iPhone 3G Jailbreak Guide Updated for Firmware 2.2.1

by Simon Ng on February 8, 2009

pwned_pineapple1Thanks for waiting. Here is the updated jailbreak guide for iPhone 3G firmware 2.2.1.

Complete Guide: Jailbreak iPhone 3G 2.2 using QuickPwn (For Windows) [Updated for firmware 2.2.1]

As a reminder, you shouldn’t upgrade to firmware 2.2.1 if you plan to unlock iPhone 3G. Till now, the unlock solution “yellowsn0w” is only applicable for firmware 2.2.

Help! I accidentally upgraded my iphone 3g to version 2.2.1 and firmware 02.30.03, what can I do to unlock it, please help!!!!

@Michelle, sorry to hear about that. There is currently no software solution to unlock iPhone 3G with baseband 2.30.03. You’ll have to wait until iPhone Dev team releases an update for yellowsn0w. I’ll keep you update on that.

Thanks, please do keep me updated. Do you have any ideas how long it might be before the new update release, any guesses???
You think it might be days, weeks, or months?

@Fo2sh, there is currently no way to downgrade from 2.2.1 to 2.2. I haven’t tried out “rebel sim” but it claims it works with firmware 2.2.1. You may give it a shot. Or you’ll wait for iPhone Dev Team to work out the software unlock solution.

7 Fo2sh February 28, 2009 at 10:39 pm

actually…there is a way to downgrade FIRMWARE ONLY FROM 2.2.1 TO 2.2 NOT BASEBAND…download first ipsw 2.2 firmware file for iphone 3g…connect itunes and press shift+restore, browse the file you’ve downloaded…you will see an error 1013 before finishing restoring…don’t worry the iphone is now running on 2.2(your iphone’s screen should have a usb and itunes logo)…click ok and eject from itunes then open quickpwn 2.2.5…this time it will tell you to press home and power button for a couple of seconds before opening…continue through jailbreak procedures as usual and there you have your iphone running on firmware 2.2 but with the baseband 02.30 you will have no network however there is a rebel sim that works for iphone 3g and will unlock most of the networks…i’ve seen a tutorial with vodafone that works perfectly…by the way i’m on windows.waiting for replies.

@inonefly, as you’re already in baseband 2.30.03, I suggest you to hold off the jailbreak if you still want to use the unlock solution from iPhone Dev team. There is no guarantee you can unlock the iPhone using yellowsn0w in future. I’ll keep you update on the news and you may subscribe to this blog via this link.

Hi Simon,

I have a iphone 3g with firmware version 2.2 and it has already been unlocked. I want to jailbreak it however, is it wise to update the firmware from 2.2 to 2.2.1 and then jailbreak it? or should I just jailbreak it with my current firmware version 2.2? Please advise.

Hope you can give me an answer ASAP.

Reply

26 Simon Ng April 9, 2009 at 8:21 am

@RL, do you mean your iPhone is a factory-unlocked one? Or it’s unlocked by using software? If you’re not sure, I suggest you stick with firmware 2.2. By upgrading to firmware 2.2.1, it will also upgrade the baseband of iPhone to a version that cannot be unlocked.

Simon,

Thank you for your quick response. The iphone that I have was already unlock when I bought it. Unlock in the sense that I can use it with a simcard in Dubai. However, last night my friend upgraded the firmware to 2.2.1 and jailbreak it. Afterwards, I didn’t have signal anymore. He then downgraded but it still wouldn’t work. Please help me.

Thank you in advance for you help.

I read in your other post that http://www.simonblog.com/2009/01/31/iphone-dev-team-says-yes-firmware-221-jailbreak-available/ that I would be able to unlock it if I am a Mac user? Does this mean that as long as I have a mac computer I will be able to unlock it?

After updating my 3G I got the same problem: SW 2.2.1 + modem firmware 02.30.03.
Is there any timeframe when the dev team will be able to overcome the baseband issue? Will there be a solution for 2.2.1 at all as the new SW 3.0 will be released in a few weeks? However, when the 3G was launched it took more than 6 months to unlock/jailbreak it.

Hate the thought of using a sim adapter…

Hi Everyone!

