BeejiveIM is a great Instant Messenger for iPhone. Even it’s sold at US$15.99, I think it’s still worth the price if you’re a serious IM user. But same as other IM application on iPhone, BeejiveIM can’t run in background to pick up any incoming message from your friends. You have to keep the application open to stay connect with your IM buddies. Once you close the app and switch to other iPhone app, you lose the connection and appear as offline.

iPhone Doesn’t Allow Background App

You may think it’s a defect for BeejiveIM. However, this is not. The root reason is that Apple doesn’t allow any iPhone application to run in background. That’s the rule. No iPhone application can override it (except those default iPhone app such as iPod, SMS).

But it’s going to change with iPhone 3.0 and BeejiveIM 3.0…

Introduce Push Notification in iPhone OS 3.0

For the upcoming iPhone OS 3.0, this rule changes a bit. Apple still doesn’t not support a “true” background-running app but it introduces a new service known as Push Notification to allow iPhone apps to receive update even they’re not in use or while iPhone is asleep. This service is surprisingly useful for instant messaging app such as BeejiveIM. So later, even you close BeejiveIM or put iPhone in sleep mode, you’ll still be notified when your friends send you IM message. That’s really cool and that’s what BeejiveIM 3.0 will bring you.

Still not sure how BeejiveIM 3.0 works? Check out this video from iPhone Alley to see it in action.

Free Upgrade for Existing BeejiveIM User

You’d expect BeejiveIM will be released very soon once iPhone 3.0 is made publicly available. For existing BeejiveIM users, it’s a good news for you. BeejiveIM will let you to update to 3.0 for free. That’s cool.

BeejiveIM - Free Upgrade

Stay tuned. I’ll let you know when BeejiveIM is available for download.

iPhone Tip: Prior to the release of iPhone 3.0, if you got a jailbroken iPhone, you may use Backgrounder app as a workaround to put iPhone app into background.

Awesome! With Push Notification from firmware 3.0, this App will be the way it should be! I am happy they made the option to email you when you get a message until this update. That was nice of the developers. =)

@Sherwin, push notification should also work for 1st gen iPhone running iPhone 3.0. But if your iPhone 2G is jailbroken, push notification may not work.
