Apple Released iTunes 8.1 – Faster, Smarter, Better

by Simon Ng on March 13, 2009

iTunes 8.1Apple has just updated iTunes to version 8.1. Advertised as faster, smarter and better iTunes, Apple claimed the new version of iTunes is much responsive particularly when working with large libraries, browsing iTunes store, sync with iPhone or iPod and photo optimization for syncing.

Other than the speed improvements, iTunes 8.1 comes with other enhancements and bug fixes. Here are the complete list, according to Apple:

iPod Shuffle - 3rd generation• Supports syncing with iPod shuffle (3rd generation).
• Allows friends to request songs for iTunes DJ.
• Adds Genius sidebar for your Movies and TV Shows.
• Improves performance when downloading iTunes Plus songs.
• Provides AutoFill for manually managed iPods.
• Allows CDs to be imported at the same sound quality as iTunes Plus.
• Includes many accessibility improvements.
• Allows iTunes U and the iTunes Store to be disabled separately using Parental Controls.

So, can we use iTunes 8.1 for jailbreak iPhone?

Base on the early responses from a few iPhone users, we can pair QuickPwn or PwnageTool with iTunes 8.1 for jailbreak. But if you’re worried, hold off the upgrade and stick with iTunes 8.0.2.

So….I have an already jailbroken iphone (thanks simon), done with QuickPwn….. how will upgrading to the new version of itunes effect my device? Or do you only need to worry when re-jailbreaking or jailbreaking for the first time? Any ideas people?

i think it’s better to hold off the upgrade first, until the dev team confirms it’s fine. i wouldn’t want to risk anything, in case apple is planning something evil… :S

Alex has a valid point, never know what could be in it. I’ve had my phone jailbroken for some time and several iTunes updates have come out. Each time updating with no issues. The concern is with the firmware updates for the iPhone that you need to wait until the dev team has ok’d. With news of iPhone OS 3.0 coming out soon, that is what you should wait for. When you plug in your iPhone, iTunes should prompt you about a firmware upgrade for iPhone that you can refuse. But as Alex said, might hold off :)

Some time has passed since Apple released it’s iTunes 8.1 update but I cannot find any official “all is clear for update” or “do not update”; not by Dev-Team or anyone else… Am I missing something?

@skylight, I’ve just tried out the jailbreak and upgrade an iPhone from firmware 1.1.1 to firmware 2.2 with iTunes 8.1. It works perfectly.

I’m not sure if iPhone Dev team will make an official announcement on that. If you’re still worried about jailbreaking via iTunes 8.1. Then stick with iTunes 8.0.2.

Thanks Simon. I took the plunge and updated to iTunes 8.1 on my iMac. I can confirm there was no problem at all syncing and hope there is no problem when I need to jailbreak in the future. I’ll refrain from updating on iTunes on my MacBook Pro, just in case. BTW what is that landscape behind you – looks very familiar but too small to really make out…

@Skylight,

I think there should be no problem for jailbreaking on iTunes 8.1. But appreciate you can come back and share with other your jailbreak experience.

BTW, I took the photo at a Greece island, Santorini.

Hi, I am in a bit of trouble. I am trying to unlock the iphone 2g but have just downloaded itunes 8.1 today. Now I don’t know how to get past the first step as it asks me whether I have an AT&T account or make a new account. I am with Tmobile. Please advise!
