On Feb 24, Amazon delivered an updated version of Kindle, its flagship wireless reading device that tries to take over the digital book market (Personally, I’m very eager to buy one). Today, Amazon brings us a Kindle application for iPhone that lets you access to thousands of Kindle titles.
The Kindle application is free of charge and now available for download at App Store (via this iTune link). With Kindle application, you can use iPhone or iPod Touch to read Kindle-formatted books that are purchased from web or your Kindle devices. As of today, the Kindle store has over 240,000 books available and for most of the titles, they are selling at $9.99. For most books, Amazon offers a sample chapter for free. So, you can try before you buy.
Once you purchase a book, it can be shared between iPhone and the Kindle device (if you have one). Amazon also introduces a service called whispersync, that keeps track of the latest page you’ve read in any given book across both a Kindle and iPhone. That means, you switch reading between Kindle and iPhone without losing your location.
To download and purchase a book, you should first register an account with Amazon. And there’s a catch for the Kindle app for iPhone that you can’t purchase a book directly inside the app. Instead, you can only purchase a book by using Safari.
I’ve just download the application and my first impression of the app is not so impressive. I will further write up a review in late post. Stay tuned.
