Icy for iPhone: An Alternative to Cydia

IcyDo you think Cydia is slow? As a regular user of Cydia, I agree. For most of the time, it takes over 30s (sometimes even a minute) to launch Cydia. Even though Cydia offers some great jailbreak applications, it’s a bit annoying for its slowness.

RipDev, the development teams behind Installer app, plans to challenge Cydia by offering a new iPhone installer that is much faster and lightweight than Cydia. And, it’s called Icy:

Icy is our take on the freeware package manager that uses APT repositories to install and remove packages available in another free iPhone installer application, Cydia. The goal was to create a fast, lightweight and more slick solution that is easy and cool to use.

Icy has just been released and it is designed to be compatible with all Cydia packages. That means, Icy can read and download any packages available on Cydia.

To learn more about Icy, check out the below video:

To install Cydia, you can add a new source http://apt.ripdev.com and then install Icy from the Packaging category. Icy is completely free for download. So, why not try it out?

hey simon, thanks for introducing icy. are there any useful apps in icy which u’d recommend? would wanna see what useful stuffs there are before i install it, my phone memory has been too overburdened. maybe u’d wanna cover some of those useful apps in this blog in future? thanks!

@Alex, actually Icy is a Cydia-like application that lets you download and install cydia applications. So, no matter you’re using Cydia or Icy, you are accessing the same repositories to download application.

BTW, thanks for your suggestion. I’ll try to cover those applications.

hi simon…i know this is off topic…but has clippy become a trial software ?? just woke up this morning to try to copy the link from safari…and it came up with a message ” clippy trial over..” any suggestions ?

    • Simon Ng April 1, 2009 at 6:06 pm #

      @Teddy,

Clippy is still in beta, so it’s preset to be expired in a period of time. You just need to head to Cydia and update to the latest version. That should resolve the issue.

@simon, i installed icy. it’s quite bad, in my opinion. when i tried to uninstall it, it “threatened” that uninstalling it will screw up iphoneOS and cydia! i left it alone, don’t wanna do a restore becos of it, i just used poof to hide the icon. any idea how to uninstall it safely?

icy released an update. i updated it and then successfully uninstalled it! will wait for icy to be more stable before using it again. it definitely has potential given its small size and quick launching.

@Alex, thanks for the update. I agree Icy doesn’t look right but it’s much faster than Cydia.

Cydia gives a creepy warning like that one too when you try to un-install it… much like synaptic would give you in ubunu. It is just the software making sure you aren’t mistakenly removing your package manager.

Does anyone know if ICY still has compatibility problems with Cydia? Cydia has got to be there because it’s loaded with so many custom firmwares and jailbreaks, so it’s still king of the mountain, but for a while ICY and Cydia would have a horrible row if you put them on the same iPhone. It seems that the problem has been cleared up, but I’d like to get some verification if anyone knows. thanks!

Sorry to say but it looks the same as cydia, but just probably faster. Trust is Cydia is really obsolete now.(which means so would icy).

Rock is the future, its fast(probably to par with icy if not better), and is very colorful, all apps have its own pics, reviews/comments on all things there. Same repo as cydia+rock only ones. Imports all cydia(maybe icy too) apps/addons(does not port your manual entered repos, so you have to redo those)
Lets you back up all JB apps/addons to your rock account, so if you restore you just login and it will download everything you have. and alot more!

    Cydia can’t find the repository?

  15. Graham April 24, 2011 at 1:52 am #

    Hello,
Everyone who was wondering why it wasn’t working (like Gothminion,) RiPDev no longer exists. You can get Icy for the newest devices and firmwares from Chromium Dev Team. Just add the repo: apt.robinofree.com. Only if you own a iPad look up Infini-Dev.

I want to get all the sweet stuff that Cydia offers. But I don’t want to jailbreak my iPod, because apparently its like illegal and stuff, so yeah. I mostly just want iFile. Is there anyway that you could provide that without having to jailbreak it and such?
