PwnageTool 3.1 Released for iPhone OS 3.1 Jailbreak

When talking about iPhone jailbreak, Mac user always win the race. Not long ago, iPhone Dev team releases a new version of PwnageTool for iPhone OS 3.1 jailbreaking. As usual, PwnageTool is designed to run on Mac OS X only.

So, for Windows user, you’ll need to wait for the team to release the update of redsn0w to handle the jailbreak.

As the team mentioned, PwnageTool 3.1 supports the jailbreak of iPhone 3.1 OS on iPhone 1st Generation (2G), 3G and the iPod touch 1G. But please note it doesn’t support iPhone 3GS or 2G/3G iPod touch. The team will release another update in near future for iPhone 3GS users.

Before you apply PwnageTool for iPhone 3.1 jailbreak, please read the following notes carefully as warned by the team:

If you are using a 3G iPhone with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should only upgrade to 3.1 with a PwnageTool created .ipsw. DO NOT upgrade directly in iTunes.
If you have an iPhone 2G (1st generation), PwnageTool 3.1 will unlock your iPhone automatically.
But for iPhone 3G users upgrading to 3.1, please use ultrasn0w to unlock. Make sure you use PwnageTool to create a custom 3.1 .ipsw.
Let me highlight once again. PwnageTool 3.1 does not support iPhone 3GS. It can only work on iPhone 2G, 3G and iPod touch 1G.

The jailbreaking procedures of PwnageTool 3.1 should be very similar to the old version. I’ll put up a jailbreak guide for iPhone 3.1 in near future. At the mean time, you can also refer to the existing guide for PwnageTool. But make sure you use PwnageTool 3.1 and iPhone 3.1 IPSW file [You can download the ipsw file from here].

Update: Some updates from iPhone Dev team:

1. Unlocked users on the 3G will probably notice that the name and/or logo of their carrier is missing, but they still have full bars and a signal. So far this seems to be purely a cosmetic issue and it doesn’t impact your signal or coverage. We hope to have this issue “fixed” when we release the 3GS compatible version of PwnageTool.
2. As of 3.1, the *.ipcc carrier bundles are signed, and you can no longer force tethering capability simply by crafting your own bundle. The good news is this obstacle can probably be overcome by virtue of the jailbreak. But so far that extra hack is not part of the PwnageTool custom IPSW creation.

Made it with no problem just like previous ones

Pay attention that some winterboard dependable apps will cause some substrate panics and you will have to be uninstall them manually until the updates from their manufacturers have been released in cydia. To name a few: Backgrounder, Boss preferences, Weather Icon. Also pay attention that if you have any of the five icon apps installed you will not be able to sync it with I tunes new sync method. It will not crash but the apps on you iphone will be messed up on each page..

The rest is up and running. Did not noticed any improvement on the battery as well as global heat is the same as before on 3.0.

Saurik updated today the Mobile Substrate as well as Cydia so everything running smoothly has before.

can’t seem to get the “On File” section to work……the hosts file cannot be modified. Simon, do you have a more detailed guide?

Hi Simon,

I’m using iPhone 3G with official carrier, is it normal that the carrier logo will disappear after jailbreaking OS3.1?

Hi Simon, hope u r having a great weekend..
I’m a bit tired after stressing hours trying to upgrade & jailbreak my 2g iphone to 3.0.1.. finally did it but i have some weird issue that not sure how fix now. After all the redsn0w jailbreaking (successfully so far), i tried to restore from backup (normal stuff, right?) but after the whole process was almost finished itunes told me that “my iphone cannnot be synced because i have not sufficient privileges to do so”!!???
This happened as well a few times before but only after my itunes was upgraded to 8.2.1, nothing major back then but now that i start from scratch and wanted to put all my info back on the phone itunes is not letting me do it.. the weird thing is that it looks like it’s working, i have the progress bar running, files being copied, apps being transfered, etc… but after all that it tells me it cannot be done..
Any idea why this could be happening, or most important, any suggestion on how to fix it?

No idea about the problem and probably it’s not due to jailbreaking. Did you try to upgrade to iTunes 9?
