encountered “timed out” error!
Cleared Network Settings and tried again… same again!
Then tried to install Rock.. that worked!
The tried to install Cydia… it then installed! Weird!
My sim (from Oz) seemed to be working… slipped in another sim (vodaphone uk) and carrier appear in top bar… it seemed that i didn’t need to Bootneuter!
I remember reading in DevTeam’s guides that once a 2g iphone has been unlocked it is unlocked forever… well, i could be wrong, but that’s what appears to be the case with my phone…

Good luck guys, and power to the user! (It appears with the iPad Apple has gotten the hint and is going to sell these beasts unlocked! This beggars the question if the iPad is using iphone os, then will all these jailbreaking softwares work on it too?)

…I was too fast to say everything was fine… Lost all my stuff from my phone, from pics, to contacts and EVERYTHING. I thought I backed it up by syncing in iTunes first.

Is there any way to bring them back? I am a new Mac user and not sure even where to look.

I still recommend these directions to everyone, made it so EASY !!

Thanks,

Suvi

Connect your phone to iTunes and when it shows under devices right click on it and choose restore from backup, you should have an option to restore from earlier point. Good luck

Thanks for your reply. It restored, but brought back nothing.

I did find some files under library and it seems that they need to be converted to be able to read them. I found a good website for those who experience loss of files. For some reason my phone doesn’t register as jailbroken and therefore the root file selection is grayed out, otherwise this is very helpful link. I am looking into it more as we speak.

Thanks for guiding us in jailbreak and unlock. ATT has disabled my iphone as I requested them that i dont want to use dataplan. I was trying to jailbreak and unlock to make use of other carriers. After jailbreak and before Cydia installation, my iphone rebooted and was getting the screen to connect to ITunes and Emergency call keypad. I tried to restore the iphone with itunes, but it was not giving me option to click ‘restore’ button. After trying to restore iphone with downloaded restore patch, it worked fine. Next problem, I was not able to connect to secured Wi-Fi network, looked at few blogs, but couldn’t resolved the issue. After making it in-secured, i was able to connect to Wi-Fi router. Installed Cydia and then bootneuter inside cydia. Now i have a phone relaxed from data plan.

Hi Simon,
I have a 2g with version 1.1.4. My friend unlocked it for me and i have been using it for sometime now. I want to update it to 3.1.2.
I want to have 3.1.2 and still use it with my GSM provider. Can i update and unlock it without jailbreak.

Thanks in advance.

@Yathiraj,

You can’t upgrade without jailbreaking. As you’re using jailbroken iPhone, you need to go through the jailbreak procedures again to upgrade the iPhone from 1.1.4 to 3.1.2.

Hi Simon,
I got this working. Blindly followed your steps and it worked.
Update from 1.1.4 to 3.1.2
Only the screen got stuck, i rebooted and it started working,

i then connected to Itunes and restored my contacts.

Thanks a lot,

Hi Simon – I would like to know if u could help me with this;

I have an Iphone 2G with OS 2.2, then I tried to upgrade to 3.1.2.
I downloaded the OS 3.1.2 that you have linked here, then when I tried to upgrade to this OS using Itunes (Itunes program, not Itunes OS) this is what happens;
- The Itunes screen shows the “Retsoring Iphone software” status bar at around 75% and never goes ahead from this point.
- The Iphone screens shows the Apple logo and a status bar that progress slowly until be completely filled and then nothing happen. This full status bar in the Iphone lasts by hours, and nothin changes in the Iphone screen and Itunes screen.

I appreciate your help!!

Just unlock it with custom firmware and use of IREB to prevent errors. I expalined everything in details in posts 326 through 333. That should work 100%. Good luck

Hi, I have an iphone 2g that i just upgraded to 3.1.2 through itunes. I’ve run blackrain but don’t get the picture of the face with the flying iphones like i see in all the videos.

It says ‘done. wait for reboot’ but my screen is blank. I’ve left it for about 10 mins thinking it just might be taking a while to reboot, but nothing happened.

Any assistance would be appreciated

If you just updated through itunes, it means that newer 3.1.3 was loaded, it’s not unlockable and kills jailbreak.

Is there anything I can do or do I just have to wait for someone to develop some software?

you can downgrade to 3.1.2 software with no problem, Put your phone in dfu mode and load a old firmware

Hi all,

I have been using my 2G Iphone for quite a number of years. Done the jailbroken and upgraded for 2 times… however due to the inadequate info and problems, I have reverted it back to the older version..

Currently my IPhone firmware and version are as follow:
Version – 1.1.4 (4A102)
Modem Firmware – 04.04.05_G

Can someone advise me how can I go about to do the jailbreak or upgrade or update to the latest version (3.1.2 or 3.2.x) and firmware. Is there a software that can do everything without multiple manual steps or software. I would appreciate it very much if you could advise the detailed steps.

