Possible Fix for Winterboard Problem After Blackra1n Jailbreak

by Simon Ng on October 17, 2009

blackra1n-jailbreak-logoSome iPhone users have reported that Winterboard doesn’t work after jailbreaking with blackra1n, the 30-second jailbreak tool developed by GeoHot. iPhone just can’t change theme in Winterboard.

So, what’s the problem and how do you fix it?

A reader (thanks, Rawsole!) has sent me a tweet for the possible fix. It looks like the problem is due to Icy and it’s suggested that not to install Rock/Icy to avoid the issue. If you’re following the jailbreak guide to install cydia only, you shouldn’t have the problem.

Alternatively, if it doesn’t work out for you, I suggest you to use PwnageTool 3.1.4 to jailbreak your iPhone again. iPhone Dev team also addressed this blackra1n issue on its blog:

For the early adopters who ran blackra1n and are having problems with mobilesubstrate, winterboard, diskaid, or ifunbox, you can install a custom .ipsw from PwnageTool to fix these issues. That’s because all jailbroken devices accept a custom .ipsw created by PwnageTool. (However, if you ran blackra1n on a 3G or 3GS that means you updated to stock 3.1.x, and the carrier unlock is now out of reach. We’ll continue to work on a carrier unlock for the latest basebands, but the timeframe for such an unlock is unknowable.)

Do you experience this Winterboard issue after blackra1n jailbreak? Let us know if the solution works out for you.

If Winterboard is not working after Blackra1n, Cydia, and Icy then you can restore your phone and make sure you install Cydia ONLY! DONT install Icy!

I made that mistake and I really didnt want to spend those long hours restoring my phone so I reinstall Cydia from Blackra1n and reinstalled Winterboard and it works again.

The error is not caused by icy itself, it is caused by DPKG the unpacker causes extraction errors.
All you have to do is to reinstall DPKG and reinstall the apps and dependencies again. MobileSubstrate must be reinstalled too.

Ok, KICK THIS FOOTBALL!!!!! My winterboard themes just disappeared!!! WTF. So I used cydelete to remove it after many reboots and resprings. NADA!!! Cydia was also acting very strange. I kept on getting errors, it would load or install anything. SO after picking my phone up from across the room, i restored it to my default settings with Itunes. I didnt back up NOTHING!! I then re-jailbroke using blackra1n and only installed cydia. SAME ERRORS, NO WINTERBOARD and I cant install anything without getting “sub-process bzip returned an error code (2) then it lists websites one of them being http://apt.saurik.com – I may be wrong but arent they the ones that made cydia? This is my last stop b4 i go back to my regular phone.

Hi, I didn’t download the rock like u said, so i downloaded cydia only, after that i download winterboard and then it says u have to tap on reboot device. So i reboot, and then when i turn back on it says to connect to itunes and it erased (restored) my data!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cant power it off completely without it going into recovery. (FYI to power off, i hold power down, then slide off) WTF IS WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????????????????????????????????????

Josh calm down it’s nothing to worry about. If u go to the settings and go to about look at the model if the first two letters are MC than there is nothing u can do about it. Your jailbreak is wat is known as a tethered jailbreak. This means that wen ever ur iPod is turned off you have to plug it into the computer and rejailbreak. DO NOT RESTORE YOUR IPOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes it is a pain but after about a week u will get used to it. At the moment there are no actual untethered jailbreaks for the iPod touch 3g. Just be patient and i’m sure some genius will come out with one. Well I hope I helped u Josh and any one else that is haveing this problem.

Oh ya I forgot to mention that I reccomend installing both CYDIA and ROCK rock is great as a substitute for cydia if the cobstant updating and extreme slowness is pissing u off I personally love rock it hasent failed me once. Plus unlike cydia rock gives u the option of respringjng now or wen ur done with rock ( ur not forced to respring after some downloads)(also rock doesn’t load all the time thus making it a hell of a lot faster than cydia) btw it’s only ICY that has problems the others work great….well I hoped I could help u again lol
