Quick Update about iPhone 3.0 Jailbreak

Post image for Quick Update about iPhone 3.0 Jailbreak

Last week is a great week for iPhone – the debut of iPhone 3.0 & iPhone 3G S. And, at the same time it’s a great week for me – taking a short break & celebrating our anniversary with my wife.

Today, I’m back.

Yes, I missed this great iPhone week and failed to keep you update on the iPhone news. But, thanks for all readers who keep checking out this blog. I have received tons of emails asking about the jailbreaking status for iPhone 3.0 and awaiting an update of the jailbreak guide. Here, I’m going to give you a quick update on the jailbreak news and you should expect an update of the jailbreak guide for iPhone 3.0 in these two days.

Is iPhone 3.0 jailbreakable and how?

First, the obvious question is whether iPhone 3.0 is jailbreakable or not. The simple answer is “it depends”. It depends on the model of iPhone you’re using. For now, not all iPhone models are jailbreakable and here is the list:

For iPhone 2G (1st generation) – Yes, it can be jailbroken
For iPhone 3G (2nd generation) – Yes, it can be jailbroken
For iPhone 3G S (latest generation) – No, it can’t be jailbroken (as of today)

At the mean time, if you’ve purchased the new iPhone 3G S, there is currently no jailbreak solution available. But for those using iPhone 2G or 3G, it’s great that you can still jailbreak your iPhone after upgrading to firmware 3.0.

The next question is HOW? How do you jailbreak the iPhone 3.0 OS? As of today, iPhone Dev Team has released two jailbreak tools known as PwnageTool 3.0 (for Mac) and redsn0w (for both Windows & Mac). Both tools are designed for jailbreaking iPhone 3.0 on iPhone 2G & 3G.

If you’re Mac user and have done jailbreak before, you’d be very familiar with PwnageTool. The new version of PwnageTool simply allows you to jailbreak iPhone 3.0.

For redsn0w, however, it may be new to you. According to iPhone Dev Team, redsn0w, which is actually similar to QuickPwn, is an easy to use, multi-platform, multi-device jailbreaking and unlocking (iPhone 2G only) tool for the iPhone 2G (original iPhone), the iPhone 3G. You can simply use this tool to jailbreak iPhone 3.0.

I’ll soon post up a detailed jailbreak guide for iPhone 3.0 using both tools. But if you can’t wait for the guide or you’re adventurous, do remember to read the following notes before jailbreaking:

For iPhone 3G user who has used yellowsn0w to unlock, please hold off the upgrade to iPhone 3.0. Yellowsn0w is not compatible with iPhone 3.0 OS and can’t unlock your iPhone. You’ll have to wait for iPhone Dev team to release a new unlock tool called ultrasn0w.

Can you unlock the iPhone if it’s upgraded to iPhone 3.0?

This is the second question that I received most from some of you. And, the answer is still “it depends”. The same, it depends on the model of iPhone you’re currently using.

If you’re using iPhone 2G, there should be no problem. You can enjoy the upgrade to iPhone 3.0, as well as, the unlock.

For iPhone 3G user, iPhone Dev team will soon release an application called ultrasn0w to unlock iPhone 3.0 with baseband 4.26. But at the time I write this post, ultrasn0w is not released yet. So, please don’t upgrade to iPhone 3.0 if you need the unlock you can now use Ultrasn0w to unlock your iPhone 3G on baseband 4.26.08. For more information, please check out this post.

For iPhone 3G S user, there is no unlock solution for you yet. But iPhone Dev team is working hard to sort out the solution.

Stay tuned…

This is just a quick update that briefly give you the jailbreak status for iPhone 3.0. I will soon post up the jailbreak guide for this new iPhone OS. Stay tuned.

Hi, I’m wondering.
If I update my Jailbroken, unlocked iPhone 2g to 3.0, will I lose my contacts on my iPhone?

@iclim4, you can first backup the contact via iTunes and then sync it back after upgrade. You won’t lose it.

Thanks Simon. Am looking forward to your jailbreaking guide, although I cannot update to 3.0 yet. I’m still waiting for ultrasn0w… I heard it’s gonna be released only in July.

Anyone out there have a solution? I have a jailbreak 2GS phone working Ok yesterday with firmware 3 except YouTube. Did a hard re-set to see if that would clear it, and now I get the message in iTunes Sim card is not supported. Used Pwnage Tool again to jailbrreak but the same. Have tred to re-set it via iTunes, but no luck. Any-one with any info, or is it down to the store for a new one?

@Noel, did you install ultrasn0w? Even you have jailbroken your iPhone, you’ll need to unlock to use your iPhone with other sim cards.