I found a solution. I bought a turbo sim (Gevey 3G). It works with my iphone now with a version 2.2.1 and baseband 02.30.03 and now I can make calls. Yipee! Try looking online to purchase since I purchased mine here in Dubai.

Goodluck!

I had Gevey 3G before.
It didnt work very well in Russia (lost EDGE connection, took ages to login into the network). However, I went to Germany on holidays and it worked fine there. At least for the 2 weeks I spent there!

Hi Chris, No, just used the software myself and like Roson “it does was it says on the tin” plus you get some bonus software + full updates as Apple continue there firmware upgrades.
Also you can get a hardware unlock solution called 3G Storm No Cut TurboSim from eBay UK

Tried and tested both and are fully working.

@Bls, you can use 3G Fuzzyband Downgrader to downgrade baseband from 2.30.03 to 2.28.00. Then you can use yellowsn0w to unlock iPhone 3G.

Hi Bls, Just an update to my previous comments:-
You can use a software unlock on any iphone 3g as long as you haven’t ungraded the bootloader above v5.8 or have a iphone from new with bootloader above that ie. v5.9.
If your bootloader is v5.9 or above the only solution is a turbo sim which can be purchased from ebay for as little as £7.00 + p&p
Hope this clarifies this for you.
Best wishes.

Hey.. i jailbroken my version 2.2.1 modem 2.30.03 with bootloader 06.02 with quickpwn and everything went fine except: the carrier settings shows (null)(null).

Will i still be able to plug in a turbosim and use the phone?

What does this carrier (null)(null) means?

Reply

58 Simon Ng May 19, 2009 at 9:33 pm

@darkkennedy, at the mean time, there is no soft-unlock solution for iPhone with baseband 2.30.03 and bootloader 6.02. That’s why you cannot connect to the carrier. You may try out those sim-based unlock solution (e.g. turbosim, rebelsim, etc) for the unlock.

Reply

59 darkkennedy May 20, 2009 at 8:53 am

Yes i FULLY understand that there is no soft unlock for the baseband 2.30.03. i did not try to connect to the carrier!

MY question is

1. Now my iphone shows carrier = (null)(null). If i use a turbosim would it be able to detect a network?

2. If the phone does not detect a network when a turbosim is used, ot might not be the turbo sim fault as i am thinking that the carrier=(null)(null) is the issue to begin with.

3. IS this carrier = (null)(null) anything to be worried about?

4. I have read up on certain forum threads that says if i ACTIVATE the phone with legal contract sim before jailbreaking it, the carrier would not = (null)(null). that is why i think there is a problem with my phone having carrier = (null)(null).

Is there any way to ACTIVATE without the contract sim?

(ACTIVATE = bypass the slide to emergency page making the phone think it has been used a original sim card and connected to itunes to register phone. you know first time activation thing. I understand this is not unlock)

Thanks!

60 Excalibre May 20, 2009 at 7:16 pm

Hi Darkkennedy,
Q: IS this carrier = (null)(null) anything to be worried about?
A: Yes, the jailbreak wasn’t completely successful (should show unable to connect to network & (No Service)
Q: Is there any way to ACTIVATE without the contract sim?
A: Yes, use a PAYG sim (you can get these free on the web)
Next Q: How do you fix this?
A: Use iTunes to restore phone, if that doesn’t work use iTunes to force a full upgrade (details on this are all over the web), you will need o2 sim in the phone so that it is reactivated once the upgrade is complete.
Then jailbreak the phone again (make sure you do not select (Tick) the unlock box.
Insert your Turbo Sim and Operator Sim and wait for it to detect your network.
Hope this helps.

hey excalibre,

I am in Japan and my phone is a japan iphone and it is locked to Softbank japan. I guess pay as you go sim is out of the question for me right?

So just to confirm, the phone needs to be activated before i jailbreak it?

Is it possible to activate my phone using a friends legit simcard? Is it a must to connect to the computer through itunes to activate? Can i activate just by putting in the simcard?

One more thing, i am using quickpwn 2.25 to jailbreak and i do not see any option to not select unlock. Can you clarify? What software are you using to jailbreak the iphone?

