How to Use Skype over 3G/EDGE on iPhone

by Simon Ng on April 10, 2009

Skype on iPhone - Wifi onlyHave you tried out Skype for iPhone that was released in early Apr? Skype for iPhone is a great application that lets you make free voice calls internationally over Skype. But there is a limitation. Due to certain reason, Skype restricts you to make calls over Wifi network only. By default, you can’t use Skype over 3G or EDGE network.

So, is there any way to break this rule and use Skype over 3G/EDGE?

The answer is YES if you’re using a jailbroken iPhone. Simply fire up Cydia and search for these two applications:

  • Mobile Substrate
  • VoIPover3G

Mobile Substrate for Skype FixVoIPover3G - Cydia

By installing these two packages, your iPhone will fake Skype to make call over 3G and even EDGE network (see the “E” in the below pic). From now on, you can make free calls anywhere with your friend on Skype. Cool, right?

For those who are still considering jailbreaking, this is another reason why you need to jailbreak. To check out the details about jailbreak, you can read more about “Why jailbreak? Top 5 Reason to jailbreak iPhone”.

@Anup, base on my test so far, it works and is quite stable. You can also give it a shot. If you find any issue, you may just uninstall the voipover3G package.

@Azbook, I haven’t tried it out yet. But I think with the latest version of MobileSubstrate, it probably works on iPhone 3GS.
