Blackra1n and Blacksn0w are Now Live! Download and Unlock iPhone 3.1.2!

by Simon Ng on November 4, 2009

blacksn0wThe wait is over. Half hour ago, GeoHot has put up the release of Blackra1n RC3 and Blacksn0w at blacksn0w.com. Go ahead and download the jailbreak & unlock tool.

For those who do not keep track of the updates, blackra1n and blacksn0w are the first jailbreak and unlock tools that allows the jailbreak and unlock for iPhone running OS 3.1.2 with baseband 05.11.07. Below is the list of features you’ll find in the latest release:

  • Hacktivation support – Great addition. Now even you’re not using an official SIM, blackra1n can activate your iPhone.
  • Even faster jailbreak process – It only shortens the 30-seconds jailbreak process by 15 second.
  • Mac Tiger + PPC support
  • Unlock your iPhone

The release is imminent and the tools resolve many issues reported by iPhone users earlier. Here are a couple of issues that I have to highlight:

  • For those who have accidentally upgraded to iPhone OS 3.1.2 and lose the unlock, blacksn0w can now free your iPhone and allows you to use unofficial carriers’ sim. Yes, your iPhone signal is now back!
  • Earlier, iPhone Dev team released PwnageTool 3.1.4 that allows the jailbreak of iPhone OS 3.1.2. However, the downside is only Mac version is available. Lots of readers are asking when the Windows version is available. Now, with the release of blackra1n RC3, you can use it on Windows to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.2.

GeoHot has posted a note about blacksn0w and blackra1n. Before downloading the software, remember to read through them carefully:

If you are a loyal blackra1n user who kept the blackra1n.app on your iPhone, run it. You will see Icy replaced by an option “ra1n”. Install this to upgrade your app. After upgrading, run blackra1n.app again. You will see “sn0w”. Install this, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone.

If you are new to the scene, just looking for an unlock, finally ready to upgrade to 3.1.2 and the accompanying baseband, willing to restore for the latest and greatest, or stuck on the “Connect to iTunes” screen, you are in luck. Jailbreaking and unlocking have never been easier. Go to blackra1n.com, click on the logo corresponding to your operating system, run the app, and click “make it ra1n”. When your phone reboots, you’ll see blackra1n.app. Run this, install blacksn0w, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone.

If you jailbroke using pwnage or deleted your blackra1n.app, you are in luck too. Sometime later in the sn0wday, blacksn0w will be added to Cydia, and instructions will be posted here.

If you are on a 2G iPhone, blacksn0w isn’t an option for you. But BootNeuter is, a completely free permanent unlock for your 2G. Of course, blackra1n will work great, and even hacktivate for you.

If you’re ready, go ahead to download the software at blackra1n.com. In case you need further help on the jailbreak, I’ll post up the jailbreak and unlock guide very soon. Stay tuned.

[A Big Thank You to GeoHot! You're brilliant!]

Note: Despite the software has been tested by quite a large number of users, there is no 100% guarantee that it will work on all iPhones. So, jailbreak and unlock at your own risk.

Update #1: To jailbreak iPhone 2G using blackra1n, you can follow this jailbreak guide.

Update #2: To jailbreak and unlock iPhone 3G/3GS using blackra1n and blacksn0w, you can follow this jailbreak guide.

Hi Simon could put in a guide for Iphone2G users in jailbreaking and unlocking the phone. What happens is that once I run blackra1n the phone reboots and comes to the connect to itunes screen. What do i do from there?

If I jailbroke my phone using blackra1n before updating to 3.1.2, is it possible to still update to 3.1.2? I’m currently on version 3.1. What can i do? Update to 3.1.2 while being jailbroken? Reboot on iTunes back to factory settings & then run blackra1n again? Any suggestions? Thanks!

@Beep,

That should be ok. You can upgrade to iPhone OS 3.1.2 and then use blackra1n to jailbreak it. If you’re using unofficial sim, you’ll further need to use blacksn0w to unlock your iPhone.

Simon,

if i jailbroke my 3.1.2 with the old blackra1n before, now i can just run this new version of blackra1n to jailbreak it again and install it into the iphone so I can use “snow” to unlock it?
If doing the above, will it wipe out my cydia apps and I”d have to install everything again or will it leaves my craps alone?

Kindly advise if Blacksnow can be used on iPhone 2G and how it works ?

It’s pointless without WiFi… So many people are suffering from this WiFi issue.

For me, I can’t even detect WiFi, so no unlocking for me until… Who knows.

But well done geohotz.

I was using firmware version 1.1.4 and T-Mobile with the help of Zibri. I accidentally upgraded itunes 9.0.2 which upgraded firmware to 3.1.2 (7d11). Now my iphone does not work. This is good for email only. I tried everything possible. I used blackra1n, did not work. I used ziphone, did not work. I tried pwnage did not work.
Stupid thing keeps on telling me that This iphone does not have the software needed or something like this. Any genius here who can help me get back to my Tmobile with iphone??
Thanks

Thanks Simon. I did not know what i did but my phone is back to the normal screen and fully restored. I realised i cant use it when i put in my singtel sim card ( as i am in Singapore and bought the unlocked iphone in US). My version is 3.1.3 and modem firmware is 05.12.01. Does it mean i have to unlock it again?

I used Blackra1n and Snow to unlock the phone. Everything looks like it went through fine, however when I switch the att sim card out with a Tmobile sim, i have no signal to make phone calls. Any ideas for this issue out there? I have tried several times to unlock with no success. I did successfully jailbreak using BlackRa1n. I am on firmware 3.1.2.

All inputs are much appreciated.

Just wanted to post a follow-up to a question regarding the blackra1n site someone asked above. Quite a few people are getting a 403 error when they attempt to download from the blackra1n site.

The error is: Forbidden No hotlinking to blackra1n.com is allowed If you came here from the blackra1n website be sure you aren’t blocking HTTP referrers. Some firewalls and browser plugins do this.

I searched the web for quite a while, but was unable to find a solution. I finally figured it out, and this page is the first result when searching this problem in google, so I’ll post the solution here….hopefully it’ll help someone out!

Solution (for firefox):
1. Open a new tab/window and enter about:config into the address bar.
2. After the prompt about voiding your warranty and potentially bricking your box, locate the following preference entry: network.http.sendRefererHeader
3. Set the number in the ‘value’ field to ‘2′.

That’s it! By default, firefox should have this value set to 2 (according to their docs) but for some reason it was set to ‘0′ on my copy. Hopefully this helps some frustrated people out there.