Reply

62 Simon Ng May 22, 2009 at 10:20 pm

@darkkennedy, don’t worry about activation. QuickPwn will help you activate the iPhone. And, for iPhone 3G, you’ll need to jailbreak the iPhone with QuickPwn first. Then use yellowsn0w (download from cydia) to unlock it.

Hi,

Good Day!

Hey simon, your good on this thread.. this blog help a lot to others that having the same problem..carrier null null (no service)

a lot of people asking you how to solve this problem and i believe you still havent yet find the solution..

I post because i want to help..

I got the same story, after update the firmware, i got carrier null null at the network..my sim cannot be recognized by the iphone, btw i got 2.2.1 firmware and 6.02 bootloader and 2.30 base band.. iphone 3g (as you’ve said this cannot be unlock)

for the users have the same problem (carrier null null) you dont have to use rebelsim, turbo sim etc to use your iphone after this..

here’s how i did it..

you need this requirements:
itunes 8.1
firmware you want to upload to your iphone (2.2.1 / 2.2)
quickpwn 2.2.5

Follow this method…

– Start iTunes 8.1 for WINDOWS ONLY! i have no MAC so i dont know if this is possible with MAC users..
– Connect iPhone 3G via USB cable
– Put the iphone into DFU mode (hold home + power for 10 seconds, continue holding home for 10 seconds)
– At the restore screen in itunes “Shift-Click” Restore button, choose the firmware you want to install 2.2 or 2.2.1
– finish the entire processes, “Error 1013″, should pop-up, cancel it and immediately close itunes before it tries to connect to the itunes store!

Note: if you got error message like 1011, 1013, 1015, just ignore them, its actually the firmware 2.2.1/2.2 is already successfully installed.

But if you encountered with error message like 1601, 1602, 1600 or anything else then try putting the iPhone into DFU mode again and try again. these means you did not achieved the correct method on how to go to DFU mode

– Open QuickPwn 2.2.5. it will say “must hold power and home for 15 SECS, then press power for 2 seconds” but hold the power button+home for 10 SECS ONLY then release the hone and power button then hold the power button for 2 second..
– Click OK and exit out of QuickPwn!(do not go thru quickpwn – no need!)
– Your iphone will show a black emergency screen with itunes logo on it. (after you press the hold botton (2 Sec)
– open itunes or wait for itself to open automatically.iTunes will take some time to recognize the device and connect to the apple store to unlock your iphone, “it will say your iphone has been unlocked congratulations..
– Your iphone will say “slide to unlock” do it, iTunes then prompts if you want to restore from a backup or it up as a new iPhone. Select new.
– Now you can use quickpwn if you wish to jailbreak it!

Just in case still no network after these steps: (waiting for activation after 10 mins minimum)

1. Follow all steps detailed in this guide.
2. Connect iPhone to iTunes.
3. Set up as new iPhone.
4. Wait for iPhone to say activating.
5. Slide iPhone to unlock.
6. Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings.
7. Your iPhone will turn off and reboot.
8. You should have a message saying “iPhone is activated”.

If still not, turn your iphone off, remove your sim and insert it again…
then open… then repeat 2-8 steps above..

then you should activated it..

If again still not activated…

Its time to jailbreak again the iphone…
– Open Quickpwn 2.2.5
– run it – choose your firmware (2.2/2.2.1)
– jailbreak it…

After Jailbreak – open cydia look for yellowsn0w software (its 0 zero not o letter for snow) then look for carrier bundle software..

install it..
turn your iphone off, remove your sim and insert it again…
then open… then repeat 2-8 steps above..

then it should have the network signal by that time…

Hope guys this will help..

i did this all and my iphone now already have network again and using it without rebel to turbosim..

give me feedback for the results – yhagbalz@yahoo.com

Hi Yhageii,
I too have 3G iPhone firmware 2.2.1, baseband 2.30.01, bootloader 06.02.
I tried to follow the steps mentioned by you but I could not unlock it. I have few questions:
1. In the beggining, you are asking to follow the method mentioned by you. What I understood is that just by following the method you have mentioned and using QuickPwn 2.2.5, the phone will be unlocked – Is that what you are trying to say? I tried but that did not work. May be I did something wrong. Also, I did not get any error codes while restoring the setting.
2. Then I followed the steps that you has mentioned towards the end (with point 1-8) and using Jailbreak together with yellowsn0w – that did not work either.

