As you know, Skype for iPhone has been released and available for free (except Canada) on App Store. Probably, you have installed it and are enjoying it to make free phone call to friends in other countries.
But, if you’re using jailbroken iPhone, you may experience crash issues during logon or while making phone call.
From what I have tested, you’ll be able to launch Skype on jailbroken iPhone. However, once you tap on “Skype name” to type in the username, the application crashes and goes back to iPhone home screen.
Thanks again to Jay Freeman, that he already released a fix to resolve the crash issue on Skype. As mentioned, the crash issue is due to a Cydia package called Mobile Substrate. You may not aware that the package is installed on iPhone. But this Cydia package is used by VoiceOverIP, Backgrounder, Winterboard applications.
To fix the crash issue, you can simply go to Cydia and upgrade Mobile Substrate to v0.9.2805-1 (or newer). This version is fully compatible with Skype and should resolve the crash issue.

I’m using an iPhone (jailbroken, Yellowsnow) version 2.1 The app just boots but once it has booted it gets stuck and doesn’t respond to anything. Once in a while one it become a bit active and one can go through the menu but that is about it.
On a 2.2 iPhone over here it works well after installing the Mobile substrate update.
Is there a problem with the 2.1 firmware, should it be upgraded to 2.2?

@rehman, please check if you have any of the following applications that may not be compatible with skype.
- IntelliScreen
- mCoolPhone
- MobileHook
- MobileLog/iLog
i have uninstall mobilelog and now its working thank u simon
Hi,
I have none of the above applications or of those mentioned in the note in CydiaNews installed and my Skype just hangs for 10-20 seconds after clicking the call button and then returns to the home screen.
Now… Do I have to uninstall EACH package and see which one is causing the hangs??? And if SO MANY extensions don’t use this mobile substrate then maybe it should not be used or skype should not use it as well???
Regards,
bm
Do I really need to uninstall each package from Cydia or just those which are loaded while Skype is started? Like Notifier. I have many like file system viewers, file viewers, eLibrary, timetables of local transport and so on… As I understand it correctly they do not interfere with Skype just being installed, or do they??
Regards,
bm
Well… Removed many of packages EVEN the mobilesubstrate package itself and Skype still doesn’t work…
Skype is not working on jailbroken OS 2.1… for me…
bm
that’s ILOG !!!
uninstall and have fun
Hi, I have a jailbroken unlocked iphone 3G. I downloaded skype from the app store and i updated the mobile substrate through cydia. I have plenty of skype credits. I don’t have any of the applications you mentioned above yet whenever I try to make a call with skype it keeps telling me the call has failed. I am putting a 1 after the plus sign and it fails regardless. I can’t figure out what could be going wrong here. Can anyone help me?
doesn’t work for me. i don’t have clippy, intelliscreen, mCoolPhone, MobileHook, MobileLog/iLog, … Skype starts up, but crashes after few seconds… Even with the latest version of MobileSubstrate it still doesn’t work.
I removed Intellscreen and now Skype works perfect!
