On Wednesday, Google updated its mobile homepage and rolled out a new feature called “My Location“. If you used to visit Google.com with Safari on iPhone 3.0, you may aware the introduction of My Location feature – New! Try My Location to find restaurants, shops and bars near you.
With My Location, you can easily to narrow down the search results relevant to your physical location. Suppose you’re now in Paris and you’re looking for Starbucks near you. By telling Google your location with the “My Location” feature, Google shows you those Starbucks that are close to your location.
To use My Location, you can simply tap on “My Location” link on Google.com and accept to share your location with Google. Then iPhone uses the built-in GPS function to locate you and send the physical location back to Google. After Google gets your location, you can simply search as usual. And, Google will show the organic search result, plus local results relevant to your location (if there is any).

Google will not keep track of your location. So, whenever you move from one location to another, tap the “Update” link to update your location. If you decide to disable My Location, you can always configure it in Preferences (which can be found at the bottom of Google homepage). Simple set “Allow use of device location” to “No” to turn off the My Location feature.

As of today, search with My Location is only available to US and UK homepage. It is expected Google will release My Location to other countries very soon. For those non-US or non-UK users, that doesn’t mean you have to wait until the feature comes to your country. You can simply go to Google.com or Google.co.uk and try out the location feature.