Is is possible for you or ANYONE to rewrite this in simple steps format, so that newbies like me can follow it correctly? Whoever understood it correctly, please help to rewitre it in simpler step by step approach.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Yhageii,

The status of my iphone is:
Firmware: 2.2.1(5h11), baseband: 02.30.03, bootloader: 06.02, Carrier: (null) (null)

I bought the iPhone in the US with AT&T sim and I used it there for few months. Now, I am not in the US and I do not have AT&T service here.

Please help.

Hi Bls,

your iphone have the exact specs as my i phone have..

just have some clarifications..

1. Is your sim working in your country where you staying right now? (try to use other phone, i mean not iphone just to check) you said there is no AT&T service at the area?

1.1 also try other sim not AT&T maybe to your iphone just to check if its working..

2. Is your iphone now already jailbroken?
3. In the signal bar is it No Service?
4. When you check the carrier is it still null null after you tried the yhagspro?

During doing the yhagspro it is very sensitive to follow the counting..
Try to do it again and make sure you follow the counting..
If you havent follow the counting correctly it will not work…

Keep updating me thru your trial results..

@yhageii

I read your post and it is good.

I have a problem following it cause i could not get itunes to activate my iphone.

the reason being i do not have the origial carrier sim(softbank japan). itunes just would not activate without it.

to my understanding, if i jailbreak the iphone before activating the iphone using itunes, i will definitely get carrier null null.

Is there any way to activate the iphone without using the original carrier sim?

Hi Yhageii,

Please find my point wise answers below:
1. No, my AT&T sim is not working in any phone.
1.1. No, any other sim is not working in my iPhone.
2. I believe my iPhone is jailbroken as I could download yellowsn0w. Please let me know if there is any other method to verify it.
3. Yes, the signal bar is ‘No Service’.
4. Yes, the carrier is still null null.

Actually, when I followed your method, I noticed following differences:
A. I did not get any error message while restoring the firmware to 2.2.1
B. While using Quickpwn, it had 3 steps to hold power and home buttons (for different durations) – I did not understand how to replace those 3 steps with your 2 steps. Please explain.
C. As I could not follow your step properly to hold power and home buttons, probably this is why I did not get a blank and screen and no iTunes logo.

Please suggest how to go about it now.

76 Bls May 27, 2009 at 12:50 pm

Yhageii,

To be precise on using the power and home buttons, following are the three steps that Quickpwn asks to do:
1. Hold Home button for 5 seconds
2. Then hold Home and Power buttons together for 10 seconds.
3. Next, release Power button and continue to hold Home button for 30 seconds.

However, your process says:
1. hold the power button+home for 10 SECS ONLY
2. then release the hone and power button then hold the power button for 2 second

So, should we simple replace Quickpwn’s directions of using 3 steps with your 2 steps?

Anything else to be done?

77 Bls May 27, 2009 at 12:59 pm

Yhgeii,

Sorry, but I have one more questions – wherever you have just mentioned to do a jailbreak, should I follow the Quickpwn’s 3 step procedure (of holding power and hold button) or your 2 step procedure.

Please suggest.

Thanks.

Hi yhageii,

My iphone is 2.2.1 with 5.9 bootloader. I have jail broke it and currently not using my iphone because it is not unlock to carry any other carriers. My question to you on yhagspro is:
I just jailbroke it yesterday so can i start with the below steps rather than from the beggining:
– Open QuickPwn 2.2.5. it will say “must hold power and home for 15 SECS, then press power for 2 seconds” but hold the power button+home for 10 SECS ONLY then release the hone and power button then hold the power button for 2 second..
- Click OK and exit out of QuickPwn!(do not go thru quickpwn – no need!)
- Your iphone will show a black emergency screen with itunes logo on it. (after you press the hold botton (2 Sec)
- open itunes or wait for itself to open automatically.iTunes will take some time to recognize the device and connect to the apple store to unlock your iphone, “it will say your iphone has been unlocked congratulations..
- Your iphone will say “slide to unlock” do it, iTunes then prompts if you want to restore from a backup or it up as a new iPhone. Select new.
- Now you can use quickpwn if you wish to jailbreak it!

