Finally, iPhone Dev team changed their mind and released redsn0w 0.8 to jailbreak iPhone 3GS. Redsn0w 0.8 is a light-weight and easy-to-use jailbreak tool to jailbreak iPhone 2G, 3G and 3GS, as well as, iPod Touch 3.0. It supports Windows, Mac OS and Linux platform.

Redsn0w should not be new to you, if you have already jailbroken your iPhone 2G/3G on iPhone 3.0. The latest version (i.e. 0.8) of redsn0w adds the jailbreak support for iPhone 3GS, as well as, comes with the below fixes (according to Bigboss):

1. Proper kernel patches which will enable logome (after it’s updated for 3.0).
2. Supports Mobilesubstrate and Winterboard on iPhone 3GS

Unlock iPhone 3GS using Ultrasn0w

Ultrasn0w 0.8 for iPhone 3G/3GS UnlockAlong with the update of redsn0w, iPhone Dev Team also releases ultrasn0w 0.8 to add the support of iPhone 3GS unlock. As claimed by the team, stability of ultrasn0w should be drastically improved.

The new version of ultrasn0w can still be used for iPhone 3G unlock. So, if you experienced any unlock problem on ultrasn0w 0.6, you may try out the latest version.

Tip: For iPhone 3GS user, after running ultrasn0w, you may need to go to Settings->General->Reset and tap Reset Network Settings to make it work.

You can download redsn0w 0.8 (Windows / Mac) from Bigboss. For the jailbreak procedures, it should be very similar to the old version of redsn0w and you can check out the jailbreak guide here.

Redsn0w crashes at DFU mode on my mac, is it because I’m on a G5 PPC?

Hi Simon
I’m just answering my own question. I solved my initial unlock problem by Re-Downloading the iPhone firmware (iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw)- there must have been something wrong with it. It was still a ‘Clunky’ business, -”Waiting for re-spring”..boot”..whatever..waited for ever until I pressed the sleep/power button and MADE the thing fire up, and then certain Cydia Apps would not run till a friend advised me to start over putting the phone into recovery mode and doing restore from backup first. Anyway, everything now works fine.
Thanks for all the good ideas!

Hi Simon,
I’ve tried the RedSnow 0.8 (Windows) to jailbreak my iPhone 3GS. No luck, got stuck at the “Please wait while your device is being jailbroken. Waiting for reboot”.

Note that I couldn’t restore the download firmware using the iTune 8.2, it says “The firmware doesn’t match” or something. So I started the RedSnow 0.8 straight to jailbreak the phone because I already have the firmware 3.0.

Any idea?
Thanks.

I just unlocked/jailbroke my iphone 3GS with redsnow 0.8 and i’m using the phone on T-mobile net work just fine. the only catch is that i cannot launch any of the apps that i’ve down loaded before or after the unlock. i cant even launch them if i put the original sim back in. i’ve tried a few other things but basically unlocked = can only launch pre installed apps and nothing more. does anyone else have this problem? any solutions?

Hi Joe,
Sounds like the same problem I had only worse, You could try this:
1. Plug in and back up your iPhone to iTunes.
2. Unplug and switch off.
3. While holding the Home key down plug back in so the phone enters recovery mode (with the plug and iTunes screen).
4. itunes should report finding an iphone in recovery mode-click OK
5. Click the restore option.
6. Wait!!!!
7. Click the Re-Sync from backup option and wait again.
8. Re-Jailbreak with redsn0w 0.8 and ‘iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw’ and re-install your Cydia apps.
It takes a while but it worked for me, good luck!
SI.

Can we unlock i-phone 3gs with 3.01 OS ?? If so .. do i need to follow the same procedure ??

23 Simon Ng October 1, 2009 at 10:07 pm

@Sam, correct. You can follow the same guide to jailbreak and unlock iPhone 3.0.1. But please do not upgrade to iPhone 3.1, which is currently unlockable.

Simon please help, I upgraded my 3GS to 3.1 how do I downgrade it to 3.0.1. I cant use any sim card now.

Thanks

@Muhammad Nur:

Downgrading is not possible anymore.. Apple has made it impossible to do that.
At the moment, the only way to restore is with iTunes. iTunes needs an internet connection to do that. It will ask Apple to sign the firmware package and apple recently stopped signing older firmware’s. :(

Just jailbraked my 3GS 3.01 with this tutorial. Everything went right, except for my wifi which isn’t working anymore :( . It finds ssid’s can connect but within a few seconds the connection drops.

Anyone has the same problem.. ? I wonder if an update to 3.1 will fix my wifi.

27 Simon Ng October 4, 2009 at 12:13 pm

@Ruben, please do not upgrade to iPhone 3.1. You’ll lose the jailbreak. For the wifi problem, did you try to reset your network setting? You can further refer to this post for Wifi-related issue.

@puneet, they are different. The first one is for 2G iPhone and the other is for 3G. Make sure you download the correct firmware file. Otherwise, you can’t complete the jailbreak process.

Hi
I received a brand new 3GS from US via a friend today. I know nothing about iPhone. This phone seems to be locked as it has AT&T for the carrier. So I bravely try this jailbrake/unlock via redsn)w 0.8.
1/ I downloaded the files : BL-39.bin, BL-46.bin & redsn0w (0.8) that I put into one folder on my Mac Book Pro, then copy the file iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore into the Librairy/iTunes/iTunes Software Updates
2/ I quit iTunes, launched redsn0w and followed the instructions.
3/ After holding on/off then with home then release on/off buttons, the screen keeps indicating ‘Please wait while your device is being jailbroken. Waiting for reboot’ and nothing happened after one hour or so!
4/ The phone does not want to boot anymore… nothing happen at all and when I launch iTunes it says that the iphone is in recovery mode and needs to be restore… to the latest system
What should I do and what went wrong???
I am suppose to use my phone with MTN pay-as-you-go in RSA.
Help please… Is there anyone close to Cape Town who can help me?

Me again…
My phone was originally on 3.0.1. So I decided to try to restore the system. I downloaded the firmware 3.0.1 for 3 GS (iPhone2,1_3.0.1_7A400_Restore.ipsw) then alt click on restore in iTunes 9.0.1 but at the end of the process I get the error that the phone is not eligible for that firmware… weird?

I have now managed to build a custom ipsw 3.12 with PwnageTool 3.1.4 and restore it successfully with iTunes. However my pay-as-you-go MTN (RSA) sim card does not seem to be recognized. On top left there is only … and network and carrier is not available.
Should I do something else?
