Apple Releases iPhone OS 3.1.2. Jailbreaker, please hold off the Upgrade!

iPhone 3.1.2 Update Yesterday, Apple quietly rolled out an update for iPhone OS, pushing up the version number to 3.1.2.

As mentioned in the release note of the update, iPhone OS 3.1.2 fixes three important bugs

Resolves sporadic issue that may cause iPhone to not wake from sleep
Resolves intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular network services until restart
Fixes bug that could cause occasional crash during video streaming

The update is already live. If you’re not using jailbroken iPhone, simply plug your iPhone to computer and upgrade it via iTunes. Once finished, your iPhone will be automatically restarted. That’s it. For AT&T user, after the OS upgrade, you’ll also be prompted to update the carrier file to v5.6.

So, what about jailbreak? For jailbroken iPhone user or those who intends to jailbreak their iPhone, please hold off the upgrade. For now, you should not upgrade your iPhone directly in iTunes to iPhone OS 3.1.2. Otherwise, your iPhone may not be jailbroken again. The iPhone Dev team also mentioned in its blog not to upgrade to the latest version:

PwnageTool and redsn0w are not yet compatible with 3.1.2

There is no estimated release time for compatible tools (please don’t bug us about this).

So jailbreaker, remember to stay away from the upgrade.

Other that the above bugs, Apple doesn’t mention anything bug fixes about battery performance. Despite of that, if you have installed the update, be sure to let us know if you find any improvement regarding the battery life.

Note: Where is iPhone OS 3.1.1? Probably Apple intends to align the version number with iPod Touch, for which the previous version is 3.1.1.

Update: You can now use PwnageTool v3.1.4 for Mac to jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2.

3.1 window jail break is not even out yet and now 3.12??? Let’s the waiting game start again!!!!!

2 Simon Ng October 11, 2009 at 1:55 pm: @Jogb, other than iPhone Dev team, there are other groups working on other jailbreak solutions and will be released very soon. Some also mentioned it’ll work with iPhone OS 3.1.2. So, let’s wait and see.

Hi Simon. I hope you answer my question. I was on 3.1 when I jailbroke my iPhone 3G thru Blackra1n. Can I update to 3.1.2 without losing my jailbreak? And If ever I lose it can I jailbreak it again thru Blackra1n? or it doesn’t matter at all and just stick to 3.1 and continue enjoying my baby..:) How important is this 3.1.2? @lilyrose, iPhone 3.1.2 is just a bug fix version and doesn’t offer any new features. You can check out the details about 3.1.2 here. So, if you’re happy with iPhone 3.1, I suggest you to stick with 3.1 first.

I experienced improved battery performance with 3.1?? With my iPhone only needing to be charged every second night which was fantastic.
3.1.2 has halved that, and some, with my phone turning off before I even got home from work on day one!

ok now i did a mistake and i made upgrade to 3.1.2
and i tried many times with blackrain but it’s not working, what can i do now?

Are you iPhone 2G or 3G? For 3G, there is currently no unlock solution for that. Even you downgrade from iPhone 3.1.2, ultrasn0w still cannot unlock your iPhone. But if you’re using 2G, you can use PwnageTool 3.1.4 to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone.
