5-Row QWERTY Keyboard for iPhone

by Simon Ng on February 27, 2009

Do you find troublesome to switch to numeric keyboard using the “123″ key? KennyTM, the developer of hClipboard, has developed a 5-Row QWERTY keyboard for iPhone. This tweak adds an additional row of numbers over the existing keyboard, so that you can type number directly, which is quite similar to a standard QWERTY keyboard.

On the top that, by hitting SHIFT key, the number row will change to the equivalent symbol that you can type exclamation mark, dollar sign, blanket symbols directly. Cool, right?

So, what happen to the “123″ keyboard? For now, when you tap “123″ keyboard and switch to the numeric keyboard, all the keys are re-organized and gives you a numeric keypad. Try hitting the SHIFT key, it’ll give you keys such as directional keys and tab character.

To install this hack, you should have a jailbroken iPhone. The application is available for download freely via Cydia. Once you have installed, you should be able to use the 5-Row keyboard. But if you find that it didn’t work, you can go to Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> International Keyboards and enable “5 Row QWERTY keyboard” manually.

The keyboard tweak is really great and minimizes my time to switch between numeric and alphabetical keyboards. Probably Apple should consider to revamp its default keyboard in the next version of firmware update. What do you think?

It does not work for me. I configured it just like the picture in settings but I always see the same old keyboard. The same thing happened with the Dvorak keyboard. Is there some pacakage that has to be installed before these like IKeyX or something. I see these show up in the IkeyX menu.

thanks

@pjsz, you’ll need to tap the “globe” button to switch to the 5-row keyboard. Did you try it?

the globe is on the keyboard itself. But if you have 3.0, looks like this does not work. I’m a bit irritated.

I installed the app as directed above, but nothing changed. I even tried to force it by switching off the stock keyboard, but to no effect. I even had the same problem when I installed the similar “5 row Arabic keyboard”. I think the problem is with OS3 (compatibility issue)!?

On the other hand, I am looking for a text prediction keyboard. Does anybody know any?

so is this issue ever going to be fixed? Or do we just assume the creatoer has given up on it?

This fails to work on os 3.x
there is no globe to click on so there’s no way to switch over to
