For those who have accidentally upgraded your iPhone 3G to firmware 2.2.1, this is a great news for you.

As you may know, by upgrading the iPhone 3G to firmware 2.2.1, Apple also updates the baseband version of iPhone to 2.30.03. Presently, this baseband version is not supported by yellowsn0w, the free unlock software for iPhone 3G. Thus, if you have accidentally upgrade to firmware 2.2.1, there is no software-based unlock problem to unlock your iPhone 3G.

I have received lots of emails asking about how you can unlock iPhone 3G with baseband 2.30.00. Obviously, I told you there was no simple solution. But today, here is an answer you’re searching for.

Today, the iPhone hacking community releases an easy-to-use baseband downgrade solution called 3G Fuzzyband Downgrader. By using this downgrader, you can downgrade any baseband version (2.30.00 – 4.26.08) back to 2.28.00. That means you can then use yellowsn0w to unlock iPhone 3G.

The 3G Fuzzyband Downgrader can be downloaded via Cydia (BigBoss source) and it is absolutely free. But make sure you’re using firmware 2.2.1, which is one of the requirements to use this downgrader. On top of that, the downgrader only supports Bootloader v5.8. Not sure what version of bootloader you’re running on? No worry. The downgrader application will automatically detect the baseband version for you.

The app is extremely simple and intuitive. What you have to do is to launch the downgrader and tap the “Downgrade” button. It’ll then verify your bootloader version and proceed with the downgrade.

Once you have the baseband downgraded, you can use yellowsn0w to unlock the iPhone 3G.

Okay, you may have one concern… Does this app really work? I have browsed through a number of forums and many adventurous iPhone users have responded with positive feedbacks (it just works!) for this downgrader application. So, even with the great feedbacks, I still have to warn you: Use it at your own risk and make sure you only run the app on iPhone 2.2.1.

Anyways, I hope this piece of great news will help those iPhone 3G user with firmware 2.2.1 to unlock the iPhone. Please feel free to leave comment and share your experience on this downgrader application.

I already have firmware 2.2.1 with baseband 02.30.03 on my iPhone (I did not accidently upgraded it, it was already there). Can I still use this software to unlock my iPhone?

Please respond.

I have almost everything correct but i need to use the fuzzy downgrader but i can’t because i have the wrong bootloader version. what can i do ?

@James, as mentioned in the post, the downgrader only works on bootloader 5.8. For other bootloader versions, there is currently no way to downgrade the baseband.

damn it.. i really cant believe this.
i just got an iphone, on may 15th..
factory sealed (and locked)
the first mistake I did, was to plug it, the itunes popped up and I decided to update it..

well, after that, I realized I had to unlock it (duh) but now I cant, because fuzz downgrader only accepts up to bootloader 5.8, and mine is 5.9

ohh boy.. what should I do ?
probably put this damn iphone in the box, and wait till someone comes up with a 5.9 bootloader downgrader.

Hi Simon, Others,

Is it possible and safe to downgrade bootloader version, as mentioned by Jayminho? If yes, from where to download ziPhone? Is there any step to step guide to use this software?

Please advice!

Thanks.

i am acctually emailing the guys at fuzzyband downgrader.
because what I did, “was by accident”
I dont know if it is a safe method, if it only worked for me.. or what the hell happened.

I will break it down here;

1- on may 5th I got an Iphone 3G, SEALED AND LOCKED. (just like in US, only some specific carriers in brazil have the right to sell iphones) – my carrier IS NOT ONE OF THOSE.

2- what I first did, was to plug and update the iphone through itunes software, after updating to the latest version, I kept getting the blocked screen and on itunes would show up (as far as I remembered) “you sim was not recognized” or something like that

3- I went on the internet, and started to look for methods to unlock the iphone.. after a couple of hours, I learned about jailbreak/quickpwn, I did it, my iphone got unlocked, BUT MY CARRIER (on top of the iphone said NO SERVICE) .. still trying to figure out what was wrong, I learned that I had to use something called yellowstone, I did.. nothing happened, kept reading… I found out about the baseband update issue, and I should downgrade it using a app. called fuzzyband, I downloaded and installed through cylia. got the msg saying it couldnt downgrade because my bootloader was above 5.8.

