PwnageTool Updated to Support iPhone 3GS Jailbreak on iPhone OS 3.1

by Simon Ng on October 3, 2009

pwned pineappleiPhone Dev team has just released an update for PwnageTool. This is a good news for iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 2G users. As you know, the earlier release of PwnageTool 3.0 only support jailbreaking on iPhone 2G and 3G. With the debut of PwnageTool 3.1.3, it now supports both iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 2G.

However, please take note. The PwnageTool does not support those out-of-the-box iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch 2G. That means, if your iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch are already on 3.1 and you haven’t pwned it before, PwnageTool cannot support your iPhone for the jailbreak. Before applying jailbreak using PwnageTool on your iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch 2G, please read the following note from iPhone Dev team carefully:

1. GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G(S) with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service then you should only update your device with an .ipsw that is made with the new PwnageTool. There are no second chances with this. You need to remember that PwnageTool will provide an upgrade path to newer versions of the iPhone software in the future.
2. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
3. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
4. At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.1 capable version of PwnageTool.
5. PwnageTool will work for the iPhone 3GS assuming you have already Pwned it at 3.0 or 3.0.1
6. PwnageTool will work for the iPod touch 2G assuming you have already Pwned it at 3.0 or 3.0.1
7. PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G(S) and the iPod touch (1st Generation and 2nd Generation) but NOT the iPod touch 3rd generation.
8. For 3G and 3G(S) users who are Pwned, PwnageTool is your key to updating in the future, just remember to never install an update directly from Apple, always use an .ipsw that has been created with PwnageTool.
9. There is no Windows version of PwnageTool it is a Mac OS X tool only, we are not developing a Windows version of PwnageTool.

To download the PwnageTool 3.1.3, check out the below links:

If you meet the criteria, you can follow this jailbreak guide of PwnageTool to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS. The procedures should be very similar but make sure you download the correct firmware file.

This article is for those that have 3.0 or 3.0.1 firmware on thier iPhones. This wil upgrade your iPhone to 3.1 jailbraked firmware. If you already have updated your firmware to 3.1 via iTunes, you are out of luck, just like I am :)

Well my iPhone 3G is running 3.0… So what can I do? Is it worth it? I’m not exactly sure what other features this will give me.

are there any reasons in particular that a windows version won’t be developed?

@FrontLineMOG: You can update your iPhone to 3.1 Jailbraked that is already cooked from Pwnage Tool in MAC OS. You can find the firmware on some torents. Just search 3.1 custom firmware.

@Chandler: It will be developed soon, don’t worry.
