In preparation for iPhone 3.0 release, Apple releases an update (v8.2) of iTunes. According to Apple, iTunes v8.2 supports iPhone and iPod Touch with iPhone 3.0 update (not released yet). And, it also includes many accessibility improvement and bug fixes.

Okay, is it safe to upgrade to iTunes 8.2 for jailbreaker?

I suggest you to hold off the upgrade if you’re using jailbroken iPhone or you plan for jailbreak. As mentioned by iPhone Dev Team, iTunes 8.2 will break the use of QuickPwn and PwnageTool, as well as iPhone Tunneling Suite (ssh over usb). The incompatibility is due to the update of a low-level USB protocol that normally Apple and jailbreaker care about.

iPhone Dev team also mentioned that the incompatibility of iTunes 8.2 and QuickPwn/PwnageTool can be fixed. But you should not expect an update of QuickPwn/PwnageTool until the official release of iPhone 3.0.

So, jailbreaker. For now, you should hold off the upgrade of iTunes 8.2 and use lower version of iTunes to jailbreak. Stay tuned. I will keep you update on the status.

I screwed up. I upgraded my quicktime to 7.6.2 without realizing it would demand a new version of itunes. I knew not to get that. So then I uninstalled the new quicktime. Now Itunes will not work. My phone is a 2gen with 2.2 software JAU’d from this great site.

Yesterday my iphone 2G V2.2 suddenly got stuck at apple logo. So i downloaded the newest itunes 8.2 to restore. Restored succesfully. And upgraded to V2.2.1 and jailbroke my phone. So it worked for me.

Dear Simon,
Thanks a million for posting updates and giving us these insights. I follow you on twitter as well. Keep up the great work!!. I have a small double. I have an unloacked iPhone 2G. I didnot jailbreak it. So if I update the software to 3.0 thru iTunes, will it lock the phone again or will it work properly… I dont want to do anything without your advice.
Many thanks in advance,
Thx, Regards,
Vimal