4- i got pissed and started looking a way to downgrade my bootloader, so I found this ziphone software, http://www.ziphone.org , i downloaded it. run.. and there is an option on it, called DOWNGRADE BOOTLOADER. I clicked, it appears a msg saying “restoring..” it was taking too long, I realized it had frozen. I killed the process, unplugged the iphone, plugged the iphone back, the itunes screen popped up automatically as usual, and I went to the option of “restore my iphone” suddenly, I got a msg. YOU SIM HAS BEEN UNLOCKED. done.

since then,
I HAVENT INSTALLED CYLIA (i am afraid of something to happen)
I HAVENT JAILBROKEN
i am running the latest firmware version, updated by the itunes.
it is like the iphone had been legally unlocked.

i have no idea what happened.
but give it a try.
i think, the worst case scenario. is that, you might lose your applications and agenda, but since I had nothing on the iphone and had nothing to lose, I tried all options, and the one I described above, worked.

wish you all luck

hi pls. help me, my iphone 3g was supposedly running on 2.1, then i uploaded some application via cydia, it got frozen for the entire night. In the morning i turned on to itunes and push the update button, meaning updating to 3.1, now the itunes logo just keeps on popping on the iphone screen and nothing more, and just like youve experience “pls. insert a valid sim” message always displays on itunes. can you teach me step by step on how you unlocked your phone. and by way are you running on 3.1 now ?

Hello everyone,

Quick question to Jayminho: could you perform a quick “autopsy” of your “legally unlocked by accident” iPhone? for exemple what’s your baseband now? any trouble making and receiving phone calls? Because as far as I know, Ziphone software was made for Iphone V1 and NOT 3G and if you mess up the bootloader, the iphone could end up missing its phone ability.
Thanks

21 jay May 25, 2009 at 2:30 am

im not having problems either to make or receive calls , and my baseband is the latest, this is for sure, because i update through itunes. and on the general settings, firmware says .03

I think, people are too scared to try (no , im not refering to you teletext, dont worry)

im saying that, in general, I go to iphone communities, and see people who got this thing for fucking 2 years now, and still cant do shit.

i am far from being a tech savvy.
and in less than a month now
i have unlocked, locked, re-unlocked, tested the shit out of everything available.
managed to unlock all, and have a iphone working flawless now.

christ sake people.
just try.
dont await for miraculous solutions over months and months.

I have posted this on one of Simon’s other blog postings too. First of all, let me state that I have no affiliation with the “2009 Gevey 3g PLUS 2″ product.

I’ve recently jailbroke & unlocked two 3G Iphones with bootloader 6.0 and baseband 2.30. I have basically taken the steps from Simon’s blog, however I was not aware of the bootloader issue at the time nor about the “3G Fuzzyband Downgrader” software (wouldn’t have helped me anyway). So, I took a different solution for the unlock part and bought on Ebay the “2009 Gevey 3g PLUS 2″ turbo sim for $ 9.00 from one of the many sellers. I was very skeptical about the turbo sim, but decided to give it a try and it worked as a charm with T-Mobile USA and a Dutch provider called Telfort (roaming in the USA via T-Mobile).

p.s. Be sure that you buy an original “2009 Gevey 3g PLUS 2″ turbo sim. I read horror stories about non-original ones, like not fitting in the sim slot or being stuck in the sim slot. Buy/used it at your own risk, it worked for me.

Happy unlocking. Regards,
Ronald

why not just wait for ultrasnow that the iphone dev team is working on? it looks like they are extremely close according to their blog. the people that made claims on this thread is just not credible, as they can’t produce a simple step by step guidance that is repeatable. The whole world is waiting for how to do this, if they know how to do it, they can either be famous or rich…

Jay is scam. Its nt fukn pos wat u hav said. Even the iphone dev team wud confirm dat. Hes jus arousing false hopes to the unlucky ones like us who have a higher bootloader. Sorry to say guys. But so far there is no solution to unlock 5.9 or higher bootloader.
