Thanks for posting Simon! Ive got an iPhone 3G 2.2 . Will i loose my cydia apps, when updating? Also, why hasn’t itunes asked me to update from 2.2 yet?

Thanks, Pete.

@Peter, you may have to reinstall Cydia application after upgrading. That’s why I suggest to skip this bug fix update and upgrade to firmware 2.3 later directly. Did you turn off automatic update in iTunes?

Thanks for your quick response. Yes I have disabled the automatic update. Would I be right in saying that you recommend I wait until the dev team release a solution for 2.3? Also, are the dev team updates replacemnts or simply preparation for iphone’s official firmware?

Hello I have a slight problem with unlocking an iphone 2g 16gb on software version 2.2.1. I updated to 2.2.1 with itunes and followed all instructions with quickpwn 2.5. The problem I have is: Iphone shows T-Mobile sim, which is correct, but I cannot make or receive phone calls or send and receive sms. It says call forwarding active…and a voice mail. When I call the voice mail service it doesn’t work. When I add the simcard into another phone, there is no voice mail. When I go into the phone settings it says call forwarding active – forwarding to “error” and I cannot move the slider. I can’t do anything within the phone settings. Everything is greyed out. I added an orange sim into the iphone to see if it recognises it, but it shows “no service”…any other sim card doesn’t work either. I tried unlocking with a simcard in the phone and also no simcard in the phone. Both times it didn’t work. I unlocked many iphones and this is the first one that doesn’t work. This phone has been previously activated with O2 on a contract, but the owner then gave me the phone as a present. I really don’t know what else to do. Please let me know…and many thanks.
I also downgraded it to software version 2.2, and tried to unlock it, but no luck.
Cheers Stef

@Iderobina, can you please try to download QuickPwn 2.2.5-2 again? It seems your file may be corrupted.

Simon,
Thanks for your help and instructions. I jailbroke 2.2 and it worked perfectly. Just to be clear, each time that you update a new firmware and jailbreak do I lose all applications that I have previously downloaded via Cydia and Installer?

Hey guys…. Just needed some advice… Please help me out…

Ok.. First of all I’m from India… A friend of mine helped me get an iphone from the U.S.. That was some where in the month of February 2008. It came preloaded with firmware 1.1.3. (2G iphone). Later this friend of mine Jailbroke and unlocked the phone after upgrading it to 1.1.4, using Ziphone.

Now recently after reading a lot of posts on the net about upgrading, jailbreaking and unlocking I finally decided to try my hand at it… I successfully pawned the phone using Quickpwn and updated the firmware 2.0.2… (Phone in great condition, Jailbroken and unlocked).

Only problem is I noticed that available memory on the phone is down to 7.1 GB… (thats ok)…

Now I want to update the firmware either to 2.2 or 2.2.1.. I’ve downloaded all the relevant files.. (Firmwares of both, Bootloader files, Both versions of Quickpwn)…

But i dont want to lose more disc space… Is there any way I can do this… I was thinking If I do a factory restore, (after backing up) and then upgrade directly to 2.2/2.2.1, would this save space and reclaim the lost space as well?? But will I need to unlock and Jailbreak firmware 1.1.3 before updating to 2.2/2.2.1, or can I update first and then directly jailbreak and unlock 2.2/2.2.1 ??

Also should I update to 2.2.1 or should I update to 2.2.?? Which firmware is better.. Please advice..

Thanks in advance.. Awaiting reply’s….

Problem…i have a 3g 2.2.1 and when i jailbreak using quickpwn 2.2 it works for awhile…then my phone app becomes nonresponsive…this is happening after the 2nd try

@Ryan, you’re right. You’ll need to re-install applications from Cydia or Installer everytime you upgrade & jailbreak the iPhone.

@suneetdmello, both firmware 2.2 and 2.2.1 are ok. Firmware 2.2.1 only offers a minor bug fix. You can follow this jailbreak guide using QuickPwn to upgrade your iPhone to firmware 2.2. And, you’re right. You can do a restore to reclaim the disk space. And, you can follow the guide to do it.

@Nas, are you using QuickPwn 2.2.5-2? QuickPwn 2.2 doesn’t support firmware 2.2.1.

YEa I just did it with 2.2 .5 and it seems to be doom fine but I’m reluctant not to download apps for fear that it’ll lck up my phone app again. Do the installer/cydia apps affect my phone apps?

Thanks Simon… I’ll upgrade to 2.2… but just one more clarification.. If I restore using Itunes (without using the shift key) to an earlier firmware, will I have to jailbreak and unlock before upgrading to 2.2 ? or can I first upgrade to 2.2 and then directly jailbreak and unlock the 2.2 firmware..

I have downloaded and extracted 2.2.5 and the firmware 2.2.1, I did all the steps. When I get to quickpwn all seems to be going well, I follow all those steps then after holding the homebutton it tells me my phone is connected in the wrong mode or problems with my usb, I have tried over 10 times any this is the same problem. Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong.

@chir, to unlock firmware 2.2.1 on iPhone 3g, you have to downgrade the baseband from 2.30.03 to 2.28.00. You can use 3G Fuzzyband downgrader to downgrade the baseband and then follow this guide to jailbreak.

If you are on the iphone 3g 2.2.1, and you can’t get past the apple logo upon completion, restore your iphone by opening itunes, then hold down the Home button for 5 seconds, then hold the power button until it turns off. Let go of just the power button, then press the power button again while still holding the Home button and iTunes will eventually recognize that it’s in “Restore Mode” and you can restore from backup. (If you have one). This will take a while.

The following may apply to you… if you want to give jailbreaking another shot.
Now to attempt QuickPWN again, realize that they left out the first step in the program directions. Open iTunes, click on your phone on the left, hold the shift button down, and click the Restore button. This will open a file browser where you can select the newly downloaded iPhone1,2_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw. Restore to this file. This is an important step because it starts the iphone from scratch. When it prompts to restore service to the phone click yes. Then, open QuickPWN and browse to the same Restore file. When running QuickPWN 2.2.5 or 2.2.1 it will close iTunes. This is okay, don’t worry about it. When it gets to the third step and asks you to hold down for 30 seconds, really hold down for 30 seconds. Don’t let go when it moves down to the next process. Still count down from where it leaves off to zero, then let go. Let it do it’s thing. You should only have to wait about a couple of minutes for it to finish completely. If it sits on the apple or pineapple logo for more than 5 minutes it didn’t work and try again.

@corey,

You mentioned you can find Cydia on home screen, right? If yes, your iPhone has been successfully jailbroken. You can just launch cydia and start downloading Cydia applications.