@Bls

You should follow this…

1. hold the power button+home for 10 SECS ONLY (AT THE SAME TIME)
2. then release the hone and power button then hold the power button for 2 second

Your iphone will show a black emergency screen with itunes logo on it. (after you press the hold botton (2 Sec)

then after that follow the yhagspro next step..

@darkkennedy

I believe you dont need the original carrier..just used the sim that is working at your country where you staying..

Based on your post your iphone now is already jailbroken right?
the problem is you have carrier null null right? (No service)

when you have this “I have a problem following it cause i could not get itunes to activate my iphone.”

Did you follow this?
Open QuickPwn 2.2.5. it will say “must hold power and home for 15 SECS, then press power for 2 seconds” but hold the power button+home for 10 SECS ONLY then release the hone and power button then hold the power button for 2 second..
- Click OK and exit out of QuickPwn!(do not go thru quickpwn – no need!)
- Your iphone will show a black with emergency screen with itunes logo on it. (after you press the hold botton (2 Sec) These must be the result if you followed it correctly.. did you have this? If you do and itunes did not open, try to open itunes..

If itunes already open your iphone will start and after it starts you should say “waiting for activation” you have to wait for min 10mins.. Within that given time it should be activated.. if not follow this step..
1. Connect iPhone to iTunes.
2. Set up as new iPhone.
3. Wait for iPhone to say activating.
4. Slide iPhone to unlock.
5. Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings.
6. Your iPhone will turn off and reboot.
7. You should have a message saying “iPhone is activated”.

give me feedback when you try this..

@Ptheridophita

Did you have carrier (null) (null) in settings after you jailbroke it?

What do you mean by sim that is working in my country? (i believe you mean sim that works with the iphone right?)–> As i said, my iphone is locked to carrier(softbank) and I do not have a softbank sim. I have a sim that works on my other phone and it is on a different carrier(docomo). It definitely does not work with the iphone i have.

Is it still ok to use this docomo sim in the iphone now or do i need the softbank sim?

Will itunes still activate the i phone with the docomo sim?

I have not tried the method you proposed and i will do it after clarification of the sims as above.

Thanks!

@Yhageii

I tried to do it again but the it failed. This is what I noticed:
1. When I restored my iPhone using iTunes, at the end, it gives a pop-up message saying that please stay connected to iTunes. And then, if i stay connected, the iPhone shows the message that iPhone is getting activated, it will take some time.

Is this the right procedure for restoring the iPhone or it needs to be done differently? Do I need to do it again and again – I mean if I follow the whole procedure and it does not work, then do I need to restore it again?

2. After the step 1 above, when I launch Quickpwn and I hold power & home button together for 10 seconds, releasing the home button and holding the power button for 2 seconds – I do not get iTunes logo, rather I get apple logo. Then, after 10-15 seconds, Quickpwn throws a pop-up message that the phone is not in correct mode, it may damage your phone. Please try again. The pop-up has only ‘ok’ button and when I click ok, it starts giving the directions to hold power and home buttons.

Please suggest what to do.

Thanks.

As i understand, you cannot use your iphone because you dont have softbank sim right?

You will not loose anything if your going to try to unlock your decomo sim in your iphone because its already carrier null null. try yhgaspro using your decomo sim then give me feedback for the result..

@Bls

You said “I tried to do it again but the it failed. This is what I noticed:

After restoring you must quit immediately itunes before it connects to itunes store as i’ve post above then run quickpwn 2.2.5 then follow the yhagspro..

My question is did your iphone already saying “waiting for activation” when you open it? When you reach this stage your near to success..

I did not disconnect it from iTunes and then after few seconds the message ‘waiting for activation’ appeared on iPhone. Once I see this message, shall I wait for sometime (more than 10 minutes) and not do anything else OR I need to follow the remaining process after waiting/not waiting?

Thanks.

at the stage after hold the power button+home for 10 SECS ONLY then release the hmne and power button then hold the power button for 2 second..

then i open itunes and it says something like sim inserted is not supported. and i could not activate the phone. stuck at the Slide for emergency state.

