iPhone Jailbreak: Possible Solutions for QuickPwn Hang Issue

by Simon Ng on January 14, 2009

As I read through your comments in the QuickPwn Jailbreak guide, there seems quite some users stuck at Jailbreak process while using QuickPwn. Users reported QuickPwn hanged at “Wait for your iPhone to connect in Recovery Mode” (or step 13 in QuickPwn Jailbreak Guide) during jailbreak process. From what I know, this issue is only encountered by Windows owner.

I’ve searched countless forum posts and iPhone-related blog post to figure out how we can get rid of this issue. Base on what I’ve read and other users’ jailbreak experience, the “hang” issue is particularly related to the unavailability of some Windows services. Those Windows services are supposed to be turned on during jailbreak process. But for whatever reason, those required services are switched off (both intentionally or unintentionally). To resolve the “hang” issue, you have to just start those Windows Services before launching QuickPwn. And here I sum up the possible solutions for both WinXP and Vista:

For Vista:

Before launching QuickPwn and perform jailbreak on Vista, please ensure the following Windows Service are started:

  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Terminal Services

To enable these services, you can launch “Control Panel” -> “Administrative Tools” -> “Services”. Then enable the above services if they’re not started.

For Windows XP:

If you’re using QuickPwn on Win XP, please ensure the following Windows Service are started before jailbreak:

  • Messenger
  • Telnet
  • Terminal

To enable these services, you can launch “Control Panel” -> “Administrative Tools” -> “Services”. Then enable the above services if they’re not started.

Jailbreak again…

After you complete the above changes, try to perform jailbreak again using QuickPwn.

Hope this above solutions can solve the hang issue of QuickPwn.

If the above still doesn’t work, try to install .NET framework v3.5 and run QuickPwn again. You can download .NET framework here.

Thanks for this. I had the problem and it took three goes to jailbreak – at one point sat there for 30 mins with the apple logo and nothing else – thought I had a very expensive brick for a while. Interesting though that the PC could see the iphone and open the photos folder during this! Anyway after third attempt and reloading IE on the PC it worked and now have a 3G iPhone working on a non O2 sim in uk – excellent work by the Dev Team.

Thanks for looking into this.

I have installed Net Framework 3.5, rebooted, ensured the services are activated, and still I hang. This is about the 8th time now.

This is not human error – I am timing it right!

Any other ideas?

(Vista Ultimate, iTunes 8.2, Quickpwn 2.2 on iPhone 3G)

I have the same issue. what I did is restore my iphone to original state then did the jailbreak and it worked smoothly.

apparently if your iphone has a lot of software/programs already installed , it will cause the jailbreak to hang with the apple logo at the end.

if your computer cannot detect your iphone. (Open itunes)
hold home button of iphone before inserting the usb cable to your computer. once plugged in release home button, itunes should be able to detect it afterwards.

If the problem is it’s hanging right at the end with the apple logo, i had same problem.
To fix this when QuickPwn has completed, unplug the phone from the USB cable.
Now start i-tunes and re-connect iphone.
This worked for me..it sprang to life in seconds.
Try it and let me know how you went on.

The first time I tried it, the iphone 3g locked up with the apple logo frozen on the screen. I finally was able to reinstall the 2.2 firmware.
Before trying it again I,
1) upgraded the net framework to 3.5
2) Started the three services (which were not running)
3) restored the downloaded firmware (did not allow syncing of music and apps)
(I turned this off before I restored the downloaded 2.2 firmware) Make sure that you have backed up your iphone and all of your apps are in itunes before you restore.
4) I then ran Quickpwn (win) and followed the instuctions. The process took about 10 minutes. The iphone 3g booted with cydia and installer installed.
5) Started itunes and let it sync music and apps. This took over an hour. I have lots of songs and apps.

My jailbroken 16 gb iphone 3g is working perfectly.

I’ve fixed my iPod, by holding down the home button for 5 secs, then connecting to iTunes while still holding down home. it went into recovery mode, itunes restored it and I re-jailbroke it; this time successfully.

Guys I have another problem also with my iPhone (2G). It not only hangs up at Step 11 but also if the phone is left by itself for a few minutes, it goes into the sleep mode and there is no way to get it back up and running, unless I connect to a computer via USB. Any ideas as to what is the problem. Thanx.

After 5 hours of extreme anguish and swearing at Apple, M$ and computers in general, jailbreaking my 3g v. 2.2.1 worked like a charm after I enabled those services in XP (I had .NET framework v3.5 SP1 installed already).Great feeling when after painful hours, a great relief comes after few lines reading and clicks.
Thank you Simon!

Also I jailbreaked the phone using original Apple 2.2.1 firmware not the one the guide points to. Maybe it works with that too but I don’t have the nerves to try that since it finally worked :)

I have a completely different problem…

I’m working on a 3G with 2.2.1 (Baseband 2.30.03), on Vista Home Premium.

I get through the entire jailbreak process fine (using QuickPwn latest version and their .IPSW), and when the phone starts up after the jailbreak, I have no service.

I’m not trying to unlock, just jailbreak, and continue to use AT&T’s service.

What am I doing wrong??

Hey Guys, I faced the same problem with Vista Ultimate but at last here is the solution for this issue for Vista:
1- Update your Vista to Vista Service Pack 2 (Its very very very important to do that).
2- Run the above mentioned services and its related ones (I mean when you go to your service council and search for the RPC service you will find one or two more related services to it, run it as well…)

Enjoy your IPhone again..
Bye..

Itunes is not recognizing my iphone. It tells me to delete itune and the Apple Mobile Device, but when I try to uninstall Apple Mobile, it starts, rolls back and tells me an error occurred. It is not letting me delete so I can reinstall. Anyone have any suggestions?

What is possible to do with the problem regarding not beeing able to restatrt the Iphone without going in to “update mode” (the screen showing USB cable an Itunes logo).
At this this I have to use Blackrain to open the Iphone – and that is not good if on a trip etc, and not having a pc avaiable.

Happy for ant answers to the mail (if possible) : bistroenttt@yahoo.no
