Cycorder is one of the must-have applications for jailbroken iPhone 2G /3G. It simply empowers the iPhone camera with the video recording capability. It works pretty great. Some iPhone jailbreakers even said, you can just install Cycorder to turn your iPhone 3G into iPhone 3GS.
However, if you look into the video features of iPhone 3GS, it’s definitely more superior than that of Cycorder. Put aside the video quality, you can easily access the video clips in camera roll. What’s more is iPhone 3GS lets you easily edit the video clip, trim it to your desired length and upload to Youtube with a simple tap.
Now, with a hack developed by an iPhone developer – Simplyskate, you can enjoy the video editing feature on iPhone 2G/3G. It also allows you to access the video clips shot by Cycorder in camera roll. Cool, right?
Before you apply the hack on your jailbroken iPhone 2G or 3G, please read the following first:
- This hack is in beta. That means, it’s still under testing and it is not guaranteed to work.
- As this hack is not officially released, when video editing is enabled, the camera will not be functioned properly. This is the limitation of this hack. But you can simply turn off video editing to bring back the camera.
- This hack is not available on Cydia. So, you’ll need to know how to use SSH to transfer file from your computer to iPhone. You can check out this post if you are not familiar with SSH.
Okay, you can’t wait for the official release and try out video editing on your jailbroken iPhone 2G or 3G. Continue to read on and go through the procedures to enable video editing:
1. First, make sure you have installed Cycorder, SBSettings and MobileTerminal on your jailbroken iPhone. If you haven’t installed them, check out the following posts for details:
2. Connect to your iPhone via SSH using Winscp for Windows or Cyberduck for Mac.
3. Once connected, navigate to /private/var/tmp directory on your iPhone.
4. Download VideoToggle.zip for iPhone, extract the folder and then Copy it to /private/var/tmp directory on your iPhone as shown in the screenshot below:

5. Now launch “MobileTerminal” on your iPhone and run the following commands:
su root
alpine
bash /private/var/tmp/VideoToggle/install

6. Once complete, swipe the status bar on the top of screen to launch SBSettings by swiping on the status bar on the top and tap on VideoEdit to enable it (when enabled, it’s turned green):

7. Now go to your Camera Roll in Photos app. You should now able to access your Cycorder videos in Camera Roll, edit them and upload the video to Youtube directly.

Finally, as mentioned before, you cannot use Camera app when video editing is enabled. You can simply disable it before shooting photos with camera app. Hopefully, this can be fixed when the official version is released.

Hi Simon, have to admit i was eager to put this feature into my recently upgraded to 3.0.1 2g iphone.. it looks really cool in this blog! But after i go thru the whole precess i don’t see any difference between before and after. As other bloggers said, the iphone does a mini re-spring every time i switch it on or off, but either way can’t see the videos taken on camera roll neither play with them (trim/edit, etc)..
Any thoughts about this issue?
can it be fixed? and, in case it cannot, how could i uninstall it?
Thanks again for ur brilliant work in this blog thou..
Damn! I was all stoked on this too! Having the same problem as everyone else with the respring once video editing is enabled. Super huge bust!
Worked like a charm! Now if we can get video recording to work, we’ll be golden!
