Skype 1.0.2 Does not Support Jailbroken iPhone?

by Simon Ng on April 16, 2009

Skype Jailbreak WarningSkype Inc. has rolled out an update for Skype iPhone app. If you have downloaded and installed the v1.0.2 update, you probably be surprised by a warning message when you first launch Skype:

This version of Skype is only supported on unmodified iPhone OS 2.2

Whew! Does that mean Skype does no longer work on jailbroken iPhone? At first, I really thought that the update prevents jailbroken iPhone from using Skype.

But the fact is it’s just a warning.

As tested out the update by calling other buddies on Skype, you can still use Skype 1.0.2 on jailbroken iPhone. Yes, it still works.

I’m not sure the exact reason why Skype put up such warning. One reason may be due to the Skype crash issue on jailbroken iPhone that I have discussed earlier. To fix the issue, please check out this post.

So, what’s new in this update? Skype v1.0.2 comes with several bug fixes:

  • Improved support for calling phone numbers without country code
  • Improved error handling when making calls to landlines and mobiles
  • Resolved problem with new account registration, which caused customers to be redirected to an incorrect web page, when making a purchase
  • Fixed a problem, which caused the application to crash, when tapping a contact image (avatar) within a chat

To download the Skype v1.0.2, you can click on this direct iTunes link.

If you have experienced any issue after updating the Skype app, please do leave us comment and share the issue.

The warning only appears once on a jailbroken phone.

If you had installed voipover3g to use skype over 3g, 1.0.2 (at the present time) does not allow this.

Before you update to 1.0.2, go into itunes, right click Skype, and “show in finder”. Copy Skype.ipa to your desktop– or compress it or something.

If you want to remove 1.0.2, then delete it from itunes and from the iphone. Drag the “skype.ipa” you backed up into you “applications” in itunes, and press “SYNC”.

It will re-install the old version of skype on your phone.

1.0.2 works on jailbroken iPhones via 3G as well if you have voipover3g installed! At least on my iPhone.

Jailbroken iPhone 3G, 2.2.1 pwned firmware.

I’ve updated my skype app to 1.0.2, gotten this message, but instead of working fine, it crashes around 15 seconds after launch, at first I could make a call and it would give me a “call failed” error, but now it just crashes. I’m not sure if this has anything to do with the MobileSubstrate bug, but it worked fine before this update. I’ll try to post back with any updates, also if anyone else has had his problem and has fixed it I’d appreciate any help.