So had no choice but to remove sim and jailbreak it again with quickpwn and ~~~ null null.. lol

p.s. i did loose all my apps and saved games and pictures. haha. LUckily i copied the pics over to my pc beforehand and the apps, i can always download again.

Thanks for the tips and it was a good try.. Any more ideas?

@john penn

You can use your phone to make a call, take pictures and listen to music etc. Maybe even as a paper weight. I am sure you have a manual and its all written there.

Sorry but you can’t use your phone to pick up girls, or to fry eggs and bacon for breakfast.

What you need is google.

Where? in the World Wide Web!

@Yhageii,

I followed the remaining steps, but after the last step, it still show the message “Waiting for activation, this may take some time”.

I repeated the whole process (from the begining), all the steps go thru as mentioned but it always says “waiting for activation”, and it never gives the message saying the phone is activated or unlocked.

I have one question here: I did all this using my AT&T sim (that I brought from US, along with the iphone). And as I mentioned earlier that AT&T does not have service in my country.
If I use my country’s sim, iTunes gives the message that “The sim is not identified” and I am not able to process any of the steps that use iTunes.

Please suggest.

do you got carrier null null in your settings carrier?
Yelllowsn0w does not work with baseband 2.30…

Here’s some way how to check your bootloader
if your iphone is not yet jainlbroken: try this:http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/f136/16285.htm

if your iphone already jailbroken in cydia look for Fuzzyband software.. (you will use this just to check your bootloader)

@Bls

just want to confirm, if you check the setting carrier is it still carrier null null?
it should be the carrier name already on it.. this is just to check if you already finish yhagspro..

if your sim have no service in your area, sorry to say that it will not work..your sim is already not working..
if you have AT&T sim that is working your present country put it on and it will activate already.. (Note AT&T sim you must insert must be working and have network in your present country-just try it for you to find out)
may i know your other sim that works on your present country now?
Ill check if we can see a possibility to use that in your iphone..

It’s firmware is 2.2.1 & Baseband 2.30.03.
I know I can’t unlock it. So i just jailbreak my iphone with quickpwn2.2.5.
But after jailbreaking No service is detected for my AT&T sim itself.
I have done jailbreaking many times with other iphones, but faced no problem before.
When I restore it back to original settings, my sim is got detected (without jailbroken)
Someone please help on this..

@Yhageii,

Yes, the carrier shows up as ‘AT&T’ now and it is nor more (null) (null).
The problem is that AT&T service is not there in my country at all, hence my AT&T sim is not working.

If I am using any other sim that work in my country (Airtel or Vodafone sim), iTunes does not detect the sim. I get the message “The SIM card insterted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported”.

Anything I can do to get it working?

Thanks.

Ok..Im happy now! that means you already successfully finished the yhagspro and it works.. carrier null null in your carrier setting already removed however, since your sim is not working you cannot still use your iphone for now..

If your using vadofone sim as you mentioned or airtel, you try this..

I believe your iphone still not jailbroken at this time?
if not you need to jailbrake it in order for you to download the applicable software that can possibly make your sim work on your iphone..

if you already jailbroke it, in cydia you need to update all source..
once you update all source follow this:

open cydia>sections tab>carrier bundles> then look for vodafone or airtel available..

download it.. then again..
Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings.
Your iPhone will turn off and reboot.
You should have a message saying “iPhone is activated”.

im not sure if this can work but try it..

I installed Vodafone Germany’s carrier bundle but that could not activate my SIM.

Anyone has any idea if only country specific carrier bundle work or not? Also, are any other carrier bundles available other than what is available in ‘All Sources’?

OK.. I believe yhagspro is to remove carrier null null in your carrier settings..
In my experience after I used yhagspro, carrier null null also removed and replace by the carrier im using now.

First thing first, we need to remove carrier null null in your setting in order for you to know if your sim can be used to your iphone.

Follow yhagspro for you to activate your iphone..
after that, thats only the time we can know if possible for you to use your working sim.

keep me posted for the result of yhagspro.. (carrier setting null null must be removed if you followed yhagspro correctly)
