When you launch an iPhone application, it actually stays in the system memory and takes up some amount of resources. Probably you assume that the application is gone when you press the Home button to go back to home screen. But actually it’s not. That iPhone application will still stay in the memory, so it can be launched quickly for subsequent access. This is a design consideration but the downside is the unused application holds up some sort of system resources.
So, how can you completely quit an iPhone application?
It’s simple. When you decide to quit an application, simply press and hold the Home button for more than five seconds. Keep holding until you see the application is closed. This way will ensure the application is completely quit and free up more memory.

i did try but after 5 secs the voice control appeared instead of closing the app.
