iPhone OS 3.0 is Coming… Sneak Preview on Mar 17th

by Simon Ng on March 14, 2009

This is a big news! We are all waiting for the next release of iPhone OS. On Mar 17th, Apple will hold a special media event at its Cupertino premises to give a preview of iPhone firmware 3.0 and show off some of the advanced features.

iPhone 3.0

As usual, Apple does not disclose any further details about the firmware update. We do not know what exactly will come with this 3.0 OS. But I expect the update is going to be huge.

According to Boy Genius Report, it claimed two features will quite certainly be incorporated in the new OS:

  • MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) – Send photos via SMS
  • Tethering via Bluetooth and USB – Use iPhone as 3G modem to share internet connection with your laptop

I’ll be glad to see these features. And, on top of these, here is my wish list for iPhone 3.0:

  • Copy & Paste – Though Clippy and ℏClipboard are doing a great job, I expect Apple to offer a complete solution for copy & paste that I can easily copy text from Safari and paste it elsewhere.
  • Background task (or what so-called “Push Notification”) – Let application to run in background
  • Sync song & photo via Wifi or bluetooth
  • Enhance the SMS application – Just let me forward SMS and create template. That’s enough for me.
  • Landscape mode for SMS and Email – Why not let me type in landscape orientation?

Anyway, this is just my guess on iPhone 3.0. Let’s wait for a few more days and see what Apple will show us. I’ll keep you update on this special event. Also keep in mind that this is just a preview of iPhone 3.0, it’s not very likely the actual release will come this month.

By the way, what feature do you want to see in this update? Feel free to leave comment and share with us.

My guess is that 3.0 will close all the holes that allow jailbreaking the iPhone, that yellowsn0w will cease to work under 3.0 and that if the user wants to tether, they will have to pay A&T a hefty monthly charge to do so.

I will not give up jailbreaking and apps like Cycorder and iPhone modem in exchange for MMS and landscape e-mail.

Not every new release is worth installing . . . and this may be one to pass up until we find out not only what it adds, but what it takes away as well.

@Norm, you’re right. I believe iPhone Dev Team will still figure a way to jailbreak iPhone 3.0 even Apple closes all holes. It’s expected jailbroken iPhone will be required to jailbreak again for upgrading to firmware 3.0. So, you can still use the lovely Cycorder and iPhone modem applications.

Can owners with current OS upgrade to 3.0 at no charge?

I’m quite certain the Apple will not charge anything for the 3.0 update to the iPhone. They very much (IMHO) want to stop the threats posed by the Cydia store.

Let’s just hope they allow us to NOT install the update and stay at 2.X if we choose to do so.

I concern that 2G iPhone (8G) is not enought to support 3.0, do you recommend to change a new 3G iPhone now?

@Ada,

Other than faster data transmission, one thing that you’ll definitely miss out is GPS. There is another rumor that Apple will rollout “Turn by turn” GPS navigation application in iPhone 3.0. Not sure it’ll become true or not, anyhow, iPhone 2G will not be able to benefit from this app.

But, if you do not really need GPS and faster download speed, you can still stay with the 2g iPhone and wait for Apple to release another generation of iPhone.
