Are you a Mac user? You probably have updated your Mac OS X with fix pack 10.5.6 via automatic software update. The version update of Mac OS fixed several bugs. But at the same time, it introduces a bug that caused the system from detecting iPhone in DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) mode.
As you know, putting iPhone into DFU mode is a crucial step of the jailbreak process. Thus, if you fail to put your iPhone into DFU, you can’t jailbreak with QuickPwn or PwnageTool.
There are already a number of workarounds to fix this issue. And, iPhone Dev Team has recommended another simple solution to workaround with this DFU mode issue. If you have upgraded to Mac OS X 10.5.6, follow these procedures to temporarily allow the system to detect your iPhone in DFU mode:
1. First, you will need an account with ADC (Apple Developer Connection) this is free and takes a few minutes to sign up, you should read the terms and conditions carefully and you should only sign up if you are thinking of developing applications in the future – http://developer.apple.com/mac/
2. Download the disk image “IOUSBFamily-315.4-log.dmg” for Mac OS X 10.5.5 Build 9F33” (yes, that is a “5” in 10.5.5 – this is a developer debug package of the USB kernel extension).
3. Unplug non-vital USB equipment, such as external DVD writers, USB scanners, USB mass storage devices. Only keep your Keyboard and Mouse connected.
4. Install IOUSBFamily-315.4.1.pkg you have just downloaded and then reboot your system
That’s it. You can now launch QuickPwn or PwnageTool and should be able to your iPhone into DFU mode during the jailbreak process.
After jailbreak completed, you can then apply the following procedures to fallback:
1. Download the disk image “IOUSBFamily-327.4.0-log.dmg” for Mac OS X 10.5.6 Build 9G55”
2. Install IOUSBFamily-327.4.0.pkg from within the disk image
3. Reboot your system and re-attach all your USB peripherals.

i tried this work around and still get an error 1600 when i try to load my custom firmware. This does get me a lot further into the process than before though.
