You’re obsessed by the tons of iPhone games in App store, right? Let’s do something healthy with iPhone this week. With the release of iPhone 3GS, it includes a built-in Nike+ support to monitor your workouts. Like me, if you’re a regular runner, you’ll love this feature and use the iPhone to keep track your runs. For starter, the Nike+ feature was first introduced in iPod and later bundles in iPod touch. The Nike+ support on iPhone 3GS is exactly the same as the iPod touch with receiver built-in.
How it Works
To use Nike+ feature, you need to purchase iPod sensor and slip it into a pocket of Nike+ compatible shoe, which is beneath the insole. During your run, the sensor tracks your steps and sends the data to your iPhone 3GS with receiver. With the data, iPhone 3GS is thus able to track your running distance, calories, pace and workout duration of your run.
Using Nike+ Application for the very First Time
By default, the Nike + iPod app is disabled. To pair the Nike+ sensor with iPhone, you need to go to Settings and flip the “Nike + iPod” option to On. Go back to the iPhone home screen and the Nike+ icon should appear. For the very first time when using the sensor, the app requires you to go through a simple configuration to pair with the sensor.

Tip: Now, you’re ready to run with your iPhone. Before your actual workout, however, it’s recommended to a few hundred meters for calibration purpose.
Running with iPhone and Nike+ App
The interface of Nike+ app is simple and intuitive. It offers four different types of workouts to select including basic, time, distance and calories. The basic workout should work for most situtions. After choosing the workout type, simply type the Play button and start running. The iPhone 3GS and Nike+ sensor works together to keep track your runs automatically.

Upon completing your run, Nike+ shows you the distance, time, pace and calories of the run.

When you’re back home, simply dock your iPhone and launch iTunes to sync the running data to NikePlus.com. This is the coolest thing of Nike+. By syncing the workout data, you can use the NikePlus website to keep track all your runs. You can also set goals and arrange your workout plan. It helps you set target (say, run 42km in two weeks or burn 4,000 calories in 4 weeks) and push you to complete your workout plan. Other than that, you can also share your runs with others, which makes running fun.

So, for this coming weekend, pickup your iPhone and go out for a run! You can purchase the Nike+ sensor for US$19 through your local Apple Store or Amazon.
Oh! You do not have a pair of Nike+ compatible shoe? Me too, but it’s not a problem. You do not need to throw away your running shoes. There is a workaround for that. I’ll cover it in the upcoming post. Stay tuned.
