There is no shortage of iPhone applications for accessing Wikipedia content. If you search for Wiki in iTunes App store, you can find quite a number of iPhone apps that let you access Wikipedia right from your iPhone. None of these apps, however, is developed officially by the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization behind the Wikipedia.
Today, the foundation finally releases an official iPhone application to access its popular Wikipedia and it is now available at App Store for free download [iTunes link]. The application is very simple but lacks some advanced features.
When I launch the iPhone application, my first impression is that it looks nearly the same as its mobile version of Wikipedia website. Take a look at the below screenshots. The image on the left show the Wikipedia iPhone application and the one on your right shows the mobile version of Wikipedia website. Do they look very similar?

I tried to dig deep and with the hope to discover other features that are probably not found in the mobile website. But, disappointed. At the mean time, it seems the Wikimedia Foundation concentrates on simplicity and rolls out an app that focuses on delivering Wiki content to your iPhone. For other advanced or fancy features, just put them aside. If you need me to quote one feature that you can’t find on the mobile website, it’s the ability to search wiki with history tracking. And, that’s the only “advanced” feature of its iPhone app.

Anyhow, this is the very first release of the Wiki iPhone application from the official foundation. It’s quite sure the developers will continue to polish the application and bundle more advanced & awesome features in the upcoming release. Let’s wait and see. But for now, if you’re looking for some good Wikipedia iPhone apps, you may try out Wikiamo [iTunes link] or Wikipanion [iTunes link]. These Wiki applications offers more features than the official app such as bookmark wiki, share wiki link via email, search suggestion, search in page, etc.
I believe most of you should know what Wikipedia is. In case you haven’t heard of it, Wikipedia is a free and collaborative encyclopedia project supported by the non-profit Wikimedia foundation. The nature of Wikipedia is that every article (i.e. wiki) is collaboratively edited by anyone around the world. The Wikipedia’s 13 million articles (3 million in English) represents a vast amount of reference and is currently the largest reference work on the Internet. To find out more and experience it, check out www.wikipedia.org.
