Jailbreaking works for iPhone OS 3.0.1

Previously, I have covered the release of iPhone OS 3.0.1, which is a security fix for SMS vulnerability. For iPhone jailbreaker, you probably want to upgrade to iPhone 3.0.1 for the sake of SMS bug fix. However, your top concerns are:

Is iPhone OS 3.0.1 jailbreakable?
Does ultrasn0w work on iPhone OS 3.0.1?

And… the answer is absolutely yes for both questions! The iPhone Dev team has confirmed that both redsn0w and ultrasn0w work for iPhone 3.0.1:

You can re-use redsn0w v0.8 we released a few weeks ago to jailbreak today’s 3.0.1 update. Just let iTunes update or restore you to official 3.0.1 then run redsn0w. The only “trick” is that when redsn0w asks you to identify the IPSW used, point it at the 3.0 IPSW instead of the 3.0.1 one. After the jailbreak, reinstall ultrasn0w 0.9 if you need the unlock.

So, with the simple trick in redsn0w, it is safe to upgrade to iPhone 3.0.1 and jailbreak it.

If you accidentally upgraded to this iPhone OS version, simply go through the jailbreak process again (but remember to use the iPhone 3.0 IPSW in redsn0w) and re-install ultrasn0w 0.9 to unlock your iPhone.

Unlike normel something went wrong. I’m watching the syncing of my phone and itunes is still telling me i’m on 3.0 after i told it to update to 3.0.1??? Anyone? Was there a step somewhere in there that i could have told it to reinstall 3.0?

Hey Simon,

I have never had real trouble with these steps before but i feel like I’m missing something with the 3.0.1. I have tried twice, each time starting from scratch and making sure to follow the steps precisely. Twice now when i began to load all the old contacts and photo’s from the back up it says while doing so that it is using the 3.0, and gives me the option to update to 3.0.1 again. I have also gotten the 1406 error and i think the 0009 error on failed tries. Any idea what I’m missing? Thanks for all of the help. Don’t know where you find the time.

I just jailbroke my phone (thanks to your site for all the useful info). Before jailbreaking, I already had 3.0.1 – after jailbreak it says I have 3.0 in settings….Do i need to upgrade to 3.0.1 in iTunes again, then do the jailbreak process again?

[Help !! I can't jailbreak my iphone in firmware 3.0.1]

Condition:
- Iphone: 3GS, Firmware 3.0.1, factory unlocked
- Itune 8.0, redsn0w 0.8

As noticed, firmware is already latest. Thus, i skipped to update the firmware using iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw. Then, I use redsn0w 0.8 for jailbreaking. It hang at process No.13 “Waiting for reboot” (And I’ve waited several hours), and never completed the jailbreak process.

Note: I try the initial step as well, i.e. to “shift+restore” using the iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw, but itune even stated that it’s not compatible.
What shall I do? Appreciate advice from you guys.

Thank you.

Regards,
David

Hi Simon,

My iPhone 3G is currently running on OS2.2.1 and I’m ready to upgrade to OS3.01. Would really appreciate it if you verify if these are the steps that I need to perform:

1) Upgrade iTunes to v8.2
2) Restore to OS3.0
3) Connect to iTunes and update to OS3.01
4) jailbreak via RedSn0w v0.8.

Thanks!

@joanne, they are correct. But I think you can skip step 2 and directly restore to firmware 3.0.1.

Hi Simon!

I was waiting for OS3.1 to be released and didn’t do the upgrade to 3.01 earlier. So, now that I read there are so many problems with the OS 3.1 plus the jailbreak for 3.1 Windows is not out yet, I’m gonna go ahead with 3.01. But, the problem is my iTunes is still at version 8.02 and v8.2 is not available anymore! Can I upgrade to v9.01 then jailbreak my phone using OS3.01? Thanks a bunch!

Ok, I followed this step by step and my iphone got completely fucked… “Your iPhone may be damaged and cannot be activated. We recommend visiting your nearest iPhone store…”

Tried re-virginizing by pressing home+sleep buttons, and it failed to restore to factory settings.

WTF!!

@Jenzy3, for firmware 3.1.2, you need to use PwnageTool 3.1.4. Check out this post for details.