Thanks.
James

Just unlock it with custom firmware and use of IREB to prevent errors. I explained everything in details to other guy in posts 326 through 333. Automatic process, you wouldn’t have to do much, just a few basic steps. That should work 100%. Good luck

Hi Yuranium,
Thanks for the info. Please help to verify and confirm the following before I proceed.

1. Downloaded the Pwnage 3.1.4 tool for Mac.

2. Tried to download IREB- Chose Mac version and received the message of “Mac Version is almost Complete!” – Where can I get the software for Mac?

3. iPhone 2G 3.1.2 Custom Firmware Activated for Other Carriers Part 1 & 2. (Can you please help to confirm. I do not have any contract and the handset was bought from US.)

After the above, do I need to install any software to unlock or etc… Thanks.

Step one: download IREB for MAC or PC from
http://ih8sn0w.com/index.php/welcome.snow#

Step 2: Download activated 3.1.2 firmware from here:
http://www.ilikemyiphone.com/2009/10/13/download-custom-firmware-3-1-2-ipsw-jailbreak-activate-unlock-iphone-2g-3g-3gs-mac-and-windows/
and use HJsplit to put files together after download. You should get *.ipa file

Step 3: Backup your phone on itunes so you dont losse your apps and setting after firmware restore

Step 4: Connect your phone and start IREB (Ireb will provise instruction how to put ur phone in dfu mode). Put your phone in DFU mode. Choose your phone from Ireb choice and click the corresponding button. After clicking the button screen should turn white, its normal.

Step 5: Start itunes and close IREB
Step 6: For Mac, hold option key and click on the “Restore” and choose a path to custom firmware you downloaded, that should start the restoration process. After its done you will be jailbroken and unlocked on 3.1.2
Good luck

PS: I dont think IREB for mac exist yet so you would have to do it on PC or miss all the iREB steps.
Steps with no IREB:
# 1)Launch iTunes and connect the iPhone to your Mac / Windows computer.
# 2)put ur phone in DFU mode (Turn your iPhone off. Press and hold the Home button and the Power button at the same time for 10 seconds. After exactly 10 seconds release the Power button. Continue holding the Home button until iTunes pops up a message saying that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.
# 3)The iPhone will show you a blank screen (black).
# 4)Click on ‘Ok’ to the prompt displayed.
# 5)MAC : Hold the option key and then hit the restore button.
# 6)In the dialog box that pops up, browse the downloaded custom firmware file (the .ipsw file that you downloaded and joined using hjsplit)
Good luck

Hi Yuranium,

Managed to upgrade to the 3.1.2.

However I was unable to restore my backup as it hang at the stage of restoring my Contact. Is there any way to restore individually (notes, photo or even Address)?

Thanks.

I never had a problem with getting my stuff back on any of 3 iphones i owned. Try right click on your device in itunes and choose restore at early point. Maybe that would have or manually sync, your contact, pics….

Hi Yuranium,

Finally, I managed to restore one of the previous backup. It is working now. Many thanks.

Some more queries.
1. Can you please advise if there is a need to install any recommended patches or utilities before any new apps installation?

2. Now, I can get apps from App Store and Cydia. Can I interchange and install apps from anyone of them?

3. I have problem to get my Apple ID verified when I need to install apps from App store. Is it the setting? Any suggestion?

4. Do I need to make any setting change or install Bootneuter?

Overall, it works perfectly and I also noticed some new features. Thanks in advance.

377 yuranium February 5, 2010 at 12:53 pm

You are all set to go to download all the stuff either from itunes or cydia, some stuff i free some is not. You should be unlocked too.
Software choice depends on your preference. GO on cydia apps forums, it will be more helpful with choice than me. I use mod-myi.com and http://www.sinfuliphone.com/ for downloads, instructions and stuff.

Hi Yuranium,

I just fond out that some of my Iphone notes are unable to be opened and cannot save a new notes. This has happened after the upgrade to 3.1.2 and restored from my backup.

Any chance to clean up the notes or if there any equivalent notes apps that I could restore or manual transfer.

Thanks.

379 yuranium February 6, 2010 at 10:22 pm

Maybe something didn’t go right in your case:( i had issues after upgrade once).I would just try to repeat the restoring procedure again(the whole unlocking thing with firmware). Just Everything works on my phone perfectly and I downloaded the same file as you:)

I would suggest everyone to avoid trying any kind of iPhone firmware upgrade upgrade on a Windows Vista machine. Win 7 or XP is ideal. I tried to upgrade thrice on Vista without success. No idea what the reason is.

And thanks Simon and Blackra1n.
